A Sense of Doubt blog post #4228 - "Book of Love" - Peter Gabriel

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4228 - "Book of Love" - Peter Gabriel

I love this song.

What else is there to say?

Enjoy.

Thanks for tuning in.

Nov 10, 2015
"The Book of Love" was written by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields and features on Peter's album Scratch My Back.

The 'Scratch My Back' album, released in 2010, was conceived as a songwriters exchange project where Peter covered some of his favourite songs and in return the artists he chose would then cover one of his songs. The reciprocal album And I'll Scratch Yours was released in 2013.

This version of "The Book of Love" was arranged by Nick Ingman with Peter Gabriel and Will Gregory and features the vocals of Melanie Gabriel.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3849 - National Anthem Mix - Everyone is So Near - We're in this Together - Music Monday for September FIRST, 2025

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3849 - National Anthem Mix - Everyone is So Near - We're in this Together - Music Monday for September FIRST, 2025

An episode of the final season of Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale featured the song "The National Anthem" by Radiohead from the 2000 album Kid A.

The horns in the song were influenced by Charlie Mingus.

The repeating bass line is urgent and a stern warning of the horrors to come, not fully envisioned in the year 2000 or were they?

Critics were of mixed opinion about the song, some savage in their criticism, but its warning, its clarion call bass line and the cacophony of horns that follow is even more relevant in 2025 than it was twenty-five years ago.

This song provided the focal point, even a fulcrum, for this music mix.

I have curated it for a couple of months trying to get a good sequence. I did a pretty good job with the mix, though I still feel that I could link the sounds a bit better.

In terms of the content of the songs, though not every song speaks to this theme, the general theme is terror, horror, abject disbelief, and more about what I call the STATE OF THE HATE NATION, which is its own category on the blog.

The mix moves from loud to quiet and shifts tone several times with some artists heavily featured, such as Radiohead and assorted solo projects, Peter Gabriel, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails, and a few more. The mix is framed by "The Spoils" by Massive Attack, which is the last track, and though it cannot be the first track, because of the Radiohead, it is the fifth, so early in the mix.

Originally, it was the third track, but when I really fell in love with the sound of the Fever Ray song
"Keep The Streets Empty For Me," I had to get that song early in the mix. Radiohead's "The Pyramid Song" had to go with it as those flow well. Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill" felt right after Radiohead's "The National Anthem," so when adding the other two songs, "The Spoils" shifts down to the five spot.

Lyrically, "The Spoils" seems to intersect with Radiohead's "The National Anthem," at least in my head.

Peter Gabriel's "The Court" musically feels right in following "the Spoils." And lyrically it feels like a culmination of all the songs before it in the mix.

And then a big shift to a signature anthem song for me as I shared last week:

I also included one of Paul Weller new songs from this year's album, a cover version of the Guerillas song from 1969. I almost took out that song because I didn't think it fit, but the more I listened, the more I think it does fit.

Cabaret Voltaire, Lorde, and Nick Cave have to be in here, too.

I removed a half dozen or more songs and replaced them with tunes that fit much better like "Strangers" by the Kinks, "Farewell Transmission" by Ohia, "Bete Noire" by Bryan Ferry, and "Untitled" (2012 Remaster) by Interpol.

"Anguish, Fear, Lamenting" as the 10,000 Maniacs sang in the song about dropping the first atomic bomb on Japan: "Grey Victory."

I also have some great sequences in terms of how songs link in sound and content, like this one:

[18] Carriers "Every Time I Feel Afraid" official lyric video
[19] Doechii - Anxiety (Visualizer)
[20] Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Spitting Off The Edge of the World ft. Perfume Genius (Live in KC)
[21] Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong
[22] Cabaret Voltaire : Do Right

Feeling afraid, anxiety, spit off the edge of the world, though hedge (might be wrong), but then DO RIGHT.

The mix has good diversity though not the widest scope of diversity. But a variety of men, women, groups, people of color, and time periods.

This mix of great music is helping me; I hope it helps you, too.

PUSH THE SKY AWAY!

35 songs in this mix for 1935, the year my father was born.

Here's just the main song, a live version.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3751 - Solsbury Hill, Musical Monday for 2505.26

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3751 - Solsbury Hill, Musical Monday for 2505.26

I had no idea who Peter Gabriel was when I discovered this song. I will explain. But first:

Memorial Day.

This seems like a good post about change and decisions that are validated by reflection, which is part of the process of recognizing and honoring the dead on a day like today.

I memorialize my lost loved ones.

In part, I honor them in writing about this song.

I was starting to get into music more. I can't remember if this memory is from early college or late high school, but my Mom went with me to a record store or a store with a lot of records in the mall. I want to say it was called State Vitamin

One of the albums I chose was Peter Gabriel's first album. She told me I could pick out five records. We're talking vinyl LPs.

I cannot remember what all I chose. Though if I could, it would help me narrow down if I was still in high school or not.

For instance, if this is when I bought the Kansas album Point of No Return, which I know I had while in high school, then that gift places this trip better in time. But I can't remember, and this is not something that my parents, let alone my mother, would remember either. Regardless, sometimes from 1978 to 1980 we went to that store, I chose five albums, and one of the them was what is known as Peter Gabriel 1 or the Car Album.

The purpose of the trip to the store was to discover new music, and so I surely selected five different bands or artists and some that I did not know so as to discover them. I miss those days of discovery and gifts, uncomplicated days in which I was opening doors to learn new things. I still learn things these days, but when I knew less, the opening up was far more significant.

I remember more now (written days after I wrote the above): I know this is when I also chose the Genesis album Wind and Wuthering without knowing that Peter Gabriel was a former member of the band. I may have also chose the Kansas album Leftoverture with "Carry on My Wayward Son." Maybe a Cars album? Devo? Not sure. But certain of the Genesis album and reasonably sure of the Kansas album.

And Peter Gabriel's album.

This album caught my eye because of the cover art. I liked the simplicity of it, the water, the image of the man in the car. What a great photo.

And then I listened to it.

The first song was unlike anything I had ever heard before.

"Moribund the Burgermeister" was a weird and unusual track, strange as a first track, and quite off-putting to my fledgling musical explorations.

But I stuck with it because soon the second track, "Solsbury Hill," would become one of my favorites in all of music.

Later, "Here Comes the Flood," especially when I discovered Robert Fripp's Exposure and found the track there, too.

My first Gabriel album and one I dearly love, it does not make my top five Gabriel albums as I shared recently in this post (which also lists all the Gabriel posts from the last two years):

That top five list:
Security
Us
Passion
Peter Gabriel III
i/o

the second five
Peter Gabriel I
So
Up
Long Walk Home
Scratch My Back

Peter Gabriel I definitely ranks above So despite loving "Red Rain," "In Your Eyes," and "Mercy Street." Oh and especially "Don't Give Up."

I liked Up well enough and saw that tour, so it ranks in the top ten, not that there that many Gabriel albums to rank. I have never been a fan of the second album, though it has some good songs, like "On the Air" and "Exposure." But Long Walk Home and Scratch My Back edge that second solo album.

As for the top five, it's a very tough call as I wrote in that previous blog post linked above. All five albums could be ranked in various orders in the top five. But in really examining my feelings, and the way the tour for Security changed my life and view of music, another of the very best shows I have ever seen (I need to make that list), I have to rank it number one, closely followed by Us, and I wish I had seen that tour. As albums, without the concerts, those are very much tied. Passion edges the third solo album only in numbers of times I have listened to it, though the third album ranks above the new one, i/o, maybe only because I have not had that much time with it yet. A large part of these favorite rankings, it seems to me, are affected by the number of years with the album and the number of listens as opposed to getting all the albums at the same time and simply ranking them by some merit system. This rankings is not what I think are the BEST albums in order, but what are my favorites.

But if I am ranking Peter Gabriel songs, "Solsbury Hill" is definitely top five. I hesitate to do a top five because I will forget some songs, but I would guess it might be this:

TOP FIVE PETER GABRIEL SONGS

"Washing of the Water"
"Solsbury Hill"
"Secret World"
"Wallflower"
"Don't Give Up"

As you see, I have a love for the slow songs with great singing parts. I hesitate to call them ballads. Ballad-like?

Also, I do not believe that the first album came with lyrics, so it was over years of listening that I got most of them and then could be more certain with the postings on the Internet once that became a thing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solsbury_Hill_(song)

I always felt that the song was about a visitation either by extra-dimensional spirits, faeries, or space aliens.

Gabriel leaves all of that open to interpretation.

Gabriel has said of the song's meaning, "It's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might get ... It's about letting go."[9]

Google AI shared:

The Peter Gabriel song "Solsbury Hill" is widely understood as an allegory for the singer's decision to leave the band Genesis and pursue a solo career. It's about personal epiphany, breaking free from a stifling situation, and making a leap of faith. Gabriel himself has said it's about being prepared to lose what you have for what you might gain, and about letting go. The song also speaks to the courage it takes to make big life changes.

There's also an "about the song" video at the end of the post.

Regardless of how one interprets the song, it's definitely about making a change and making the right decision to then be welcomed "home."

This song has been an anthem in my life since I discovered it.

Below are lyrics and multiple versions and performances, including a cover by Sia.

I adore this song.

Thanks for tuning in.

Official music video of "Solsbury Hill" performed by "Peter Gabriel".

Lyrics
Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night
He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing, stretching every nerve
I had to listen had no choice
I did not believe the information
I just had to trust imagination
My heart going boom, boom, boom
Son, he said, grab your things I've come to take you home
To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut
So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
Till I thought of what I'd say
And which connection I should cut
I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom, boom, boom
Son, he said, grab your things I've come to take you home
When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I want to be
And liberty she pirouette
When I think that I am free
Watched by empty silhouettes
Close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
So I will show another me
Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going boom, boom, boom
Hey, I said, you can keep my things they've come to take me home
Come back home
Come back home
Come back home

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3744 - Peter Gabriel Full Moon and New Moon Roundup - 2023-25 - Music Monday 2505.19

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3744 - Peter Gabriel Full Moon and New Moon Roundup - 2023-25 - Music Monday 2505.19

I love Peter Gabriel.

I am a huge fan.

Seeing the Security tour in 1983 is a high mark: one of the best concerts I have ever seen. I need to do a best concerts post.

I feel I have posted a lot about Peter Gabriel recently, but the bulk of the posts are mostly all from 2023.

I have sat on this post for a long time.

I had been keeping track of Gabriel's Full Moon reports as he released his new album one track at a time and both a bright side and dark side mix of each.

It's a great album!!

I like it more than Up but I am not sure it would make a top five Gabriel faves (studio albums only):

Security
Us
Passion
Peter Gabriel III

That fifth slot is a toss up between the new album i/o and So.

So has longevity in my listening to it and loving it, but top to bottom, I think i/o is a stronger album.

I will think on this topic and report back, readers.

I wish I had seen the tour for this album last year; it looks amazing.

What follows are a list of my Peter Gabriel posts from 2023-2024, the mixes of his Full Moon updates and of the various mixes for the new album, followed by Gabriel's email updates since the last time I posted.

Thanks for tuning in.

Hello everyone,

It’s been a while since our last full moon update, so it’s good to be back with you on the pink moon.

This edition comes on the cusp of the i/o Box Set release, which finally makes its way into the world on Friday. Thanks again to you all for your patience, you’ve been with us for the long haul on this one, so we very much appreciate that. Hope you enjoy the box once you have your hands on it.

In other news, we thought we’d remind you that each month we have still been releasing music into Peter’s Bandcamp subscription, which in the last couple of months has included previously unreleased demo songs, work in progress alternate versions and ambient pieces. More on that below...

We also have news of the new 4K version of Back to Front, coming in May, and some archive posters that remind us of the art project that accompanied the release of US.

Here we go....

Released on Friday 26 April the i/o Box Set is presented in a beautiful foil-blocked, clamshell box, with Bright-Side and Dark-Side stereo mixes in bespoke sleeves across 4 pieces of black vinyl cut at 33rpm. Bright-Side and Dark-Side mixes on CD, plus a Blu-ray disc of the In-Side Mix in Dolby Atmos, with hi-res versions of the Bright-Side and Dark-Side stereo mixes, too. You will need a Blu-ray player to play this third disc!

There's also a 56-page casebound book of expanded liner notes with Peter discussing each track, expanded cover art poster, and i/o download code with choice of 16 & 24bit download. Boom!

VISIT THE REAL WORLD STORE
As many of you might know, alongside the moon cycle of new music releases last year, we also started a Bandcamp subscription which, for £3 a month, allowed access to alternate mixes of the songs from i/o and companion videos from Peter giving a deep dive into the making of the music. All that content is still there for subscribers new and old.

So far this year we have been delving a bit more into the archives and have made available previously unreleased (lovely) demo songs - Firebird and Funny Man - that pre-date Peter’s first album, we’ve also had three early incarnations (from 1978) of songs that you will know well from PG3 as well as pieces from the long out of print Real World Notes CDs, and the Full Stretch ambient tracks, which are re-workings of music from New Blood.

This month we have dropped the first live songs from the 'Lunatics in the Big Room' show that took place at Real World Studios in November 2003. Maybe you were there?

Hopefully you'll find plenty to enjoy in the subscription, so we’d love to see you over there too…

On 10 May, Mercury Studios are releasing the Back to Front concert in 4K. Though a theatrical version of the film was shown in cinemas in 4K, this is the first time that the whole concert has been made available in such high definition.

Back to Front is Peter’s 25th anniversary celebration of his landmark album So. To mark the event he reunited his original So touring band from 1986/87 (David Rhodes, Tony Levin, Manu Katché and David Sancious, with Jennie Abrahamson & Linnea Olsson) and for the very first time fans saw them play the multi-platinum selling album in its entirety. As a bonus for this release Back to Front includes “The Visual Approach” a fascinating feature on the creation of the live show (only presented in HD).

Finally, for this edition, we have been rooting around in the back of the RW Shop and found some archive posters with artwork from the US album.

Eleven artists were invited to create an image in a box, in response to the eleven tracks which Peter had written for the ‘US’ album. The criteria for the choices made were fourfold, that the work should have relationship to the feelings and content of the music, that the artists should come from different parts of the world, that both sexes should be well represented and that less well-known work should be given equal prominence.
A number of posters were printed at the time to celebrate these chosen works and we have recently rediscovered a small batch of them, which we are now making available. Unfortunately, we do not have posters for all the artists’ work but what we do have are:

Blood of Eden - Zadok Ben-David
Fourteen Black Paintings - Jordan Baseman
Only Us - Mickaël Bethe-Sélassié
Steam - Ian Hughes
Washing of the Water - Andy Goldsworthy

That's your lot for now, thanks for reading. Our love for those of you who reach the bottom of the mailer remains as strong as ever and we look forward to bringing you more news soon.

First time on vinyl for OVO

OVO is being released on vinyl for the first time, as part of this year’s Record Store Day which takes place on Saturday 12 April. The release marks the album’s 25th anniversary.

This limited Record Store Day edition comes in a gatefold jacket, with printed inner sleeves and a 20-page booklet with ‘The Story of OVO’ (not shown below). The album has been mastered for vinyl by Matt Colton at Metropolis and is pressed to 180g vinyl, blue and orange. Also contains a hi-res download code.

OVO is Peter Gabriel’s soundtrack to the Millennium Dome Show in London, the 160-artist extravaganza that underwent 999 performances during the 365 days in 2000 that the Dome was open. Helping to tell the story of three generations of the same family living through three distinct eras – the past, the present, the future – Gabriel’s soundtrack accordingly draws from deep, long-held tradition and from contemporary grooves.

The album boasts a stellar cast, including Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser, Neneh Cherry, Paul Buchanan from The Blue Nile and Iarla Ó Lionáird as well as Jocelyn Pook, Will Gregory, BT, The Dhol Foundation and The Black Dyke Band.

Some of the tracks from OVO have become fixtures of the Gabriel canon and regular live favourites, among them Downside-Up, Father, Son and The Tower That Ate People.

Pink moon update - April 2025

The convergence of Record Store Day and the April full moon - the Pink Moon no less - seemed like a good moment for a long overdue update.... so here we go...

Following on from Live Blood in 2022, Rated PG in 2019 and the two Scratch My Back 7"s of way back in 2010, this year our Record Store Day offering, as you know, is OVO.

Originally released in June 2000, it's the 25th anniversary of the album and the first time on vinyl.

This limited Record Store Day edition comes in a gatefold jacket, with printed inner sleeves and a 20-page booklet with ‘The Story of OVO’. The album has been mastered for vinyl by Matt Colton at Metropolis and is pressed to 180g vinyl, blue and orange. Also contains a hi-res download code.

Meanwhile, over on Bandcamp we are still continuing the monthly subscription that started around the release of the i/o album.

We are constantly digging in the archives for gems to share, and over the last few months we've had a focus on the development of Blood of Eden, Sky Blue and Don't Give Up (including a version of the song that was sent to Kate Bush ahead of the recording of her vocals). We've also found early versions of Mercy Street, a studio version of I Go Swimming and a demo of Down the Dolce Vita... so, if you haven't given the subscription a try so far, why not take a look? Hopefully there are some things of interest if you do. There's also a lovely community of subscribers over there too - big up to all of them reading this!

"One of the most remarkable experiences of my life was making music with Kanzi and Panbanisha, two extraordinary Bonobo apes. They had grown up with Sue Savage-Rumbaugh in the Language Research Center in Georgia State in Atlanta and shown amazing ability in communicating with lexigrams that Sue and her partner Duane had created."

'It certainly gets you thinking. How many kids have to be shot at school before laws get changed? So many, many lives lost and for what?
Easy access to guns - especially automatic and semi-automatic weapons - is an obvious threat to life. We need effective action and laws to make sure all children, and all people, can live their lives without the threat of being murdered.'

The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
