A Sense of Doubt blog post #4215 - GRATITUDE - SoD Reprint from 2024

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4215 - GRATITUDE - SoD Reprint from 2024

Many people might think I overdo with commemorating my parents and their lives and that  I am wallowing in grief and over-focused on their deaths.

I would push back against this accusation. I have this blog for me more than for readers. Taking a week after the two year mark of my Dad's death feels right. I like looking at the old photos, the previous blog entries that I reprint.

And if I am "wallowing" in anything, it's gratitude. I have a great life. I am very thankful for my life and all the people who are and have been a part of it. My parents, surely, were a very important part of my life and in making it what it is.

I am celebrating my life, their lives, and in so doing I gain much needed perspective.

As I have written before, one does not "get over" grief. Instead one finds a way to absorb it into one's life, a way to live with it. I remind myself of that creed every day.

Thanks for tuning in.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3494 - TWO WEEKS LATER - Reprint of Hey Mom #217 and T-shirt #157 and #78 - GRATITUDE

It is not lost on me that though I originally had this post scheduled for yesterday, 9/10, posting it today on the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the WTC, Pentagon, etc.

I was not ready to write this post, and so I delayed.

I recently took a "character strengths" test, and GRATITUDE was my highest ranked character strength out of 24 such aspects of my personality.

I told the Big Guy, my Dad, about how grateful I am for everything in my life, most of which is due to him and my Mom.

I had thought of listing all those things for which I am grateful here, but maybe that's private.

Maybe all I need to write is how grateful I am. How deep my gratitude fills me.

I have regrets of things I have not done, opportunities I wish I had taken advantage of, but I am also pleased with my life, and I owe so much of that to my Dad. I told him so in his last hours.

We all should take the time to be mindful of gratitude and all things for which we are grateful each and every day.

I do.

This is blog is just one way that I show that gratitude.

I am still processing that two weeks ago I was holding Dad's hand and watching his breathing slow.

14 days. That's more sevens and fours (Mom died 7/4 and 7*4 is 28). And half of 28, the day Dad died.

14 days.

Seems longer.

Seems shorter.

But 62 years and 8 months. I am grateful for all of that time. So grateful.

BTW, I love the picture above that I believe my sister took as she is not in it. I am guessing it's late 1970s when I was in high school. I don't think it was from the early 1980s when I was in college. In one of the other photos, Lori looks young, maybe 8-9ish. Even 10. Could be 1980. I have all of Dad's little black books, so I could research it and maybe figure it out. But not today.

Thanks for tuning in.

“Personality is a seed that can only develop by slow stages through our life. There is no personality without definiteness, wholeness, and ripeness…. The achievement of personality means nothing less than the optimum development of the whole individual human being. It is impossible to foresee the endless variety of conditions that have to be fulfilled.… Personality is the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncrasy of a living being. It is an act of high courage flung in the face of life.”

Easter 1966

A Sense of Doubt blog post #2558 - REPRINT WEEK 08 - re: HEY MOM #217 - Gratitude

It's been a while since I featured a picture of myself and Mom up top, so there you go. Easter 1966. I am four years old. We're in Midland, living next to my grand parents and about to move to Traverse City. And my mother is still channeling Jackie Kennedy.

Hi there.

How are you?

Are you doing all right?

Please take care of yourself, okay?

Reprint week continues with a reminder about gratitude, which is one of my highest values.

I would not be whom I am and where I am if not for other people who love and support me.

My amazing wife alone deserves a great deal of this praise even though she does not like me to even mention her on my blog. But when I mention her in this context, it's more about me than it is about her. It's about how great she is at supporting ME.

So that.

But just for some extra value, here's where I originally wrote about gratitude:

T-shirt #157: Gull Lake

And an excerpt:

LAST WORD ON THE GRATITUDE THING: I got the idea for the gratitude prayer (meditation, list, incantation, catalogue, rumination, reflection, or whatever you want to call it) from a movie called The Secret. I am not quite promoting the movie as a "true" exposure of an actual science. In fact, many of the stories in the film are a bit fatuous. However, I like watching it. I showed it to a class (my second viewing) about a month ago, and the idea of the daily gratitude thing struck me. In the movie, one of the interviewees (I forget which one and it's not important) explained how he had a rock in his pocket. At night, he would set it on his dresser with the other contents of his pockets. The next morning, he would retrieve it and remember to list the things for which he was grateful as a daily routine, like a prayer. He had a visitor from South Africa and told the man about his rock and gratitude practice. The man called it a "gratitude rock." After returning to South Africa, he wrote his American friend and asked for some gratitude rocks to be sent to him because one of his children was very sick, and he did not have the money to seek medical care for the child. The interviewee balked at sending "gratitude rocks" because, after all, "they are just rocks," he said. But he found three nice rocks and sent them to his South African friend. Months later, the South African wrote back. The rocks worked! His son was healed and recovered. They paid for his medical treatment by selling a hundred gratitude rocks. People believed in the power of the gratitude rocks.

I found this story inspirational. I do not use a rock, but every day, I make my gratitude list. I send energy into the universe. I focus on the positive and try to limit or dismiss the negative.

I think it's working.

LOW POWER MODE: I sometimes put the blog in what I call LOW POWER MODE. If you see this note, the blog is operating like a sleeping computer, maintaining static memory, but making no new computations. If I am in low power mode, it's because I do not have time to do much that's inventive, original, or even substantive on the blog. This means I am posting straight shares, limited content posts, reprints, often something qualifying for the THAT ONE THING category and other easy to make posts to keep me daily. That's the deal. Thanks for reading.

Easter 1966
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #217 - Gratitude

Hi Mom, Here's some content from my T-shirts blog. I am still trying to catch up since I have fallen behind on my daily regimen.

I am very grateful for you, Mom, and for our family (see next two photos).

I think about our times together very often, Mom. These memories fill me with warmth and love and an ache that is never going to subside.

At least, I know that I told you how grateful I am for you. I know that I did not leave anything unsaid or finish our time together on hurtful or hateful words.

I am grateful to have lived with you for so long, to be able to be raised by you, and then in turn, to be able to help take care of you. I am grateful that you saw me get married and got to know my wife and kids and pets (Vespers and Satchel).

I am grateful for all you have given me because it's so much and I find new layers of it all the time.

FROM T-SHIRT #78

So, I am very grateful for Suzanne Vega and all that she has given me in my life, all that I have shared with her through music, what seems like deeply personal music, without knowing her at all, though feeling like I do know her, know her music.

So, each morning, I run the list of things for which I am grateful. I am not always listing musical artists, like Suzanne Vega, because I focus mostly on my family and community. Though from time to time, musical artists will drift into my consciousness, and I will thank the universe for them, infuse the positive energy of my love into the fabric of the cosmos, because, after all, we are all connected.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4203 - Letter to Dad #49 - Childhood Home - The Hazelwood House - 1979

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4203 - Letter to Dad #49 - Childhood Home - The Hazelwood House - 1979

Hi Big Guy, I have been scanning more old photos.

The interiors are the newly scanned photos.

I decided to start with photos in your files of the exterior, which from the looks they were taken when we bought the house as none of the changes are in evidence and the back side, which I chose as my featured top photo, looks very shabby, as if the previous owners couldn't be bothered to paint before putting the house on the market. Again, I wish I had gone through these photos with you while you were still here to ask these questions.

I chose the backside of the house for the topper and the image I will push to social media because that's where I spent the majority of my time. Seeing the back yard, lights up my brain with so many memories and so much love for that AMAZING property where I grew up (though I was seven years old when we moved there).

Another reason I think these photos were taken when you bought it is that this is obviously summer. The trees are leafed out and green, and the front door is open with just the screen door clasped as you can see right into the house. I hope to find exterior shots from when we sold it.

So before I get into all the photos. Things are going well here. I am on break and don't start my practicum for another week. Started teaching creative writing this week for the first time in FIVE years and that's going well. WRITING ON MY NOVEL EVERY DAY. Dog walks, dinner, a birthday (not mine), and you know, all the usual stuff. Reading on the porch. Life is good.

It just hit me that we lived in the Hazelwood house for exactly ten years - August 1969 - August 1979, though we might have moved LABOR DAY. I will have to check your little black books, Dad.

On to curating the photos.

Here's the exterior now:

I presume you took these photos when you listed the house for sale, which would mean these photos were taken in the summer of 1979, which is when we moved. That is consistent with other photos in the batch. I was 17 years old then, and Lori was ten years old. You were 44, and Mom was 43.

This is the entry you designed and built.
I love that the top of the closets was a place for plants, though I think it was your job to water the harder to reach ones.
Love the windows and the glass roof.
I remember helping you stain those doors.

The house faced due north, so not as much sun here in this room as you might have wanted, but you couldn't change the entry space.

Judging from the recent exterior photos above, it looks like someone removed this glass roof and replaced it with a smaller sky light.

Check out that orange tile and the cool rug. I wonder what happened to that rug.

This is the half bath off the Master bedroom. I always wondered why you didn't make it a full bath. Could you not afford it?
I am pretty sure that's your reflection not mine, though I was old enough to take these photos.

Check out those lights!!

Here's the hallway with all the Philippine Mahogany you installed in the wood slat walls and the wood dividers in the ceiling. Straight ahead is the door to the master bed room, and so the bathroom above is through there and left. The first door to the left that is visible is a closet with the main bathroom door next, which is not very visible in this photo. My room is at the end of hall and right with Lori's room next on the right. Too bad you did not take more photos because I think the extra phone we installed for my Magic business was in my room and not the hall?

The thermometer/barometer in the glass case is in the right foreground and is visible in at least one more photo in this batch.

Kitchen photos. My scanner is not that great and so I lost some definition in the photos. I had forgotten about the fruit mobile in the back left near the opening to the basement and the garage (which I wish you had taken pictures of). We never upgraded that oven? I see Mom's cookie jar and tea pot on the counter next to the oven. And this was after you hoked up the dishwasher (bottom right) so we did not have to wheel it to the sink and connect the hose each time.

I don't recall that the clock above the phone was in the kitchen of the new house. In other older photos, the clock was on the counter. How long before you hung it, Dad?

Here's the yellow curtains that replaced the burlap ones on older photos.

I had forgotten about the hanging plants.

And Mom or you could not curl up the electrical cord for the iron? Mom's kettle. I wonder if that's napkins behind the sale and pepper shakers on the counter.

Another clue these were taken in the summer and perhaps as keep sakes before we moved not as photos to sell the house (which they didn't do before the Internet, yes?) are the birthday candles on the table, indicating this is August, after Lori's birthday.

We never upgraded the stove either. Cool wall controls!!

However, I think the refrigerator went with us to the new house?

Was it at this time that I lost the washer or dryer as we tried to haul them up the basement stairs? Or was I younger and that's when we bought a new one (if we did, I don't know)?

I vividly remember losing my grip on the appliance on its dolly cart and trying to keep it from rolling down the stairs and it dragged me, banging my butt on at least a couple of steps.

The living room. The wall hangings did go with us as did the lamps. I love the slats in the door to the porch. I wish you had photographed the porch.

In the new house, you did not have a space for the lamp as the couch went all the way back. I assume we left these cushions.

But did Mom have things on the ledge at the new house. The couch was constructed differently. It had the same wood trim for the cushions to fit into but above that was a wooden box for the lights.

The other view of the living room with a view of some of the big windows but not the entire wall. I know film was expensive then but I miss some of the views.

I had forgotten that the heat vents were under the rock garden. Love those wood slat walls!

No aquarium? I know that made it to the other house but did we ever use it again?

And I am not sure the stereo is here... No, by then we had cobbled it for the case for my PA for my magic shows.

I am hoping there are pictures somewhere with the aquarium. I know the stereo is featured in many.

Lori's room. I had forgotten about the shelves on the other side of the bed. That canopy and all the girlie things were such a testament to what Mom wanted when she was a girl.

I remember all those stuffed animals and dolls.

The vanity, which is an interesting word for it, yes?

I know that came with us to the new house. Did the canopy bed?

I used the vanity table at Richland Woods. The stool, also, had re-use.

I wonder when we lost the Raggedy Ann and Andy waste basket?

The main bathroom. It's not easy to see the orange curtains and toilet lid cover.

More wood slat ceiling.

My room. I would give anything to zoom in to what's on the dresser. But, hey, I still have and use the dresser!! Even though Essel chewed the handle on the lowest drawer.

I wish you had taken close photos of the space under the bed. I know I had a stereo there and lots of shelves for books. I miss that ladder.

I had forgotten about the Owl mobile.

I am pretty certain that the extra phone was just to the left on the wall opposite the door.

Other view of my room. I would give anything to zoom in to what's on the desk. I had for several things, like that I used Mom's favorite white stool as my seat. I also did not remember the type writer being off to the side on what looks like a TV tray.

One can almost make out that Tiger cartoon character, a figurine standing upright near the jar with pencils. I wonder about so much else on the desk, the books on the shelves. I know many of those are magic books.

Master bedroom. I had forgotten Mom had so much perfume!

It's also interesting that the World Book set was in here,. I had forgotten.

Door to the half bath, which was a slider and is tucked away in the left door jamb.

The dresser you built.

This all brings back so many memories. The book shelves. The white stackable tables as night stands on which are piled many reading things.

Dining room. That table was used in many ways for years but not long after moving to West Gull Lake drive, it was retired for the fancier one. I had forgotten that we used those wooden folding chairs as seating around this table.

A good view of the thermometer/barometer. Lori's birthday candles. No stereo at the end of the rock garden shelf in the living room, which isn't quite visible in the other photo. Flowers.

Prominently featured, that painting. It had been in your bad room? Or it went there in the new house?

I love that painting. And I have it now. I need to hang it.

That's all.

I wish I had more photos.

I loved this house. I loved living there.

Thanks, Dad. You did great.

Next week is the two year mark since you died.

Love,
christopher

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4175 - Letter to Dad #45 - Mumps? A Victory, New Stuff, and an Author Event

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4175 - Letter to Dad #45 - Mumps? A Victory, New Stuff, and an Author Event

Hey Big Guy,

On the back of the photo above, Mom wrote: "swollen glands: mumps?"

I am not sure that I see the swelling but then I have few points of comparison.

What's on my shirt? The word "hate" is visible, but I doubt it's an "I hate" something shirt.

But I have no idea what it says.

I am dragging a little as I was up past my bed time last night to go to an author event with a friend.
It was an amazing event, very inspiring. And now I have a new favorite author/artist as Ocean Vuong (the author I went to see) was interviewed by Dao Strom (my new fave), who is also a musician and lives here in Portland.

Following up on last week's reported school thing, I WON!! I can't believe it.

I am still trying to process that I won out on my complaint and my grade was changed, restoring my A and setting me up to very likely finish with a 4.0 GPA overall as I don’t think the support classes for the internship are more than a pass/fail situation. I just can’t believe I won my argument. I didn’t expect to. But I was right. Now, I have 180 pts left to earn = 150 in the final project (third part of what I got the zero on initially) and a 30 pt quiz. I tend to always get full credit on the tests and quizzes. So that leaves the project and I can get as a low as a 100/150 and still keep my A. I doubt I will score that low. I tend to do great work, and this time I will not forget to attach the articles. So, that’s all a huge relief.

I had attached SO MUCH self worth to my GPA, it was difficult to adjust to maybe losing the 4.0, but now I am likely to keep it. And then I am essentially done.

Satchel is about the same, though the cough sometimes sounds scary and sometimes just like it was before the meds. She finished the antibiotic and is still coughing so likely not an infection.

Short report this week because I need to walk the dogs, do work outside as it is much cooler today, and run to town. TRIM on my driver's door popped loose and needs gluing, which I hope the auto place can do easily and inexpensively and without an appointment.

Don't feel like cooking or grilling today so either eating left overs or getting some kind of take out.

New food truck at the marina has hamburgers and CHILI DOGS!!!

You would be happy to learn, BG, that my friend, the one who went to the author thing with me, is a handyman and will help me with projects around the house.

More next week.

Love you,
christopher

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4161 - Letter to Dad #43 - Photos By Year of Satchel, Her Booness

Hi Big Guy, Someone at the vet (North County Animal Hospital) asked to see baby pictures of Satchel.
So I decided to make a select photo gallery by year.

I am concerned that Satchel has congestive heart failure.

Her 14th birthday is next Friday (the 17th).

Here we go...

I love you. More next week, dad.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
