A Sense of Doubt blog post #3899 - Ellory Queen's Ninth Birthday

Ellory 2510.03

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3899 - Ellory Queen's Ninth Birthday

Ellory turned nine years old today.

I think.

Her birthday is a guess.

She was a rescue, so I just guessed based on how old they said she was when we adopted her in December of 2016.

Ellory is my baby girl, which without prior knowledge, the workers at the vet were calling her. I know baby girl is not an unusual nickname, but it is special to Ellory. I call no other dog my baby girl and never will. Ellory is and will always be my baby. I even told her that if we got a younger dog, she would still be my baby. And that happened. When we got Essel, I re-assured Ellory that she is and always will be my one and only baby.

I am writing this post two days after her birthday, so I can recap a bit. She had eggs and chicken for dinner along with the usual treats (peanut butter for one of her pills).

I had her to the vet the day after her birthday and was re-assured that her weight loss is normal aging, and she is at her ideal weight. We are managing the Lupus with the vitamin e and the niacinamide, and her nose scabs are not the erosions, like big holes, in the skin that would indicate she's in a bad way and needs immuno-suppressent drugs.

I was so relieved by the vet's assessment that I cried.

I thought I had resolved the diarrhea and vomiting, but this morning (Thursday 10/23) she went out at 3 a.m. and again half way through a breakfast that she did not finish. I don't think she vomited but she may have been having diarrhea.

This next image is not really how Ellory behaves, but I thought of all three dogs watching the Superman move, especially Satchel and Ellory. I just love the image and had downloaded it recently.

I have collected many Ellory posts for this birthday post. As it happens, I do not always do a birthday post for each dog. I think it's time to change that.

Here's the links below to what follows as reprints after a set of new photos.

Happy Birthday to Ellory Queen.

Thanks for tuning in.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #837 - Happy Birthday Ellory Queen!

Hey Mom,

Today is the day we decided was Ellory's birthday.

Here's a series of recent pictures of Ellory wearing a bandage on her leg, which she managed to push off the leg wound and so we removed it.

Ellory does NOT like bandages on her leg.

I am not doing a lot text here for Ellory's birthday.

She's one years old by our best guess as of today.

She has some PTSD from her life before we adopted her on December 23rd of 2016.

I literally smother her with love, and it helps her, but loud noises and even a mildly annoyed tone among many things freak her out. I swatted at a fly the other night at bed time, and she could not settle comfortably in the bed for a couple of hours and tried to hide or get away.

Also, bandages freak her out, apparently.

Ellory got hurt playing with Rocco, the other dog temporarily staying with us. These pictures are from a few days ago, so the cut/bite/scratch/whatever has mostly healed since.

Ellory is a very sweet and loving puppy girl. She's our baby.

But... the bandage incident caused all sorts of PTSD behavior.

For instance, here's Ellory hiding... You can't really get a sense for how far away she is in either picture but I tried.

BANDAGE close up.

Bandage and Satchel, looking on with an eye roll and a request to go outside.

Satchel was like "Really? This puppy is crazy..."

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1339 - Ellory Queen turns TWO and is kicked out of Paradise

Funny: I had a typo when I first wrote the title and it read "licked out of Paradise," which is also accurate.

My sweet baby puppy, who will always be my baby puppy, turns two years old today on the birthday we picked for her because she was a rescue, and we guessed.

She had a pork skin stick and some new toys for gifts. I owe Satchel because I didn't make this much fuss when Satchel turned six (though I did when she turned five).

Though I posted this next bit a day later, here's what Ellory has to say about her special day.

ELLORY IS KICKED OUT OF PARADISE

Paradise is in the name of the daycare. It's an awesome place. I do not mean to be too disparaging, so I am not naming the actual name or linking or anything.

So last week Wednesday, I received this text from the owner and head dog wrangler:

Hi. So I don't think Ellery can come back to the ranch anymore. Today he grabbed a puggle by the neck/back and was ragdolling her. By the time I got to them and he let go she had a puncture on her back the size of a dime. Im going to the woodland vet in a bit to get it fixed up. I do ask that you cover the vet costs via our contract. I will pay for it and send you a invoice and you can pay me. Im sorry about this but he's just a bit to unpredictable for the ranch.

I was rather shocked. Ellory is VERY sweet and gentle. In playing here at home with Noodle, she is patient, kind, and loving, though occasionally she sets boundaries with growling.

Now, granted, there are times when on walks that Ellory has growled emphatically at other dogs. There was a scuffle in which she, supposedly,  bit another dog in the face (I was later told), but I attribute the former to some leash aggression, as Ellory wants to meet the other dog and play, dogs who do not seem "right" and so Ellory is being territorial, and with the "bite" that dog was mean.

We did see Ellory really be territorial last year when Rocko lived with us for a short time, and we just let him in the house without taking time to properly introduce him and Ellory. To mark her territory and protect her pack, Ellory was ready to fight this intruder dog. But once we ushered them both outside and had them meet on a walk and sniff each other, then Ellory was fine. She and Rocko were best friends and played all the time until he, Rocko, moved out.

Ellory will be aggressive to protect others, protect her home and family, and protect herself, but she rarely initiates the aggression, and often, ultimately, will be submissive to other dogs and show them her belly.

She has socialized with other dogs since she was little at both day care and the dog park. There have never been any incidents other than just a little rough play, which is normal, especially for lab mixes.

So, I asked the owner if Ellory had to be "kicked out"? Was this a pattern of behavior? Have ther been other incidents? Or is this an isolated case?

And this was the reply:

Yeah she's had little aggressive tendencies here and there, usually when she's hyped up playing or chasing the ball. Unfortunately this time she had grabbed Libby by her back and wouldn't let go, there's about a dime size puncture and Courtney will be taking to vet. Ill let you know the outcome later today. I know she loves to come but I just can't risk dogs getting injured, I'm sorry.

Of course, I am going to side with my dog and defend her with my life.

I just wish she could explain with words.

I am certain that the other dog, a PUGGLE, was mean, smelled wrong, or Ellory was defending herself or another dog.

Luckily, we did not owe for a vet bill. Here's the wound with four staples.

So, no more day care for Ellory there, which is a shame as she loved it, came home exhausted, and every Wednesday they picked her up and brought her home. Ellory would go bonkers, making it difficult for me to open the door, and she was so excited to go that she would run into the shuttle bus without any help and jump in the driver's seat!

We're all sad about this, the owners of the day care, too, as you can read in the texts.

Just one note about Ellory. I think she's a true Empath. She seems to sense emotions and internalizes them. Of course, she prefers happy emotions. Since we moved, I cannot even swear under my breath if Ellory is within earshot as she will go upstairs and hide. Sometimes, she hides sensing my mood without me vocalizing anything. Yesterday, I spilled Ellory's dog food all over the kitchen floor. If I wasn't taking CBD, this might cause me to swear angrily. But I didn't make a sound. Ellory still left the room, worried that I might get angry. I didn't even feel angry.

Ellory may hide when I tell the other dogs "no."

Ellory is happiest playing, on a walk, or snuggling with her pack in bed all night and in the morning. She goes right back to bed after breakfast for more snuggle time.

She's a lover and a sweetheart.

I adore her, and so does everyone in her family and everyone who meets her.

Happy Birthday Ellory.

We all love you.

Here's how wonderful Ellory is in pictures.

I wouldn't trade her for anything.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #2198 - Ellory and the Cone

So, here's Ellory in her cone collar. How did that happen??

Some time before Friday February 12th, Ellory developed some wound or sore on her tail. I swear that I did not shut her tail in the sliding door. It has happened before, but I am extra careful now. I know it did not happen.

But returning from the back yard through the slider Friday the 12th, as I was toweling her off, she yelped in pain. When I tried more toweling, she yelped again and ran away. We discovered this dime size wound on her tail that she was licking incessantly and making worse.

We decided to wait and see what developed. Not sure why.

By Friday evening, it was bloody and smelled. She was getting blood and fluid on the bed and couches. And so, I decided to call the vet first thing Saturday morning.

Our vet is in Ridgefield not the Woodland one two minutes from our house because the Woodland one is limited and turned us away three years ago because they were not accepting new clients. Ridgefield is not that far. Maybe ten minutes down the I5.

Anyway because of the snow storm, no one was open Saturday. Our vet was closed. The Woodland vet wouldn't see us. The Longview vet was closed. And so I took Ellory to the "ER vet" down near Costco about a thirty minute drive down the I5. Normally, this would be an easy drive. But here in Washington, where no one is prepared for snow and ice, it was more of an adventure, even in a Subaru with all wheel drive. Mostly, me and the few other cars on the road drove down the middle of the highway. But in one stretch, there was so much frozen snow and ice that it made a rutty surface, like uneven and random rumble strips.

I managed to get Ellory to the ER and get her checked in. They took her inside and then a few minutes later they brought her back because the power had gone out. They explained that they did have a generator, but it was not working. I was welcome to wait or find another vet. They could give me the name of an ER pet hospital south of Portland. SOUTH OF PORTLAND.

I elected to wait, even though I had not had enough coffee yet and no breakfast. Soon, I was starving.

We waited a couple of hours and eventually power was restored from, I think they said, emergency city power. I was told that I had to leave Ellory and go back for her later. I was not thrilled about this prospect as I suspected that this return would be after dark, AND it was still snowing, HARD.

I gassed up Liesel's car. Somehow Costco's gas station was functional, and tried to find some fast food (because I was starving) but places were either without power or closed for the snow.

I did go back to get Ellory at almost 8 p.m. and the drive home in that frozen, crazy rumble strip area was even worse, over a mile or more of insane bumpiness. Terrible.

But we did it, and Ellory came without bandages, because the wound has to breathe, and wearing the cone. And with lots of drugs to take. We were also told to put this ointment on her tail and warm compresses, but after a week, she still will not let us even touch it anywhere, not even on the wounded part.

Also, she figured out how to crane around and get at her tail for licking, but amusingly, she cannot always remember how to do that, so she cannot do it constantly.

Maybe one more week of cone life.

LOW POWER MODE: I sometimes put the blog in what I call LOW POWER MODE. If you see this note, the blog is operating like a sleeping computer, maintaining static memory, but making no new computations. If I am in low power mode, it's because I do not have time to do much that's inventive, original, or even substantive on the blog. This means I am posting straight shares, limited content posts, reprints, often something qualifying for the THAT ONE THING category and other easy to make posts to keep me daily. That's the deal. Thanks for reading.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #2674 - PUPPY REPRINT from 2018 #992 - National Puppy Day Blog 2018 - Two Dog Trips

I was reminded today that it was time to do a puppies post BECAUSE some people, recent friends and followers on IG in particular, didn't even know I had dogs.

If you spend more than an hour with me, you surely learn that I am a nerd, I am married, I have two dogs, I am from Michigan, and I love it here at LCC and the PACNW.

And yet, I have not featured the dogs hereabouts in a while.

Here's the reprint of a post from March of 2018, which means this outing with the dogs was surely one of my first forays to explore my new environs after moving here in August of 2017.

Thanks for tuning in.

I am happy that you are here, and these dogs love you.

But then, these dogs love most everyone.

Blog Vacation Two 2022 - Vacation II Post #110
I took a "Blog Vacation" in 2021 from August 31st to October 14th. I did not stop posting daily; I just put the blog in a low power rotation and mostly kept it off social media. Like that vacation, for this second blog vacation now in 2022, I am alternating between reprints, shares with little to no commentary, and THAT ONE THING, which is an image from the folder with a few thoughts scribbled along with it. I am alternating these three modes as long as the vacation lasts (not sure how long), pre-publishing the posts, and not always pushing them to social media.

Here's the collected Blog Vacation I from 2021:

Satchel and Ellory on the East Fork of the Lewis River
Paradise Point State Park - Tuesday March 20, 2018
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #992 - National Puppy Day Blog 2018 - Two Dog Trips

Hi Mom,

Dogs and nature today but first.

GO BLUE!!!

That shirt shows "Michigan" in Chinese. I am assuming Mandarin, but I don't really know.

I am late posting this one, so I already know that Michigan is in the Final Four. Yay!!

So, Monday, I took the girls to the dog park in Ridgefield.

Satchel was immediately excited and started to cry and claw at the car door as soon as we pulled in the parking lot.

Ellory was less interested in sniffing as in running free off leash. I tried to get good video of her running full tilt and her amazing acceleration.

The girls enjoy some sunshine.

So, then on Tuesday, I took the girls to Paradise Point State park in Ridgefield.

These girls were VERY excited for a walk in a new place.

I like this photo because they're both so fixated and intense, but Ellory is so huge in the foreground.

This place is like a scene from Lord of the Rings.

I swear these woods are amazing.

Oh yeah. and there's a small waterfall.

So beautiful...

I know this next photo is blurry, but I needed a shot of this rock wall and the path. I will try to get a better shot in the future.

I am becoming a huge fan of moss and photographing moss.

This is East Fork of the Lewis River.

Just south of us here in Woodland, The main Lewis River turns west and empties into the Columbia. But there's an East Fork of the Lewis River that flows through this park and meets the Lewis River where it meets the Columbia River.

Awesome. Here's a visual of the map.

Ellory CU 2309_15

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3231 - Ellory's Adoption Day - Seven Years Ago

Seven years ago today, we adopted Ellory Queen from the animal shelter, a rescue, which is obvious, as she has PTSD from whatever she went through in the first 8-9 weeks of her life.

We were told her approximate age when we rescued her, so I arbitrarily set her birthday as October 21st, 2016.

Ellory continues our -el theme and her name is patterned after Ellery Queen, the mystery writer pen name.

I will be honest.

I did not want her.

I thought one dog was enough.

I was at my parents house wrapping presents, and I got a call about getting a new puppy.

By the end of the call, I thought it was decided that we were NOT getting another puppy.

I get home and SURPRISE. There's a new puppy named for one of the Gilmore Girls characters, possibly Rory. I forget.

I was pretty miffed. I was looking forward to a restful holiday break. Satchel was five years old. We had settled into a lifestyle.

And then Ellory.

I was only angry for a little while. I got over it pretty quickly because Ellory was so cute and loving.

Also, puppies sleep like 18 hours a day, so it's not that hard to handle them. And as one picture below shows, Ellory loved to sleep at my feet.

I didn't immediately love Ellory as much as I loved Satchel, but that also did not last.

I love my dogs equally, but I have a special bond with Ellory that's different than with Satchel.

In part, it's how Ellory smells, especially her ears, which are always full of gunk.

Then, it's because Ellory soaks up love; she never seems to grow tired of being smothered with affection.

Ellory is sweet and genuine.

She defers to Satchel, who is the alpha.

And she is still very much a puppy at age seven.

She will always be my baby puppy, even though we got a new puppy, who is a baby, just not MY baby puppy.

Ellory taught me that I can handle things I think will be hard that will bring me great joy.

She taught me that Satchel is not the only puppy I can love.

Dogs are angels from Heaven.

Also, Ellory made this concept my number one ethic:

So happy to celebrate Ellory's adoption day!!

Here's some of my favorite Ellory pictures followed by a reprint of her time with us published a few months after her adoption.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
