A Sense of Doubt blog post #1258 - Neptune Frost

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1258 - Neptune Frost

Caveat: Once I again I am beholden to WARREN ELLIS for sharing this art work via his weekly newsletter ORBITAL OPERATIONS, you can subscribe at that link and you should.

And so, in our continuing department to vary the content of this blog (because not everyone likes the coding stuff), here's something completely different than the first two posts for this week.

Saul Williams shares in the middle of his Kickstarter pitch for his Neptune Frost musical the line:

"Help me fuck shit up. With Beauty."

Club Himbaza- Burundian refugee drummers
It's a powerful statement (see the link below). You can read his whole "long-winded" pitch on his Kickstarter page.

Williams has an ambitious project underway, and it's worth time an attention for those who love Zeitgeist, Afropunk and/or Afrofuturism, science fiction, gender issues, technology, and so much more.

"Hack tradition" the characters intone during the promo video (see below).

Africa is the new futurism cauldron of the cutting edge.

Or maybe it's just that we're finally listening.

Diversity has been an issue for sometime in science fiction as I have written about before regarding the HUGO AWARDS. John Scalzi has also had something to say about it at that link there on his name. But despite resistance, the science fiction world is getting more diverse because people want new ideas, new visions, difference, or even just something that actually resembles the real world diversity. NK Jemisin has recently dominated the Best Novel category for the Hugo Awards, and her third novel of the Broken Earth trilogy is up for the Hugo this year. I also wrote about my recent affection for Nnedi Okorafor earlier this year.

Neptune Frost is another step in this process.

Review the following and then consider kicking into the Kickstarter.

NEPTUNE FROST Kickstarter

From an otherworldy village made of recycled computer parts a hacking collective performs the most outrageous hacks in US & world history full of social commentary & gutsy platform takeovers. They are the virtual heroes of a world drawn closer and closer to authoritarian rule until they cross the line that takes them from beloved hackers to first-world terrorists.
Neptune Frost is the love story between an inter-sex runaway and a coltan miner and the virtual marvel born as a result of their union –
MartyrLoserKing—The world's #1 trend The Authority seeks to end.
Born of an e-waste camp far from the western eye, a village made of recycled computer parts sprouts on a hilltop in Burundi. This is the home of the world’s most subversive hacking collective inventively exposing the gluttonous feast on natural resources from belly of the beast using the gutsiest platform takeovers in the history of a mystery: Who is the MartyrLoserKing?

While Western intelligence looks to the usual suspects, a Dogon avatar whispers through a dream to reveal the coded mysteries of Sirius and the stars to an escaped coltan miner and an intersex runaway seeking refuge from a binary norm, revealing her divine circuitry as the eye of the storm. When their connection sparks the MartyrLoserKing is born.

MartyrLoserKing, the elusive African hacker whose team of “losers” and outcasts ignite the imagination of the world’s most “connected” generation through deep space, deep web penetration. A virtual hero for a world caught in perpetual analogue exploitation. Neptune Frost is the MartyrLoserKing.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
