The Not Quite Daily Bowie - #73 - "Don't Let Me Down & Down"

The Not Quite Daily Bowie - #73 - "Don't Let Me Down & Down"

The not quite so daily Bowie feature just took off 12 days. I was going to rename it the weekly Bowie, but that's not even accurate now.

This is a cover. I did not know it was a cover when I chose it. It's a great song.

This song hits a chord today.

Chris O'Reilly of Pushing Ahead of the Dame thinks this is one of Bowie's more disappointing covers,

Maybe I have lost my critical faculties, but I like it.

"Still, Bowie’s “Don’t Let Me Down and Down” would have been comfortably banal but for his vocal. For whatever reason, Bowie decided to sing the first verses in a cod-patois, some baffling attempt at a vague Jamaican or French-inspired accent (“steel I keep my lurve for youuu,” he begins) that hovers between his lower register and a croaking somnolent timbre. As though shamed by Lester Bowie’s fluttering beauty of a trumpet solo, by far the finest thing on the track, Bowie corrected course in the latter half of the song, lunging into his high register, riffing against the ghastly backing singers and impressively flailing away in an attempt to make the song seem like a Young Americans outtake. It was too late: the mix of a crass arrangement and a bewildering, schizophrenic vocal made “Don’t Let Me Down & Down” one of Bowie’s most disappointing covers."

"Don't Let Me Down & Down" - BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE - 1993

Don't Let Me Down And Down is a song written by Tarha and Martine Valment and performed here by David Bowie. It is from the album Black Tie White Noise in 1993.

This video is very interesting with a mix of visual effects and a ballet performance.

"Don't Let Me Down & Down"

Still I keep my love for you
No place to hide no way to fall
Nowhere to lie no world so wide
I'm sick and tired of telling you
Don't let me down and down and down
Don't let me down and down and down

I know there's something in the wind
That crazy balance of my mind
What kind of fool are you and I?
Scared to death and tell me why
I'm sick and tired of telling you
Don't let me down and down and down
Don't let me down and down and down

Still I keep my love for you

You made a date with destiny
You jog-jog in my memory
You haunt in mind not fade away
I'm sick and tired of telling you
Don't let me down and down and down
Don't let me down and down and down
I'm sick and tired of telling you

Still I keep my love for you
No place to hide, no way to fall
Nowhere to lie no world so wide
I'm sick and tired of telling you
Don't let me down and down and down
Don't let me down and down and down

NOTE ON WHY THE DAILY BOWIE IS NO LONGER DAILY: For 53 days, I completed daily Bowie posts. My schedule is too demanding to make a post every day, so this will now be a feature that is called The Daily Bowie, but it will not be daily. I will post as I can. I will post often. But if I miss a day, I will skip it. Otherwise, I get in the position of making five Bowie posts all in one day, and that's a lot of Bowie for people to swallow all at once... (yeah, leaving that badly phrased, innuendo packed statement. I bet Bowie would have laughed at it).
