A Sense of Doubt blog post #3582 - Weekly Comics for October 2024 and Recaps, Reviews - CBS 2412.08
If you have checked out my blog before, you surely know of my love of comic books and my attempt to always make Sunday into Comic Book Sunday with only the occasional variation.
You may also know that I still get the majority of my comic books shipped from Michigan every month. When they arrive, I note the date and arrange them in the reading order. Sometimes the order shifts as I work my way through the stack over the next month, hoping to get through them all before the next shipment. I do not manage to get through them all very often and so there's back log.
I track all of this reading and the weekly arrivals here in the blog. I do not publish these entries all that often.
The last one was published nine months ago but it actually ABOUT comics from December of 2023, which is a year ago, this being the first day of December.
Sunday, February 11, 2024
If I am going to truly do what I wish with the entry, it's a lot of work. Today, I hope to keep it somewhat short because I am supposedly in LOW POWER MODE.
This post is about October 2024 comics published a little sooner than the previous.
I was thrown for a few seconds as I reviewed the list at the link above because if
Ultimate Spider-Man is at ten issues in October, then it must have started in January of 2024, so where it is it in February? That's how I read my own work closely and saw that the post covers December 2023 comics.
Still,
Ultimate Spider-Man has been at the top or near it ever since it came out.
Fantastic Four is always high in the list.
Nightwing is also ranked highly each month IF I list it in the reading order. I have just started being more diligent about adding comics that I buy out here to the main reading list.
Nightwing always gets read right after I buy it as he's my favorite super-hero, but I do not always buy it when around the time that I am making the list.
But comparing, Titans has dropped from FOURTH in December of 2023 to 24th here in the list for October of 2024.
I will confess that all the X-Men books were swapped from everything from Captain America to The Justice Society.
And as of this writing, I am only up to the Werewolf by Night books.
In other matters of order, first issues usually make it near the top or the very top even when they are the bullshit re-launch that companies, mostly Marvel, do to increase sales as number ones tend to sell really well. So, Iron Man #671, which is also #001 of 2024.
Jonny Quest is a favorite show of mine and I LOVED the 1980s book from Comico, and yet the first issue dropped low in my stack because of specials and ongoing series that I was eager to read. As you see that has changed, and this third issue is in the third slot up from 17th where the first issue ranked in August to fifth last month (September).
Specials often rank highly both one shots and limited series/crossovers. However, Absolute Power dropped to eighth and only debuted at sixth when it came out back in July. And even the DC ALL IN Special #001 did not rank very highly, though in other months it could have topped the stack.
Similarities with the post I made last year will show that Fantastic Four and Daredevil are always near the top or on top of the reading stack.
Other comics like Captain America and Birds of Prey have dropped from the top ten.
More content after the list.

MY QUICK TAKES ON THE COMICS
spoiler alerts
The new
Iron Man deserved to stop the stack. The new creative team of Ackerman/Ohta/Sinclair are returning Stark to his roots as a company owner and an engineer who makes things. And though they haven't concocted the fatal weakness from the origin, the shrapnel too near the heart, they had a new adversary hack the armor, knocking Stark out of the Iron Man game for "many weeks" (time has little meaning in comics) followed by painful rehab. When back on his feet, he faces corporate takeover and the new adversary, Justine Hammer, in a huge new suit of armor and calling herself Iron Monger as she hacks Stark's armor and leaves him for dead. So back to work. Fire up the welding torch. Time to go to WAR. I'm in!! This will stay near the top or on top next month. I like the art though I like the cover by Yasmine Putri more.
As I shared Ultimate Spider-Man is always at the top of my list. Seeing Peter discover his powers and his new suit initially grabbed my interest the most, especially as he came out first to his daughter and kept his alter ego a secret from his son and wife, though that has all come out now, as it should. Now with the tenth issue his friendship with Harry Osborn is showing cracks. His uncle and Jonah are stirring things up with their investigative reporting, especially going after Gwen Stacy, Oscorp CEO, who also invested in their company, The Paper, which leads to a tense meeting with Harry Osborn and an uneasy alliance to take down "The Kingpin." Hickman continues to play with the history and our expectations in this fresh look, and it's brilliant. The art is also off the hook, even with guest artist David Messina.
I already about
Jonny Quest, here:

And the Dynamite reboot of Hanna-Barbera properties continues to be very strong. More thoughts on
Space Ghost below.
I adore Fantastic Four. It was my first Marvel comic. There was a TV show on featuring the team when I started reading comics. I may not have understood then how the family theme spoke to my heart, but I get that now. Ryan North with artists Fiorelli and Reber have made this a must read very high or on top of my stack each week. Alex Ross covers (usually, not this month) get me excited for what's inside. And the stories have been a smart blend of science problems and family dynamics. This issue was cute, though not one of my favorites, but watching Reed and Johnny solve a problem together was a good change of pace.
Daredevil continues to be one of my favorite books even after the change of the creative team. Look at this cover. That's going to make people grab it off the shelves. Part of my fan boy nature does not like a change in the premise and formula. Casting Matt as a priest back from the dead is not what I signed up for with
Daredevil, but I also know that like the Fantastic Four living at Aunt Petunia's farm in Arizona or Spider-Man split from Mary Jane, none of these choices are forever. Change of pace is healthy. After 676 issues of
Daredevil in 60 years, creative teams should not be chained to the same old, same old. So, Matt as a priest, estrangement from Elektra, even the former assassin as an alternative Daredevil, none of it is forever. Saladin Ahmed is creating rich story with stunning art by Luigi Zagaria and Jesus Aburtov. It's beautiful. And having some monster on a murder rampage in Hell's Kitchen and somehow related to the lost boy from the orphanage who discovered that Matt us Daredevil is even more intriguing.
Lastly, I loved the Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo run on
Nightwing so much, I was fully braced for a huge let down.
I catalogued my love for the latest
Nightwing comics here:
Sunday, May 30, 2021
So, I was primed to not like it. But I do like it. A LOT. Dan Watters, Dexter Soy, and Veronica Gandini are building on what Taylor/Redondo built and honoring it. And yet, they are expanding the mythos in new and intriguing ways, sharing all about the various crime gangs in Bludhaven and a new major adversary in Spheric Solutions. And Dick has still has his dog, which is very important. KEEP BITEWING!!
Ultimate Black Panther has been interesting and has been up and down in my stack. I stopped getting the regular
Black Panther book in a Spring cost cutting move right before it was cancelled. Though
Ultimate Spider-Man is the best of the new Ultimate books, the Blank Panther comic reinforces the efforts of both of the big two to keep older readers engaged with alternate takes on classic characters, drawing from their history, but telling new stories within that framework. This one does interesting things, such as giving T'Challa a queen to whom he is married, making Storm a friend and involved with Eric Killmonger (another friend), and battling Ra and Khonshu for control of Africa. Currently, they are searching for the Sorcerer Supreme.
As I have mentioned special events often top the stack, but
Absolute Power dropped to eighth given the rise in the stack of
Jonny Quest and
Ultimate Black Panther from previous months. I adore Dan Mora's art, and I do like Mark Waid's writing a lot; however, mostly, I was underwhelmed by the series. The Green Arrow betrayal and reversal was contrived and quite obvious. Waller, who used to be quite interesting, was re-imagined as single-minded, raving psychopath. The heroes really had little trouble freeing themselves from the perils, and, okay, some changes to powers of several heroes, but really YAWN. Though I am excited for the return the JLA and the JLA satellite.
After a cost cutting move, I am back on board with both Detective Comics and Batman, especially the former for the pairing of Tom Taylor and Mikel Janin. Wow.
The Batman comic is okay, too, though it's probably dropping in the reading order as I was not over-impressed.
I did really like
DC ALL IN Special #001.
Great art.
Again, did I mention being excited about the new JLA and the return of the satellite?
The new idea for the team and how it will work is very smart. Showcase the amazing cast of heroes in the franchise and thus expand the ability to tell all kinds of stories.
Potential conflict with the Titans?
Scary changes with Darkseid and the Spectre.
Featuring Booster Gold as more than an ineffectual hero existing just to provide comic relief.
Also, previews of all the new ABSOLUTE books, which I was not going to buy, but... come on.
Zeb Wells ends his run with Amazing Spider-Man #059 [Legacy #953] and Amazing Spider-Man #060 [Legacy #954]. John Romita, Jr. also?
Best part? A clear and yet unspoken indication that Aunt May knows that Peter is Spider-Man.
I mentioned above that I am loving Dynamite's focus on the Hanna-Barbera characters, and the company launched its Space Ghost comic before the Jonny Quest one. I like the latter a little more, but I do adore Space Ghost and have since I was a little kid. Telling more adult-themed stories with the character yet keeping the comic accessible to all ages is a great move. The Quest comic seems almost entirely aimed at original fans, but this Space Ghost comic may have greater appeal to old and new fans.
Again, in the category of comics I was not going to buy or not buy anymore are Wolverine and Moonknight, but then I caved-in and bought Hickman and Capullo's
Wolverine Revenge locally and then subscribed, breaking my NO MINI-SERIES; BUY THE TRADES rule. Worth it.
But come on!
THIS COVER.
I would have grabbed the issue and started midway if I had not started with number one.
I caught up on what I missed in the Moonknight world via Marvel Unlimited online, and so I re-subscribed to Moonknight: Fist of Khonshu. Not bad. I can't read all my comics digitally as I need to get my eyes off screens. This is one I could read online but will afford if I am able just to get my eyes off screens.
I was very excited for Straczynski's return to Marvel with the new Captain America book, and it was high in my stack when it first came out and has since dropped. It's good, but I am not blown away. This current issue gets into relationships between the heroes which I like a lot more than the previous arc with the living embodiments of Life and Death.
I have always loved Avengers, and I do like Jed MacKay's writing, but I have ben underwhelmed with the comic lately, and so it has dropped in the order. I do like the face off with Doctor Doom the new and we hope temporary Sorcerer Supreme. However, the strength of team books and especially the halcyon era of Avengers is the inter-relationships and secondary storylines. MacKay has a little flavoring of these but not enough to have me rate the issue higher in my stack each month. Though this Doom story might get it a bump.
Likewise, Titans has plummeted. I love the characters, but the story has fizzled and the new creative team is not as strong as the previous.
LOVE LOVE LOVE The Magic Order, and this twist-a-roo storyline is great. This one could be much higher in the stack and gets placed lower not out of lack of interest but because I know I need time to savor it, and it will not be a fast read. Often some of those books near the top I expect to read quickly.
Superman #19 [Legacy #862]: Lois Lane with super powers? Is this selling books? I like the idea as a story arc though not as a permanent change, which it appears that it is not.
The Justice Society of America is the very definition of starting with a bang and ending with a whimper. I hope the new creative team does better.
I used to be an avid reader of the Werewolf By Night books in the 1970s. Grabbed these on impulse locally and like them a lot. Oddly, no digital codes...
And that's about where I am in the stack.
Birds of Prey will get a boost next month after issue #014, which features of the return of artist Basri and is doing some smart things.
Reading this group of Action Comics right now, and I like the Phantom Zone story.
Others are in back log.
That's all.
Thanks for reading.
Thanks for tuning in.
Back to low power mode and reprints most of next week.
