Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #786 - Dogs Enjoy New Backyard

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #786 - Dogs Enjoy New Backyard

Hey Mom,

I feel behind again for the blog because of work, unpacking, walking dogs, work, unpacking, and did I mention I have to work?

Slowly things are coming together. I filled prescriptions at the Pharmacy. As you see, with the help of the young men living here, we have fenced down much of the backyard because there are huge gaps between the bottom of the fence and the ground. I would also like to pile stones along the edges.

Still, the dogs are trying to find their places and enjoyment of the new back yard.

It's about time for another walk as I type this days later.

That's all for now. Catch up mode.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #785 - Ellory and the Fence Incident

Ellory after the fence incident - 1708.30 - 7:26 a.m.
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #785 - Ellory and the Fence Incident

Hi Mom,

So our yard is not totally escape proof yet.

Yesterday, Adam and Keith finished work started by me and the Big Guy in putting up chicken wire below the fence so the dogs could not squeeze under. They had already squeezed under twice.

So, chicken wire, see?

But, we did not have enough chicken wire to go all around the yard. We did the back fence, which is the area the dogs were most interested in because it separates us from a weedy ravine with a creek running through it.

But we stopped at the sides, which separate us from the neighbor's yard.

I was doing stuff in the dining area and watching Ellory only intermittently rather than constantly. I checked on her and found her missing. Frantically, I began to search.

I suspect she got under the fence above into the neighbor's yard and then out back. I found her peek back at me many houses away to the left. I called her and she came back but there's this big fence between us.

I didn't want to take my eyes off her, so I climbed over the fence, and then picked her up. I was considering hoisting her over the fence and dropping her back in the yard. She weighs 50 some pounds, so that's a challenge in and of itself, but I was also unsure I could drop her on her feet and the the fence is probably seven feet or more in height, so that's quite a drop.

I tried to carry her along the fence line to the left of the house, but soon ran into trouble with prickers and precarious footing in the limited ban width at the top of the ravine. I was forced to set her down and keep asking her to follow me as we made our way several houses down to the end of the street and the newest construction where fence had not been installed yet.

At this point I grabbed her by the collar, dragged her home, and suspended her backyard privileges for a few hours. Just a little while ago, I went out to sit on the back porch with both dogs outside and kept an eye on Ellory. Our WiFi works great outside, which is a blessing.

I really like our new house but I knew I was spoiled with our set up back at St. Antoine of a lush, green lawn in a huge fenced in back yard that was escape proof with a slider in the bedroom for quick in and out for potty especially at bedtime.

This is less ideal and soon when we have the backyard weeds killed and the area hydro-seeded, the girls will need to be taken out on leashes throughout the day for up to a month or more until the back yard is ready for them.

But it's okay. I do love the new house. It has many other great features that counter-balance these minor inconveniences.

And Ellory is very sorry... :-)

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #784 - Shelves in the new home - Dad's Last Day

The Big Guy helps put up shelves - 1708.29
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #784 - Shelves in the new home - Dad's Last Day

Hi Mom, So, the shelves happened.

I had not searched everywhere for the brackets and standards. I found the old standards (see those in a wrapped bundle below Dad in the picture to the left) after we had bought new ones. Though the new ones are better as we had cut many old ones to fit the St. Antoine house and would have to piece them together here. I have not yet found the brackets, so we made do with what the Woodland Ace Hardware had in stock and are two brackets short of what we needed to put up the eight 10'5" shelves.

The eight 7'5" shelves will go in what will be Liesel's office and some extra storage space.

I am so happy that the Big Guy was able to help me put up the shelves,

Adam and Keith will help me put up the rest. While Dad and I were occupied with shelves, Adam and Keith finished the chicken wire in the back yard to keep the dogs from escaping and helped with assorted other odds and ends while Piper unpacked more kitchen stuff.

Slowly, progress is made in the new home in Woodland!

One set of shelves complete!

My office - more progress - 1708.30 - with Satchel

Hi Mom, Unpacking is happening.

After arriving yesterday, I had to do some work in the morning and teach the class I missed on Saturday.

After completing the minimum work, we began the task of unpacking.

The moving truck had arrived Wednesday 1708.23 and much of the load was crammed into my office, the den, first room off the entrance to the house -- see the first photo above the title to this entry at the top of the post. At least half the stuff crammed in my office was not "office" stuff, so it all had to be moved for unpacking and storing. Kitchen stuff went to kitchen. Holidays decorations went to the great room (temporarily). Wardrobe boxes were moved upstairs. My dresser was moved upstairs. All the books of my library were moved the garage awaiting the shelves being put up in the bonus loft room on the second floor, which is tomorrow's task (see tomorrow's post).

Piper, Adam (Piper's boyfriend), and their friend Keith were immensely helpful in re-organzing, moving, and unpacking.

Much work was accomplished. It was a long day, which ended with a meal at one of the local Mexican restaurants and a visit with Rob (Liesel's step Dad) and his wife Elizabeth.

More to come...

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #782 - Arrival - My New Home- Trip West Day Seven

Hi Mom,

We have arrived.

The trip west is over.

Dad and I are here in my new home in Woodland, WA, which is north of Vancouver, WA and Portland, OR.

I am setting the time on this post before we actually arrived (which was about 16:00-ish on Sunday 1708.27), and I am back dating this post as it's now Wednesday 1708.30 as I type.

The trip consisted of a 2310 mile trek by car hauling a trailer across the northern route, not counting the detours or "side tracks" we took.

But we made it!

I have been unpacking for two days as I type this three days after the date and time stamp.

The next few posts will be boring to most people as I chart some unpacking and putting up shelves.

Keeping this short for now as I catch up.

But here's four more photos.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #781 - THE BEST DOGS EVER - Trip West Day Six

Ellory in the car 1708.22
Hi Mom,

This penultimate post on the day before we arrive in our new home is dedicated to my dogs, our dogs (Liesel's and mine), Satchel Paige Tower and Ellory Queen Tower, the two best dogs on the planet earth.

I cannot imagine how this trip would have transpired if these two girls had not been on their best behavior and have been such wonderful traveling companions

As an example, since Ellory is not fully house broken, I have put down a puppy pad in every hotel room on this journey. In the last of the hotel rooms (Pasco, WA where we arrived on Saturday August 26), and the nicest of the hotel rooms, she used it for the first time!

Speaking of which, Ellory just went to the door indicating she needed to go out and go potty, which they both did within minutes of being taken out.

They have been wonderful companions. They jump right in the car, often off-leash, when it's time to go. They wait to get their leashes on when we get somewhere. Generally, except for a couple of times when Ellory scouts, they stay in their back seat nest of comforters and pillows and toys. For the most part, they go potty when it's time and make the most of their jaunts, rest stops, and short walks. They play a little with each other and sleep well through the night. Neither of them has destroyed any hotel furniture or bedding. In short, they have been angels.

Satchel in car 1708.23
Though Satchel is nervous, worried, and does not understand what we're doing, she's all right and often happy and content with plenty of sleep, belly scratches, and love from her two human travelling companions.

In other news, as this has to be a short blog entry so I can do some work before heading for home, we had a good day of driving today but we have some "sidetracks" as Dad likes to call them.

First off, we missed the southern turn of where route 28 meets route 200 at Plains, MT where we were to turn toward Paradise, MT and ultimately St. Regis to pick up I-90. Instead we headed north and did not discover our mistake until we were in Thompson Falls and saw a sign for Noxon. With limited maps and unreliable phone service to see Google Maps, we just took a southern road assuming that eventually it would link up with I-90. It was Montana Secondary Highway 471, which heads through Thompson Pass, a mountain road. It was 21 miles of gorgeous landscape but also steep declines, sharp curves, and ultimately narrow roads. Eventually, the road runs along Prichard Creek and turns in Thompson Pass Road meeting up with the Coeur d'Alene River and its road in Prichard before heading through part of the Coeur d'Alene National Forest and reaching I-90 just pass Enaville, ID.

Lastly, we reached our destination in Ritzville, WA where we were to stay at the Top Hat Motel relatively early. Though the place has character and some neat features, the room was subpar, dark, and smelled funny, but the deciding factor was unusuable WiFi. After days of terrible Internet in hotels, I needed something high speed and reliable for a final push of work before reaching my new home.

We packed up and headed to Pasco, WA and a gorgeous Best Western with great Internet and a huge, modern, luxurious room. I will post pictures later.

What was going to be a day of driving from Kalispel  to Ritzville, WA (4hrs 45 min - 296 miles) turned into Kalispel - Thompson Falls (107 miles), Thompson Falls - Enaville (61.2 miles), and then Enaville to Ritzville (123 miles), and then Ritzvile to Pasco/Richland, WA (seems fitting that it's Richland, like where I grew up) (78.6 miles) for a grand total of 369.8 miles, an extra 73.8 miles, except that most of those miles were through mountains!

For now, I have to do some work and then pack up and head for our new home in Woodland, WA.

Thanks for reading!

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #780 - Kalispel, MT - Trip West Day Five

south of Glacier National Park, Montana
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #780 - Kalispel, MT - Trip West Day Five

Hi Mom,

We made it to Kalipsel. For a little while, it looked like we might not.

So far, in terms of unplanned and potentially disastrous events, we had to drive around Appleton, WI because of road construction and a wrong turn. We ran out of gas in rural North Dakota and narrowly averted a multiple hour ordeal because of the kindness of a stranger, and then in the mountains south of Glacier National Forest we stopped the car at a scenic turnout, and the care decided not to start back up right away. We had no phone service at all in that place. None. We could not make any phone calls. And then we almost locked the keys in the car, if not for my forethought in giving Dad a spare set.

It's like the car thought it was overheated even though the temperature gauge was normally. Maybe it was the elevation. We don't know. But just before I was going to try to flag down another good samaritan -- where was Dalton of West Salem, ND when we needed him again? -- the car started. It's running fine now. A real mystery.

I have been grading in the car at a furious pace. I finished the composition essays and started on the business documents when we had this curve ball and then I decided to just enjoy the scenery the rest of the way. We were only 40 or so miles from Kalispel when we had this incident.

Cut Bank, MT park and rest stop

We have been really lucky with parks and rest stops, especially when I cannot look them up on my phone. For instance, today, we stopped in Shelby, MT for a potty break and beverages, including a jug of water for the girls (the dogs), but there was no good place to let them out and give them a little run and a potty break. So I said, let's try the next town up route 2, which was another 10 miles or so. And then, here was this gorgeous park! This happened back in Minnesota. We pulled off the highway at Barnesville with no idea what was there but hoping there would be something good for the girls, and there was this gorgeous park with a huge pond. My Internet upload speed is slow here so I won't post more pictures. But our karma for good places to stop with the dogs has been very good.

Also, the dogs have been angels for the whole trip. Though Ellory just threw up in the hotel in Kalispel, so far, there have been no accidents at all in the room or the car. Not sure why Ellory threw up, but I will keep an eye on her as I have been all trip with both of them. The whole reason for this trip was to drive them across the country and avoid putting them on a plane. So far, it's been really great.

We have one more hotel tomorrow night before we reach my new home in Woodland, Washington and reunite our family.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #779 - Havre, Montana - Trip West Day Four

Hi Mom,

Still traveling. Today was the longest day of the trip.

Up early in Bismarck and on the road by 8:30, which with me needing to work was a bit tricky. Then we headed up to Underwood and got there by 9:30. We were back on the road before 11 a.m. after Dad spent some time in Underwood where his grandfather is buried and where his father was born.

I budgeted this day to be our longest mileage day. To go from Bismarck, ND to Havre, MT through Underwood is 539 miles, which Google estimates will take 8 hrs 48 min. We reached Havre at 6:30 Mountain time, which was for us, from when we started, about 7:30.

Because of stops with the dogs, and even with Dad driving 80 MPH most of the way, it took us 11 hours to make that haul.

Here's where we stayed.

Townhouse Inn Havre - "Haver"
Address: 601 1st St W, Havre, MT 59501

We tried leaving Ellory out of her crate because the night before in Bismarck, we were called and asked to return to the hotel when we were trying to have dinner. When we got back, Ellory was wailing and yipping. So we tried no crate and both dogs were very well behaved and very good when we returned from dinner, which was just across the street at a place the desk clerk did not recommend, but I didn't want to take the time to go to the other place by shuttle as I was worried about Ellory uncrated in the hotel room.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #778 - Traveling - Trip West Day Three

Near Barnesville, MN
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #778 - Traveling - Trip West Day Three

Hi Mom,

Still traveling to the west coast and my new home in Woodland, Washington. I am transporting the dogs with my Dad's help across the country.

I am restricting myself to one photo and limited content because I am publishing this two days later, and I need to be mindful of time. Plus, I am trying to work when I can and when I have good Internet. Today's hotel, two days from this posted date, has good Internet.

So far the trip has gone well and what has not gone well has been easily handled. We are lucky. We are blessed.

On the way to Bismarck, North Dakota, where we were scheduled to stay tonight, Wednesday, August 23rd, we ran out of gas on a long stretch of highway.

We were one mile from an exit that had no services, though I did not know that from the sign near where our car failed from lack of fuel.

Dad had been keeping his eyes on the road as he was driving 80 MPH, and I was working and had stopped checking the gas gauge frequently.

Services were five miles behind us, and I am glad I did not have to walk five miles.

A nice young man, 23 years old, single father, farmer, construction tradesman named Dalton stopped and gave me a lift to get gas, and then brought me back to fill up. Then, when I forgot to screw the gas cap back in place, he chased us down, as we returned to that same gas station to fill up and returned it just as I discovered it was missing.

Dad gave Dalton his secret emergency fund.

What could have been a many hour long delay and an enormous frustration became a one hour delay and a pleasure to be helped my such a good samaritan.

There are good people in this world.
