A Sense of Doubt blog post #3696 - Baseball is Back! No Foolin'

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3696 - Baseball is Back! No Foolin'

Welcome back Baseball!!

Officially several days ago, and I did mention it last Thursday, but that was a special day for my Dad, so this, now.

Two recaps and links to box scores from yesterday's games and a reprint of last year's Welcome Back Baseball.

The Cubs BACK UP catcher become the first player in MLB history to hit for a cycle in MARCH.

After being swept by the LA Dodgers, the champs, arguably the best team in Baseball, the Tigers get their first win.

Thank you Baseball.

You comfort me.

Kelly hits for cycle and Cubs power past Athletics 18-3 in 1st MLB game at Sutter Health Park

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- — Carson Kelly hit for the cycle and drove in five runs, Michael Busch launched a two-run homer on the way to a career-high four RBI, and the Chicago Cubs pounded the Athletics 18-3 on Monday night to spoil their first game in their new Northern California home.

Busch connected in the first inning and Dansby Swanson followed with a homer on a blustery night when the wind carried balls over the fence just as Cubs manager Craig Counsell predicted. Indeed, there were plenty of offensive fireworks in the first major league game at Sutter Health Park in California’s capital region.

With 21 hits, the Cubs amply backed right-hander Ben Brown (1-1), who struck out five in five innings for his second career win. They scored their most runs since an 18-8 victory at Pittsburgh last Aug. 26.

The 18 runs allowed by the A’s were the most by any team in a home opener in 100 years, according to Sportradar. The Browns allowed 21 to the Indians in 1925.

A's shortstop Jacob Wilson hit his first career homer leading off the third in front of a sellout crowd of 12,119.

The Cubs jumped on A’s righty Joey Estes (0-1), and Swanson homered for the second straight game.

Key moment

All the A’s players wore No. 24 to honor late Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, who died Dec. 20 five days before his 66th birthday. A 24-second moment of silence was held after player introductions, then Henderson's three daughters threw out ceremonial first pitches.

Key stat

Kelly homered in the fourth inning, had a two-run single in the fifth, doubled and walked in the sixth, and tripled in the eighth. The previous Cubs player to hit for the cycle was Mark Grace on May 9, 1993, against the San Diego Padres — before Kelly was even born in 1994.

No catcher for the Cubs had accomplished the feat since Randy Hundley on Aug. 11, 1966, versus Houston.

Kelly even walked twice, too. His run-scoring triple made it 17-3.

Up next

Cubs LHP Justin Steele (1-1, 8.00 ERA) takes the mound Tuesday in his third start of 2025. RHP Luis Severino (0-0, 0.00) makes his second start for the A's after pitching the opener Thursday at Seattle.

Greene homers as the Tigers use fast start to beat Mariners 9-6 for 1st win of the season

SEATTLE -- — Riley Greene homered and Javier Báez hit a two-run double in Detroit's six-run first inning, helping the Tigers beat the Seattle Mariners 9-6 on Monday night for their first victory of the season.

Báez, Dillon Dingler and Trey Sweeney each had three of Detroit's 18 hits. Kerry Carpenter had two hits and two RBI.

The Tigers were swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in their season-opening series.

Randy ArozarenaCal Raleigh and Luke Raley homered for Seattle. Julio Rodríguez had two hits and scored two runs.

Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock (0-1) recorded just two outs before he was pulled.

Carpenter singled in Justin-Henry Malloy, and Greene hit a solo drive for his first homer of the season. Dingler and Sweeney each hit an RBI single before Baez chased Hancock with his first double of the year.

Tigers rookie Jackson Jobe permitted three runs and three hits in four innings in his first career start. He struck out three and walked four.

Tyler Holton (1-0) got the win, and Brant Hurter pitched three innings for the save.

Key moment

Baez’s first-inning double broke the game wide open. Hancock was one strike away from getting out of the inning, but Baez’s hit went off the wall in left.

Key stat

Eight players had at least one hit for Detroit.

Up next

Tigers right-hander Casey Mize will start Tuesday against Seattle ace Logan Gilbert (0-0, 1.29 ERA).

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3327 - Welcome Back: Baseball Returns 2024

I love Baseball.

I consider it like a religion, and so that's why I capitalize the word as it by rule of grammar would not capitalized because it's a common noun.

I often reprint lots of baseball content as I did in last year's opening day post linked below (from March 30, 2023).

Baseball starts two days earlier this year, and I am doing something differently this year.

I listed all of the Baseball links from the last year, starting with, as I mentioned, last year's March 30th first day of Baseball post.

Now, following the list of posts from this blog, I took many links I have been saving and presented a series of Baseball news and features going back to last season. Instead of reprinting all those articles, O added images and used QUOTEBACKS to snatch key content and provide links.

All the links come from a draft blog post I use to store links that I want to share on the blog based on what I see and read on the Internet. I have been using this post to store links for at least a year and maybe longer. There was some stuff, also, that I had stored in my email: tons of links that I wanted to share on the blog. I figured this was a good thing to do to assemble these all in one place.

Well, there's A LOT of links in that draft post. More than I could ever share, at least not while I keep finding more. And so, for this post, I decided to round-up these links and the content therein. Seems like a way to trim down the BIG sports category in that draft post of assembled links. I may need to do more of this "round-up" sharing method.

So that's what's in this post.

Welcome back Baseball.

I missed you, and I love having you in my life.

Thanks for tuning in.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
