A Sense of Doubt blog post #1277 - شاهماران Şahmaran - QUEEN of Snakes - Musical Monday for 1808.20

Şahmaran - King of Snakes
A Sense of Doubt blog post #1277 - شاهماران Şahmaran - King of Snakes - Musical Monday for 1808.20

First things first.

One year ago today, August 20th, I started my journey west with my Dad and my two dogs as explained in HEY MOM #776 ON THE FERRY.

On the SS Badger - ferry ride - 1708.21
The ferry ride commenced the next day, so the 20th is when we left Kalamazoo. It was a Sunday and the day after the KUDL tournament.

Second thing second.

This mix came together in a strange way. It started with Sevdaliza's "Shahmaran," named for the Persian (modern Iran) "Shah" of snakes. As explained here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shahmaran

Shahmaran (Persianشاهماران Şahmaran‎, lit. 'Shah (king) of the Snakes'; KurdishŞamaran‎, TurkishŞahmeranTatarŞahmara[1] or Zilant, Зилант or Aq Yılan[2]ChuvashВĕреçĕленlit. 'Fire snake') or ਸੱਪ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਾਹ PunjabiSapa dē Shaha', is a mythical creature in IranAnatoliaIndia and Iraq. The name of Shahmaran comes from Persian words "Shah" and "Maran". Shah is the title for a king, primarily the leader of the Iranians and their land and "mar" means snake. In plural "Mar-an" means snakes. Shahmaran is known as the queen of the serpents. This story can be traced from the Middle East to India with different variations, one version is also found in the Arabian Night Tales as the story of Jemlia - the Sultan of Underground.[3]

BUT.... it's actually the QUEEN OF SNAKES

he Shahmaran is often depicted as a wise, intelligent woman, having female features above the waist and those of a serpent below. She is described as the queen of the snakes. When the Shahmaran dies, it is said that her spirit will pass to her daughter. There are different versions to the legend, as follows:
Once there existed a wise snake woman, Shahmaran, who loved a traveler named Tasmasp. He was in love with her. He listened to her wisdom and stories. But when he thought she had no more stories to tell, he decided to return to his country, however he took Shahmaran with him and hid her. When Tasmasp returned to his land, the king had become very ill. One of the king's advisers exclaimed that the only way to recover was to eat Shahmaran. They took people, one by one, into the hamam to see if snake scales would come up, and when Tasmsp went, he was forced to tell where Shahmaran was hiding. When they found her, she said, "whomsoever takes a bite from my snake scales will gain the secrets of the world, but whomever takes a bite of my head will die instantly." Tasmasp took a bite of the head and the evil helper took a bite of the scales, but the helper died, and Tasmasp was not affected at all. Shahmaran had helped her lover while simultaneously killing her enemy.[4][5]

Starting with Sevdaliza's song, I started to cobble together other songs as You Tube suggested them or songs I had hanging around from the last two mixes -- God Break Down the Door and Industrial Accident.

There's a second Sevdaliza track and others that fit like Dead Can Dance, Flesh, and Lastwrds. But then other influences introduced themselves, such as Liesel's friend Sarah who is visiting and turned me on to Frazey Ford, which pivoted the mix adding Emmylou with Knopfler (though there's a long band introduction in that video) and the cool Mumford/Costello cover of "Tom Joad."

Watching an episode of Castle Rock reminded me of how much I love "The Weight," and there's a version by ARETHA!! So, I used that to book end the mix and filled in with a few other things I had been listening to, like Steely Dan and Sade, and another You Tube suggestion that I wanted to log for further listening: London Grammar.

Oh yeah. The "Witches" strip dance??? I know. This is cheesy and sexually exploitative. BUT "Paint it Black" is a great song, and this is a production of the Ukrainian Dance Federation, which is so cool that I had to include it. Deets:

Choreography, idea, costumes design - Vitaliya Gubenko aka Nomi Dance Dance House KAMA Rise (Kharkov, Ukraine)
www.facebook.com/dancingkharkov/
Video maker - Vadim Sanzharevskyi

Camera - Vadim San & Денис Березовский Fb Music: Ciara - Paint it black I don't own this music. It's only used for our dance inspiration. Ukrainian Dance Federation

Maybe that stuff makes its inclusion a bit more legit and less sexist. Maybe.

That's it for today as I am off to NEW TECH PDX in Portland, which I will report on Thursday in the Throwback post.
