But as I explained in yesterday's post, I was revising mixes for class, and this one also had broken links.

This one is only three years old and not five. Also, it's from March originally not October, so it's more like three and a half years old.

I am most sad about not showing my students this blog post because of all the cool images of heroic women, real and fictional.

I told them about it, though. The link to the original is on the You Tube page if any go there, but I was convinced to remove all blog links from my classes. This is a decision that I am not entirely comfortable with, but that's my ego talking.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1847 - "It's up to you to be a Super-Hero" Mix  - Musical Monday for 2003.09

For International Women's Month, a mix of MOSTLY women artists or at least women singers with a few stray tracks with no women but ones that seemed to fit the themes of the content.

I am focusing the mix on a song by Cat Power (with Iggy Pop) "Nothin' But Time" that features this line: "it's up to you to be a super-hero."

Of course, this struck me not just because of my fandom for super-heroes but my love of feminism and the strength of women.

Google results for "it's up to you to be a super-hero" are not as cool as I hoped. The image to the left came up in the search, but I had hoped for other memes.

There's not much else that inspires me.

So I am going to dress up this blog post with images and links to content about strong and powerful women elsewhere on my blog. After all, this is my first mix in months, and I like to have a theme on display.

This image is cool, but it's a boy and a church thing, so not really what I had in mind.

The mix track list here and a link in the title  followed by the video pod player followed by more women and cool blog stuff.

I tried to collect songs by women or sung by women that fit together starting and ending with Cat Power. Some songs came up in the assembly as You Tube works that way, such as Emmylou Harris' cover of "The Magdalene Laundries" for Joni Mitchell's 75th birthday, Hope Sandoval's "The Peasant," and St. Vincent's "Los Ageless." Others were chosen by me and are among my favorites, like "Galaxies" by Laura Veirs, "Lost" by Annie Lennox, and "Humpty Dumpty" by Aimee Mann, which actually mentions "super-heroes" and so seemed to fit with Cat Power's song.

NOTE: Added 2309.29: I edited this mix because of three unavailable videos replacing them with three new videos and then adding back one of them in a more stable link (Aimee Mann's official account), so that the mix totals 29 videos, which seemed appropriate because I did all that work on today the 29th. Due to the changes, I am going to reprint this mix. Here's the changes from the original track list:

I went a bit wild with the imagery! In between, grading I added images to women super heroes, great feminists, strong women activists, and some women musicians. I like compiling posts like this one with the links for images elsewhere on my blog. It shows how much I have done over the last six years, but I did not upload any new images. Our culture vilifies powerful women, or just women who speak out.

And it's not just the men. Women join the hate-mongering, women who are loathe to call themselves feminists because it will block their access to men.

What is so threatening to people -- mostly men -- about criticism of the sexism (even the outright misogyny) in comics or other male-dominated media?

I don't get it.

Asselin's criticism of the Teen Titans cover seemed reasonable and right on target. Besides, the art is just terrible from a technical POV, IMHO.

People can disagree, but why does the disagreement have to jump to rape threats?

Safety is of prime concern for people like Asselin or Anita Sarkeesian, who had to flee her home for fear of being attacked or murdered during the height of the Gamergate fiasco.

I wish I had millions. I would hire folks like Sarkeesian and Asselin to run think tanks to culture jam the shit of the world and to try to make the world a better place.

I don't have millions, but we can't just all work on that together anyway?

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
