A Sense of Doubt blog post #4215 - GRATITUDE - SoD Reprint from 2024

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4215 - GRATITUDE - SoD Reprint from 2024

Many people might think I overdo with commemorating my parents and their lives and that  I am wallowing in grief and over-focused on their deaths.

I would push back against this accusation. I have this blog for me more than for readers. Taking a week after the two year mark of my Dad's death feels right. I like looking at the old photos, the previous blog entries that I reprint.

And if I am "wallowing" in anything, it's gratitude. I have a great life. I am very thankful for my life and all the people who are and have been a part of it. My parents, surely, were a very important part of my life and in making it what it is.

I am celebrating my life, their lives, and in so doing I gain much needed perspective.

As I have written before, one does not "get over" grief. Instead one finds a way to absorb it into one's life, a way to live with it. I remind myself of that creed every day.

Thanks for tuning in.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3494 - TWO WEEKS LATER - Reprint of Hey Mom #217 and T-shirt #157 and #78 - GRATITUDE

It is not lost on me that though I originally had this post scheduled for yesterday, 9/10, posting it today on the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the WTC, Pentagon, etc.

I was not ready to write this post, and so I delayed.

I recently took a "character strengths" test, and GRATITUDE was my highest ranked character strength out of 24 such aspects of my personality.

I told the Big Guy, my Dad, about how grateful I am for everything in my life, most of which is due to him and my Mom.

I had thought of listing all those things for which I am grateful here, but maybe that's private.

Maybe all I need to write is how grateful I am. How deep my gratitude fills me.

I have regrets of things I have not done, opportunities I wish I had taken advantage of, but I am also pleased with my life, and I owe so much of that to my Dad. I told him so in his last hours.

We all should take the time to be mindful of gratitude and all things for which we are grateful each and every day.

I do.

This is blog is just one way that I show that gratitude.

I am still processing that two weeks ago I was holding Dad's hand and watching his breathing slow.

14 days. That's more sevens and fours (Mom died 7/4 and 7*4 is 28). And half of 28, the day Dad died.

14 days.

Seems longer.

Seems shorter.

But 62 years and 8 months. I am grateful for all of that time. So grateful.

BTW, I love the picture above that I believe my sister took as she is not in it. I am guessing it's late 1970s when I was in high school. I don't think it was from the early 1980s when I was in college. In one of the other photos, Lori looks young, maybe 8-9ish. Even 10. Could be 1980. I have all of Dad's little black books, so I could research it and maybe figure it out. But not today.

Thanks for tuning in.

“Personality is a seed that can only develop by slow stages through our life. There is no personality without definiteness, wholeness, and ripeness…. The achievement of personality means nothing less than the optimum development of the whole individual human being. It is impossible to foresee the endless variety of conditions that have to be fulfilled.… Personality is the supreme realization of the innate idiosyncrasy of a living being. Easter 1966

A Sense of Doubt blog post #2558 - REPRINT WEEK 08 - re: HEY MOM #217 - Gratitude

It's been a while since I featured a picture of myself and Mom up top, so there you go. Easter 1966. I am four years old. We're in Midland, living next to my grand parents and about to move to Traverse City. And my mother is still channeling Jackie Kennedy.

Hi there.

How are you?

Are you doing all right?

Please take care of yourself, okay?

Reprint week continues with a reminder about gratitude, which is one of my highest values.

I would not be whom I am and where I am if not for other people who love and support me.

My amazing wife alone deserves a great deal of this praise even though she does not like me to even mention her on my blog. But when I mention her in this context, it's more about me than it is about her. It's about how great she is at supporting ME.

So that.

But just for some extra value, here's where I originally wrote about gratitude:

T-shirt #157: Gull Lake

And an excerpt:

LAST WORD ON THE GRATITUDE THING: I got the idea for the gratitude prayer (meditation, list, incantation, catalogue, rumination, reflection, or whatever you want to call it) from a movie called The Secret. I am not quite promoting the movie as a "true" exposure of an actual science. In fact, many of the stories in the film are a bit fatuous. However, I like watching it. I showed it to a class (my second viewing) about a month ago, and the idea of the daily gratitude thing struck me. In the movie, one of the interviewees (I forget which one and it's not important) explained how he had a rock in his pocket. At night, he would set it on his dresser with the other contents of his pockets. The next morning, he would retrieve it and remember to list the things for which he was grateful as a daily routine, like a prayer. He had a visitor from South Africa and told the man about his rock and gratitude practice. The man called it a "gratitude rock." After returning to South Africa, he wrote his American friend and asked for some gratitude rocks to be sent to him because one of his children was very sick, and he did not have the money to seek medical care for the child. The interviewee balked at sending "gratitude rocks" because, after all, "they are just rocks," he said. But he found three nice rocks and sent them to his South African friend. Months later, the South African wrote back. The rocks worked! His son was healed and recovered. They paid for his medical treatment by selling a hundred gratitude rocks. People believed in the power of the gratitude rocks.

I found this story inspirational. I do not use a rock, but every day, I make my gratitude list. I send energy into the universe. I focus on the positive and try to limit or dismiss the negative.

I think it's working.

LOW POWER MODE: I sometimes put the blog in what I call LOW POWER MODE. If you see this note, the blog is operating like a sleeping computer, maintaining static memory, but making no new computations. If I am in low power mode, it's because I do not have time to do much that's inventive, original, or even substantive on the blog. This means I am posting straight shares, limited content posts, reprints, often something qualifying for the THAT ONE THING category and other easy to make posts to keep me daily. That's the deal. Thanks for reading.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #217 - Gratitude

Hi Mom, Here's some content from my T-shirts blog. I am still trying to catch up since I have fallen behind on my daily regimen.

I am very grateful for you, Mom, and for our family (see next two photos).

I think about our times together very often, Mom. These memories fill me with warmth and love and an ache that is never going to subside.

At least, I know that I told you how grateful I am for you. I know that I did not leave anything unsaid or finish our time together on hurtful or hateful words.

I am grateful to have lived with you for so long, to be able to be raised by you, and then in turn, to be able to help take care of you. I am grateful that you saw me get married and got to know my wife and kids and pets (Vespers and Satchel).

I am grateful for all you have given me because it's so much and I find new layers of it all the time.

FROM T-SHIRT #78

So, I am very grateful for Suzanne Vega and all that she has given me in my life, all that I have shared with her through music, what seems like deeply personal music, without knowing her at all, though feeling like I do know her, know her music.

So, each morning, I run the list of things for which I am grateful. I am not always listing musical artists, like Suzanne Vega, because I focus mostly on my family and community. Though from time to time, musical artists will drift into my consciousness, and I will thank the universe for them, infuse the positive energy of my love into the fabric of the cosmos, because, after all, we are all connected.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4210 - Letter to Dad #50: Pressure Washing with Dad in Honor of his Passing Two Years Ago

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4210 - Letter to Dad #50: Pressure Washing with Dad in Honor of his Passing Two Years Ago

Hi Big Guy,

It is fitting that on the day before the second year since you died, my letters to you feature hits fifty.
No more significance to this number other than it's a special number enroute to one hundred, so it is notable.

Also, BTW, I am publishing this and the next six posts  (seven in all) at 13:40 instead of 10:10. The time of your death, Dad.

Even more fitting is what I will do tomorrow on the second year since your death that I am going to pressure wash patio, drive ways, deck, and porch. So, in that spirit, I am reprinting here when we pressure washed together before staining the deck at St. Antoine in Kalamazoo a color that was not approved, so we had to re-do it!

Before that reprint, not much to report. Back to teaching creative writing, which I have not taught for five years, and of course the whole course is changed.

Making time for my own writing at a pretty solid clip, so I am proud of that.

Start my Practicum (not internship yet but essentially the same thing) on Monday.

Things are going well.

I miss you and love you, Dad.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #357 - Work days with the Big Guy

Hi Mom, This one's mostly pictures. There's been lots of work around here lately with the Big Guy, my Dad, you know, Robert "Bob" Tower, your husband.

In the photo above, I had to insist that Dad smiled. It's a good smile.

This photo gallery charts our power washing of the deck and then staining the deck.

Liesel does not like the stain color (see sample pick of the color swatch below). But the staining of the deck is more about preserving the wood than looks. We needed solid stain. She wanted grey. We miscommunicated.

AND we will need to power wash again later this summer or early in the fall. We skipped a section of the house because we were running out of time and energy.

As you know, Mom, Dad and I have always done these work days. They used to be in support of our home, ours together as a family. But now, mostly, they are in support of my home with Liesel and the kids.

Dad told me that  a year ago he would not have been able to do all this work. He's doing yoga, and it's really helped him.

Also, he was taking care of you, and in your last two years, it was not as easy for us to bring you along and stash you in front of a TV or for a nap on the a couch.

I know these pictures would be interesting to you, Mom; you would look at them all, nodding and smiling. But my other readers may not find much of interest here. Still, I like our work and the before-after progression of the deck staining. I have also added my Instagram/Twitter/Facebook posts and captions. "SO MUCH DIRT!!!"

These times with my Dad are precious. I would not trade them for anything in the world.

Satchel: "I want to come outside, please."
Me: "No, you are already covered with stain."

Satchel, thinking: "How could I get outside without his help."
Me: "Satchel, don't even think you're getting outside until the stain dries."

ALL DONE!! Four days later, the deck looks great, if you like cape grey as a color that is.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4199 - My Parents' 68th Wedding Anniversary

Lori's 12th birthday - 1981
A Sense of Doubt blog post #4199 - My Parents' 68th Wedding Anniversary

I went hunting for older pictures of my parents and came across the one above from Lori's birthday, and I liked it.

Then, I found this one below.

I took this picture, obviously, I cut off the top of Dad's head. My Mom was very pregnant here. Since we moved into this house just before she gave birth, it's obvious that it's not long before Lori was born.

I feel it's important to acknowledge my parents' wedding anniversary every year, even though they are both deceased.

Usually I make this a HEY MOM post, but this year I did not.

Below I have reprinted the previous anniversary posts.

Thanks for tuning in.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1252 (SoD #3833) - My Parents' 67th Wedding Anniversary

Hi Mom, It's your wedding anniversary again, and the first for which neither of you are alive.

Dad died last year in August 28th at 1:40 p.m. just a little under two weeks after your 66th wedding anniversary. Last year's post also reprints many wedding anniversary posts from past year's.

Posts like this are mainly for me, Mom, and I know you get that.

I just like looking at the pictures and thinking about what might have been.

Some may find it "unhealthy" to keep posting about a wedding anniversary that can now no longer be celebrated by those who were in the wedding.

But does that really matter?

With the date of Dad's death coming up and the one year anniversary, I am more focused on him and both parents than I have been in past years.

Referring to it as an "anniversary" seems like the wrong word, given that anniversaries are usually associated with celebrations and not acknowledgement of a sad event.

And perhaps there are always "WHAT IFs" with deaths. What if you had not contracted the bacterial meningitis, Mom? What if you did but we caught it earlier? What if Dad had not contracted cancer in his mouth? What if Dad had not comedown with Covid-19?

What if I had made it back to Michigan last year before Dad was unconscious?

But this post is about what was always a happy day for you and Dad, right Mom?

And after having to ask when you two got married almost every year, I have a system now. I was pretty sure I always remembered that it was 1958 but often had doubt.

Four years is easier to remember. Add four years to my age for the number of years of your marriage.

Technically, the marriage ended in 2015, when you died, Mom. But I know Dad kept acknowledging the wedding anniversary every year. I am not sure if he did last year as he was in hospice, though not yet in the nursing home area, still in his apartment, twelve days before he died.

He was off social media and email and the phone. Though I did speak to him a few times, when I had the nurses literally put the phone to his ear. I don't know if he was even aware last of your wedding anniversary on the 16th. I hope he was.

I know you get it, Mom. You get the grief because of how you grieved your mother since she died when you were 19 years old. You were sad when your dad died but not nearly as sad. I saw you cry about your mother for years and years, all the years.

I wish you were here so we could talk about it, though in the last fifteen years or your life, just bringing up your Mom was likely to make you cry.

There's no wrong way to grieve. There only right ways.

Posts like these are part of mine.

Thanks for tuning in.

Mom and dad 40th wedding anniversary 9808.16

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1247 (SoD #3468) - Everything in its Right Place - Parents' 66th Wedding Anniversary

Hi Mom,

I was thinking a couple of weeks ago how a thing I gained from both of you was the need to have everything "just so."

Everything in its right place.

Hey, isn't that a song?

COUNTDOWN!!!

So, I was unloading the dishwasher and cleaning up the kitchen to make the coffee, which is something I do every night, and I was putting all the things where they should be, and if I found something out of place, I moved it.

I got this tendency from you, Mom.

Then, I was getting the things out for bed time: my water and CBD gummy, dog treats, books I take upstairs every night (my Kindle and Tao te Ching), and I realized that this is just like both of you. This setting out things for bed time is EXACTLY what Dad did every night for 15 years of caring for you, Mom.

But often you, Mom, would set out all your things for your day the night before, just as I often do.

Probably lots of people share these compunctions and organizational systems, but they are dear to me because they have been gained from you, Mom, and from Dad.

And so, I dedicate this song and this post to you and Dad, Mom, on the date of your 66th wedding anniversary.

GRAMMAR NOTE:

In this case, "Parents" is a proper noun for MY parents, and so it conforms to the rule for proper nouns which is just an apostrophe after the "s" unlike a common noun.

However, it also fits the rule for a plural as My Parents are two people, and so the word is plural.

Much like the dogs' treats, this is my Parents' 66th wedding anniversary.

A poignant comment from the original video:

"We all try to control our little worlds.

We all come up with plans for our future, and we try to stay on track with those plans.

But life just happens, and it can blow everything we thought our life would be out of the water in a blink.

Nothing is ever really in its right place.

Yet, we never stop trying to put things 'right.'

We pick up pieces of our old, broken plans and we try to build new ones, over and over, totally at the mercy of our own chaotic little worlds."

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1181 (SoD 1641) - 61st Wedding Anniversary - Marjorie and Robert Tower

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1181 (SoD 1641) - 61st Wedding Anniversary - Marjorie and Robert Tower

Hi Mom,

Special Friday edition of HEY MOM. No Throwback yesterday, technically, but this is a Throwback, right?

Here's a collection of content from previous August 16th and my parents wedding anniversary.

I have to remember that their years married is +4 my age or just remember that they were married in 1958.

As I look back on my posts, I think I made an early error in the "days ago" tally, and so it may be off by one. I think the error occurred in the first month in which I just calculated days ago by subtracting four (the Fourth of July) from the current date. Since then, I have just kept track. However, I started the HEY MOM FEATURE two days after you died, Mom, so the current HEY MOM count while I was doing daily HEY MOMs should always be two under the days ago. Looking back through my archive (randomly chose #508), it appears that I corrected the discrepancy. Thus, I suspect that my days ago count is accurate.

Hey, guess what? There's a days ago calculator. My count is right on!

https://www.convertunits.com/dates/

Date difference from Jul 4, 2015 to Aug 16, 2019

The total number of days between Saturday, July 4th, 2015 and Friday, August 16th, 2019 is 1,504 days.
This is equal to 4 years, 1 month, and 12 days.
This does not include the end date, so it's accurate if you're measuring your age in days, or the total days between the start and end date. But if you want the duration of an event that includes both the starting date and the ending date, then it would actually be 1,505 days.
If you're counting workdays or weekends, there are 1,074 weekdays and 430 weekend days.
If you include the end date of Aug 16, 2019 which is a Friday, then there would be 1,075 weekdays and 430 weekend days including both the starting Saturday and the ending Friday.
1,504 days is equal to 214 weeks and 6 days.
The total time span from 2015-07-04 to 2019-08-16 is 36,096 hours.
This is equivalent to 2,165,760 minutes.
You can also convert 1,504 days to 129,945,600 seconds.

I can only imagine what your marriage would have been like had you lived Mom. I think you would have made it to 70 years. Hard to imagine as I creep up on just 10 years.

The 57th wedding anniversary came around just 43 days after your death, Mom.

Here's all of that post and then some of last year's, from 2018.

We all miss you, Mom.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #42 - wedding anniversary

Hi Mom, This is Dad's post on his Facebook wall today in honor of your wedding anniversary today (1958-2015).

I can think of nothing more fitting, eloquent, or beautiful to share today. So just this...

I know Marjorie likes this, too.

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.

Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1108 - Happy 60th Anniversary to My parents - Throwback Thursday 1808.16

Hi Mom,

Today would have been your Sixtieth wedding anniversary with the big guy, my Dad, the Robert.

I don't feel like a thoughtful catch-all Throwback conversation post today. I am also a day late.

There's tons of pictures here. Those tell many tales.

I wish you were still here with us, Mom. You would have loved celebrating a 60th anniversary.

This post celebrates life, mostly mine. I know you're happy for me, Mom. Thanks.

Reflect and connect.

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you, Mom.

I miss you so very much, Mom.

Talk to you soon, Mom.

NEW (written 1708.27 and 1907.04) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of your death, Mom. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. Dropped "Talk to you tomorrow, Mom" in the sign off on 1907.04. Should have done it sooner as this feature is no longer daily.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
