A Sense of Doubt blog post #3632 - BOWIE MONTH: 28 Bowie Songs for the 28th on the 27th - Music Monday for 2501.27(and 28th)
Hi, Thanks for tuning into this station.
It is DAVID BOWIE MONTH. He died nine years ago on January 10th, his 78th birthday was two days before (78 this year had he lived; 69 when he died).
This may seem a bit tricksy (like tricksy Hobbitses), but when I decided to do another mix for today and saw that I was one day from the 28th, I did 28 songs for the 28th, even I am posting on the 27th.
Why?
If you read regularly, then you may know that my Dad died on 8/28/24. All those EIGHTS in that number.
So, here's 28 for the 28th a day early.
So, here's 28 for the 28th a day early.
When I conceived this mix focusing on "Panic in Detroit," it was just general panic due to our country and the daily insanity generated by the new president and his cronies.
And then the next day (heh - David Bowie's penultimate album), real panic set in as I will share in tomorrow's post.
I had already planned to book end this mix with two versions of "Panic in Detroit" and writing to you all from Wednesday the 29th, this choice seems all the more relevant because even though my panic over the federal loan and grant freeze has quelled somewhat, it's still not fully silenced and surely won't be for at least the next two years if not all four.
From the focus on "Panic in Detroit" to start, I built a list of 28 diverse songs. I could have had one song from each studio album and two wild cards = 26 albums (counting the posthumous Toy), and yet I did not quite do that. Some albums are skipped (Buddha in Suburbia, Let's Dance) and some have many tracks (Aladdin Sane = four). I tried for several lives versions as well as just lyrics videos as well as many not on studio albums, such as the two from Labyrinth, "Dancing in the Streets," and "Under the God" as Tin Machine is not counted in David Bowie's discography.

I usually shy away from including "Heroes" in mixes not because it isn't a great song (it is!), but it's so well known. I am often going for less well known Bowie music. As great as it is, I have outgrown the allure I felt for it decades ago. It's not even in my top 20 Best Bowie songs, which is a very biased and specific list, which is not a list I have created... I feel a blog entry being conceived. Maybe this coming Monday, which will be FEBRUARY and no longer BOWIE MONTH, but I never managed as many Bowie-centric posts this month as I hoped. So more Bowie yumminess in February until I go into a less frequent, occasional mode.
Some of those favorites (what I see as the "best) are in this mix. My favorite is "Ashes to Ashes" and that's in a pair (so really 29 songs but sue me, it's one video) with Bowie's cover of "Wild is the Wind," which was a favorite long before I realized it was a cover. And a post on Bowie covers is another plan for the future. Other faves that will be on the top twenty list on this mix are "Golden Years" and maybe "Scary Monsters," though that's why I need to make the list.
My Dad was not a David Bowie fan, but I do dedicate this mix to him as he died five months ago = 152 days ago.
I couldn't have been a David Bowie and so many other things without the life my parents provided for me. Thanks, Mom and Dad.
Thank you for tuning in.
"If you can see me,
I can see you..."

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
