A Sense of Doubt blog post #3744 - Peter Gabriel Full Moon and New Moon Roundup - 2023-25 - Music Monday 2505.19

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3744 - Peter Gabriel Full Moon and New Moon Roundup - 2023-25 - Music Monday 2505.19

I love Peter Gabriel.

I am a huge fan.

Seeing the Security tour in 1983 is a high mark: one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I need to do a best concerts post.

I feel I have posted a lot about Peter Gabriel recently, but the bulk of the posts are mostly all from 2023.

I have sat on this post for a long time.

I had been keeping track of Gabriel's Full Moon reports as he released his new album one track at a time and both a bright side and dark side mix of each.

It's a great album!!

I like it more than Up but I am not sure it would make a top five Gabriel faves (studio albums only):

Security
Us
Passion
Peter Gabriel III

That fifth slot is a toss up between the new album i/o and So.

So has longevity in my listening to it and loving it, but top to bottom, I think i/o is a stronger album.

I will think on this topic and report back, readers.

I wish I had seen the tour for this album last year; it looks amazing.

What follows are a list of my Peter Gabriel posts from 2023-2024, the mixes of his Full Moon updates and of the various mixes for the new album, followed by Gabriel's email updates since the last time I posted.

Thanks for tuning in.

Hello everyone,

It’s been a while since our last full moon update, so it’s good to be back with you on the pink moon.

This edition comes on the cusp of the i/o Box Set release, which finally makes its way into the world on Friday. Thanks again to you all for your patience, you’ve been with us for the long haul on this one, so we very much appreciate that. Hope you enjoy the box once you have your hands on it.

In other news, we thought we’d remind you that each month we have still been releasing music into Peter’s Bandcamp subscription, which in the last couple of months has included previously unreleased demo songs, work in progress alternate versions and ambient pieces. More on that below...

We also have news of the new 4K version of Back to Front, coming in May, and some archive posters that remind us of the art project that accompanied the release of US.

Here we go....

Released on Friday 26 April the i/o Box Set is presented in a beautiful foil-blocked, clamshell box, with Bright-Side and Dark-Side stereo mixes in bespoke sleeves across 4 pieces of black vinyl cut at 33rpm. Bright-Side and Dark-Side mixes on CD, plus a Blu-ray disc of the In-Side Mix in Dolby Atmos, with hi-res versions of the Bright-Side and Dark-Side stereo mixes, too. You will need a Blu-ray player to play this third disc!

There's also a 56-page casebound book of expanded liner notes with Peter discussing each track, expanded cover art poster, and i/o download code with choice of 16 & 24bit download. Boom!

As many of you might know, alongside the moon cycle of new music releases last year, we also started a Bandcamp subscription which, for £3 a month, allowed access to alternate mixes of the songs from i/o and companion videos from Peter giving a deep dive into the making of the music. All that content is still there for subscribers new and old.

So far this year we have been delving a bit more into the archives and have made available previously unreleased (lovely) demo songs - Firebird and Funny Man - that pre-date Peter’s first album, we’ve also had three early incarnations (from 1978) of songs that you will know well from PG3 as well as pieces from the long out of print Real World Notes CDs, and the Full Stretch ambient tracks, which are re-workings of music from New Blood.

This month we have dropped the first live songs from the 'Lunatics in the Big Room' show that took place at Real World Studios in November 2003. Maybe you were there?

Hopefully you'll find plenty to enjoy in the subscription, so we’d love to see you over there too…

On 10 May, Mercury Studios are releasing the Back to Front concert in 4K. Though a theatrical version of the film was shown in cinemas in 4K, this is the first time that the whole concert has been made available in such high definition.

Back to Front is Peter’s 25th anniversary celebration of his landmark album So. To mark the event he reunited his original So touring band from 1986/87 (David Rhodes, Tony Levin, Manu Katché and David Sancious, with Jennie Abrahamson & Linnea Olsson) and for the very first time fans saw them play the multi-platinum selling album in its entirety. As a bonus for this release Back to Front includes “The Visual Approach” a fascinating feature on the creation of the live show (only presented in HD).

Finally, for this edition, we have been rooting around in the back of the RW Shop and found some archive posters with artwork from the US album.

Eleven artists were invited to create an image in a box, in response to the eleven tracks which Peter had written for the ‘US’ album. The criteria for the choices made were fourfold, that the work should have relationship to the feelings and content of the music, that the artists should come from different parts of the world, that both sexes should be well represented and that less well-known work should be given equal prominence.
A number of posters were printed at the time to celebrate these chosen works and we have recently rediscovered a small batch of them, which we are now making available. Unfortunately, we do not have posters for all the artists’ work but what we do have are:

Blood of Eden - Zadok Ben-David
Fourteen Black Paintings - Jordan Baseman
Only Us - Mickaël Bethe-Sélassié
Steam - Ian Hughes
Washing of the Water - Andy Goldsworthy

That's your lot for now, thanks for reading. Our love for those of you who reach the bottom of the mailer remains as strong as ever and we look forward to bringing you more news soon.

First time on vinyl for OVO

OVO is being released on vinyl for the first time, as part of this year’s Record Store Day which takes place on Saturday 12 April. The release marks the album’s 25th anniversary.

This limited Record Store Day edition comes in a gatefold jacket, with printed inner sleeves and a 20-page booklet with ‘The Story of OVO’ (not shown below). The album has been mastered for vinyl by Matt Colton at Metropolis and is pressed to 180g vinyl, blue and orange. Also contains a hi-res download code.

OVO is Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to the Millennium Dome Show in London, the 160-artist extravaganza that underwent 999 performances during the 365 days in 2000 that the Dome was open. Helping to tell the story of three generations of the same family living through three distinct eras – the past, the present, the future – Gabriel’s soundtrack accordingly draws from deep, long-held tradition and from contemporary grooves.

The album boasts a stellar cast, including Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser, Neneh Cherry, Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile and Iarla Ó Lionáird as well as Jocelyn Pook, Will Gregory, BT, The Dhol Foundation and The Black Dyke Band.

Some of the tracks from OVO have become fixtures of the Gabriel canon and regular live favourites, among them Downside-Up, Father, Son and The Tower That Ate People.

Pink moon update - April 2025

The convergence of Record Store Day and the April full moon - the Pink Moon no less - seemed like a good moment for a long overdue update.... so here we go...

Following on from Live Blood in 2022, Rated PG in 2019 and the two Scratch My Back 7"s of way back in 2010, this year our Record Store Day offering, as you know, is OVO.

Originally released in June 2000, it's the 25th anniversary of the album and the first time on vinyl.

This limited Record Store Day edition comes in a gatefold jacket, with printed inner sleeves and a 20-page booklet with ‘The Story of OVO’. The album has been mastered for vinyl by Matt Colton at Metropolis and is pressed to 180g vinyl, blue and orange. Also contains a hi-res download code.

Meanwhile, over on Bandcamp we are still continuing the monthly subscription that started around the release of the i/o album.

We are constantly digging in the archives for gems to share, and over the last few months we've had a focus on the development of Blood of EdenSky Blue and Don't Give Up (including a version of the song that was sent to Kate Bush ahead of the recording of her vocals). We've also found early versions of Mercy Street, a studio version of I Go Swimming and a demo of Down the Dolce Vita... so, if you haven't given the subscription a try so far, why not take a look? Hopefully there are some things of interest if you do. There's also a lovely community of subscribers over there too - big up to all of them reading this!

The Music Producers Guild, in association with Dolby and Mix With The Masters, has announced that Peter will receive the inaugural MPG Pioneer Award at their 2025 ceremony in April.

The MPG Awards takes place at The Troxy, in London, on Thursday 24th April.
"One of the most remarkable experiences of my life was making music with Kanzi and Panbanisha, two extraordinary Bonobo apes. They had grown up with Sue Savage-Rumbaugh in the Language Research Center in Georgia State in Atlanta and shown amazing ability in communicating with lexigrams that Sue and her partner Duane had created."

'It certainly gets you thinking. How many kids have to be shot at school before laws get changed? So many, many lives lost and for what?
Easy access to guns - especially automatic and semi-automatic weapons - is an obvious threat to life. We need effective action and laws to make sure all children, and all people, can live their lives without the threat of being murdered.'

I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
