Satchel and Ellory sleeping in the car 1708.21 (2) |
It was about a year ago that I left my home in Michigan for the west coast with my two dogs -- Satchel and Ellory -- my Dad, my Subaru, and a U-Haul trailer.
I thought this trip would be one of the hardest things I had ever done, but it really wasn't. Not that it was a total breeze, but the problems ("adventures") were mostly non-dog related.
The dogs were great!!
I had stashed a bunch links in this blog entry, but then I never posted it. Though the GO PET FRIENDLY is a good site, I preferred using BRING FIDO to plan dog friendly locations, especially parks and trails.
Here's what I learned.
THE NEST is the most important thing. Create a nest for them in the backseat with plenty of pillows and blankets and comforters and sleeping bags.
See photo (left).
They loved the nest, they slept a lot, and they had ZERO accidents.
Leaving them alone may not work. This was the hard part for me. Dad and I wanted to go have dinner and not eat take out in the hotel. Mostly, we were able to leave them, but often this did not work. One motel called us to return because of excessive barking. One part of the issue was crating Ellory. When I did not crate her, she did not make a ruckus.
HOTELS: ALSO, it depends on the hotel. Inexpensive hotels are good for the pocket book but not good for the dogs. The sound proofing of higher quality hotels REALLY HELPS. See farther below, after my itinerary, for the last hotel where we did NOT stay followed by a picture of the hotel we found that was the nicest of the trip! The dogs will check out each hotel room AND GIVE THEIR RATING. If they don't like it, they let me know. Satchel disliked the place that called us to return to the room because of Ellory's barking, and Satchel basically refused to stay at the Top Hat Motel.
FREQUENT STOPS: I thought that this might be a problem, but it wasn't. In fact, I pushed the every two hours rule at times if they were sleeping and doing fine. But overall, we made 3-4 stops a day, sometimes more. Really it all depended on our total miles for the day. The two big days with almost 400 miles of driving each featured more stops.
ROUTINE: Dogs love routine, and my dogs are programmed. Regular schedules were maintained, which helped with trip anxiety, especially for my anxious beagle.
It was a great trip. I would definitely do it again if I ever need to do it again.
So, the next link is the collection of all my trip posts from last year in backwards order, followed by my itinerary with hotel costs and such for those in need. Thumbs down on the Super 8 in Biscmarck and the Top Hat in Ritzville, where we did not stay.
I close today's entry with photos.
Hey, if you hit on this blog because you're driving cross country with dogs, let me know in the comments!!

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
