As I have mentioned before, one of the benefits of doing reprints is my ability to edit and "fix" old posts, especially music mixes with broken videos.

In the early days of Music Monday (originally Musical Monday until I realized people might think I was posting about theatrical musicals, NOT), I posted each video in the mix one by one. This mix was one of the earliest Music Monday mixes made in my last year and last semester at WMU while studying for Calculus and some coding class (Java?).

I found "Voodoo in my Blood" by Massive Attack and this AMAZING video with Rosamund Pike and built a mix around it.

Now, the original and this reprint posts the original music mix track list and the revised because I dropped a song.

My mixes are only partially thematic. It would take too much time to really make a truly thematic mix unless it's all one artist. So there's always random elements. This one became, in part but not in whole, focused on women in music, but there are still weird songs that do not quite fit that theme or don't at all, like the Ed Sheeran song, which at least features a woman. The Young Fathers songs came up when playing this Massive Attack song and so are related in that way.

A mix like this happened as You Tube shared songs in my feed, and so I put them up on the monitor in the study room, and if I liked at least something about them, then I added them to the mix or at least a queue for future mixes.

So far this mix is stable, no "unavailable videos."

Hi Mom,

Welcome to another edition of things you would not really care about but would pretend to care about because I care about them, and you love me, Mom.

This is another in a series of playlists built while I hang out in the Star Trek rooms in Sangren and study Calculus, mainly, but also do various work things.

This one started with the startling eponymous track "Voodoo In My Blood" by trip hop pioneers Massive Attack and the hottest band in Scotland, if not the world, Young Fathers.

This video is amazing and very cinematic. It plays like a short film.

It's based on Andrzej Żuławski's 1981 film Posession, which was banned in the UK until 1999. I will share a video clip of the inspiring scene as well as a link to the entire film at the end of today's blog entry.

The video is chilling. I included several stills and one GIF from it. Wow.

Also, this edition of Musical Monday and its playlist was built mainly with the Google Algorithm that suggests other videos based on the viewing habits of other people who watched "Voodoo In My Blood." Pretty much all the music is new to me, but I did dump in some other tunes, such as Gabriel's "Rhythm of the Heat." There's a little incongruity here (Ed Sheeran), but I like it.

I kept to 13 videos, though I was trying to keep to 10. That's so tough.

I am still on my Sevdaliza kick, expect that to continue.

So multiples with Sevdaliza, Massive Attack, and Young Fathers.

I think it's a good set.

Feeling rather possessed this days as I try to cope, like the rest of you, with the State of the Hate Nation.

White men suck. I know. I am one.

But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. I rarely publish music posts on days other than Mondays,  but I am in reprint mode. I am probably posting another one tomorrow.

One benefit of reprinting a Music Monday post is that I get to edit the mix for hidden or unavailable videos. I replaced one in this mix, but it was just a different version of the same song and same showing from TV.

When I access my playlists on YOU TUBE via a PC, I can only see playlists in alphabetic mode up to M with some playlists excluded because YOU TUBE always wants to hide them from me.

When I asked YOU TUBE to fix the problem, as I PAY for Premium, they told me it was my problem with "cookies" (bullshit) even though I looked at my playlist on multiple machines and different browsers. 

This original post caught my attention because of the cover image (AWESOME). Still, true when it comes to the United States' isolation policies.

Also, this was a mix that had become buried that I constructed after John Prine's death.

It's a good mix though the songs are not all unified around the John Prine theme with peers or similar music or artists. But women in music is a unifying factor.

I love that I have Sergio Mendez's "Fool on the Hill" in this mix. I should build a whole mix around that song.

FOOL ON THE HILL seems an apt theme for the person who somehow has been elected and set our country on fire.

INAUGURATION COUNTDOWN

58 DAYS to inauguration

Though this mix does not start with Lucy Dacus or Phoebe Bridgers -- artists I have discovered because of my step-daughter -- the core of the mix focuses on music by them. The main theme and title comes from John Prine's "Angel From Montgomery" as sang by Bonnie Raitt and in the end of the mix Bonnie Raitt and Ruthie Foster.

I am proud of how this mix came together. There's glue in between the Dacus and Bridgers tracks. I had lots of African-American artists, but I moved those out for a future mix. The new Weller came out when I made this mix, so I added a couple from that effort. I "found" some via You Tube serendipitously. And I added new faves like Japanese Breakfast, Daft Punk, and Sevdaliza with other older faves like Sinead O'Connor and Lucius. I also bookended the whole thing with "Angel From Montgomery," which feels good.

The songs story is really not about fighting Covid-19 and the heroism and sacrifice of the healthcare workers on the front lines, women featured here.

We are all getting pandemic fatigue, but we must remain strong, support those in healthcare, and observe public health guidelines because "to believe in this living is just a hard way to go."

So, it was a good day to share this new Sevdaliza song that was released earlier this year.

Blogger has banned and reinstated the Shabrang post multiple times because of the picture Sevdaliza used for the album cover and I used for the blog topper of her looking like she had just been beaten.

She's released a new song, which I hope means a new album is imminent as it has been four years since Shabrang. She has released many singles in the last few years. This one, "Alibi," is just the most recent.

I forgot that I had made a Sevdaliza category.

Here's a reprint because it was Music Monday six years ago on this very day.

In 2018, I was still adding videos one by one as well as the video mix pod player. Those are still in the original post reprinted below.

However, I was not doing track lists then, so when videos get taken down there's no way to know what was in the mix. Several videos were taken down and altered this mix, and so I added more videos to bring the total to 26 tracks for the 26th of the month.

I tried to keep to songs that would have been out in 2018, and I think I did. The link to the mix and the track list is below, but the entire original post is farther down.

Given what's going on in Palestine, in Gaza, Yasmine Hamdan, though Lebanese, she is married to a Palestinian and uses the language in her songs, and so surely she has strong views on what Israel is doing.

Hi Mom,

So last week when Fergie got eviscerated in the press and online for rendition of the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game for 2018, which is the first track here and in the You Tube playlist.

I rather liked her performance, though not many people agree with me, even Fergie, who admitted it wasn't her best and what she was trying for didn't really come off well. I can see that, but I liked that tried something different. I support the different.

And so, I was inspired to make a mix for once with all women artists, though an emphasis on Fergie -- four of the tracks are either Fergie solos or feature her with the Black Eyed Peas.

I also wanted to feature woman of color, though not exclusively, so I went to some of my favorite artists, like Erykah Badu, MIA, Solange, and Daniela Andrade, but then as I built the list others came up as YouTube suggested them, such as Cat Power, which seemed to fit perfectly. Ayabambi, Nitty Scott, Macy Gray, and Sneaker Pimps were all suggested by YouTube and I am thankful for finding some new artists to follow.

I have posted some of these tracks before, such as Yasmine Hamdan's "Balad" and Badu's "Afro Blue" but I feel they fit this group.

I was also excited to find a new cut by Tracey Thorn as her new album debuts later this week. I also added new tracks by St. Vincent, Anne Marie, and the Kesha performance from the Grammy Awards to give this post some "kairos."

Also, it stood out to me when Tracey Thorn sang about missing her mom, Mom. That seems to fit the theme of the blog, even though I am not writing about you so much anymore, though I am still writing TO YOU.

I have been listenting to it a lot as I work, so I made the easy YOUTUBE playlist (link below), which does not require constant clicking as you would need to do to play from my blog.

Funny side note. I didn't plan it, but I ended up grabbing the Phantogram that my wife plays a lot. I think she played this Cat Power track quite a bit back in October when it came out.

Seemed right to end with Lorde, who will soon play a concert here in Portland.

In Sevdalizas video, however, the perverse spectator is brought to the center. Rather than scapegoating the act of oppressive sexualization onto animals (and “others” — note the background men in Langs film), Sevdaliza brings them forth and allows us to rest for a long time on their nervous, sweaty, uncomfortable and guilty spectatorship. Furthermore, the male gaze is stretched out through other hungry characters, as if to tell us that we are all guilty of oppressive consumptions (or what bell hooks might call “eating the other”) — or that we may all have internalized the male gaze. Just like that, Sevdaliza turns it around, and the humans are the animals consuming and sexualizing her — the animal insisting it is human.

Sevdaliza appears to be a satyr and an erotic dancer performing in a semi-abandoned large building with classical detailing in front of an audience sitting on a mezzanine. The audience consists of only men, who are clearly wealthy, being served food and receiving this seemingly private and exclusive performance. The time and place that this is occurring remains ambiguous, mostly because of the mysteriousness of Sevdaliza's semi-mythological character, who is dancing on dirt that has been plowed as in preparation for an animal race. Additionally, her outfit recalls that of Debra Paget in the 1959 film The Indian Tomb, a nod to old Hollywood nostalgia and popular roles women play catering to male sexual desire.^[33] The audience members sweat and watch cautiously, as if scared of her. Her video on YouTube is accompanied by the quote, 'the basic human need to be watched was once satisfied by god'. There is an official rendition of the song in Portuguese. The video for Human was directed by Emmanuel Adjei.

And what is that about? Why is Sevdaliza half horse? At first, I thought of it quite literally — the animalism was a play on Sevdaliza striving to be seen as human (literally the lyric of the song) — a simple play on the dehumanization of women (maybe particularly women of colour). But I recently attended a seminar and lecture with Quantum Physicist Karen Barad. My sister introduced me to Barads work years ago, but while attending the lecture a coin dropped — and finally I began to understand some of the links between posthumanist feminist philosophy, queer-theory and Sevdalizas horse legs.

It sounds way out — but it makes me think of Karen Barads text Transmaterialities from GLQ: a journal of lesbian and gay studies — particularly the following quote: “Monstrosity, like electrical jolts, cuts both ways. It can serve to demonize, dehumanize, and demoralize. It can also be a source of political agency. It can empower and radicalize.” Was Sevdaliza radically performing monstrosity?

Applying Barads uses of “both/and” — in which we are asked to consider the materiality of something that is “both” (two separate things) “and” (one whole/the same) at the same time — begs us to consider that the fixedness with which we define bodies (ie. what is Human) might not be the most useful way to think of materiality. One could ask — is Sevdaliza distinctly human and nonhuman but also simultaneously both? If so, Sevdalizas Human video offers a quite literal critique through a use of the posthuman/nonhuman altered body — in other words, her use of the nonhuman and exotified character only briefly dehumanizes and demonizes Sevdaliza, in order to ultimately dehumanize, demoralize and critique the audience, ultimately giving Sevdaliza the empowering radical agency to reflect humanity onto itself through her own (non/)human state.

The Calling isn’t a departure from ISON so much as a distillation in both sound and in genre. The two pejoratives for trip-hop, the coffeeshop and the bedroom, suggest shallow, half-hearted connections with other people, which was always strange for a genre that, at its best, is about extensive self-reflection. And The Calling certainly has that, occasionally to excess. There’s a fair amount of woo to get past, starting in interviews and peaking in “Human Nature” with a sotto voce spoken-word quotation of the guru Osho, whose more salacious teachings are the subject of Netflix’s cult doc “Wild Wild Country.” Once you do, though, the music is well worth it.

Sevdaliza’s voice evokes the best bits of the genre’s greats—Tracey Thorn’s richness, Nicola Hitchcock’s tremolo—while adding distinctive melisma evoking her Iranian roots. Mucky hones his sound further here. Like Arca, his productions often dwell on empty space, and just how far it can expand; “Soothsayer,” in particular, has moments that spool out slowly, very much like parts of Björk’s Arca-produced Vulnicura. The Calling takes the best part of ISON—the strings—and makes them even more abundant and central.

“There’s a woman, she’s every fantasy, and no reality in one,” sings Sevda Alizadeh, better known as Sevdaliza, in “Amandine Insensible.” The song is about one of the musician’s alter egos, a woman named Amandine, who is so lost in her fantasies that she doesn’t care about anything else around her. Just as she takes on several characters (Amandine, Marilyn Monroe, and Zilla—a woman experiencing loss—are a few in her professional realm), Sevdaliza’s personal background too is fragmented. Born in Tehran, the singer—whose ethnic background is Persian, Russian, and Azerbaijani—left Iran with her family to move to Rotterdam at a young age. She went on to play for the Dutch national basketball team in her teens before pursuing a master’s degree in communications. It wasn’t until after university that Sevdaliza honed her sound: a fusion of haunting vocals mixed in with sultry synths and pulsating beats. Through her melancholic lyrics, she investigates identity and transformation.

​Like Sevdaliza, Beatrix Ruf landed in the Netherlands as a foreigner. The German curator moved to Amsterdam from Zurich to become the director of the Stedelijk Museum in 2014, the city’s main institution for modern and contemporary art. Her dedication to art and sense for aesthetics have qualified her as one of the most admired museum heads in the world. In 2006, she curated the Tate Triennial, along with a survey of the German artist Isa Genzken, and her collaborators span from the established, like Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone, to the emerging, such as South African artist Zanele Muholi, who opened an exhibition at the Stedelijk in summer of 2017. In their home country this summer, Sevdaliza and Ruf conversed over their common creative ground, discussing the role of identity in art, racism, and migration.
