A Sense of Doubt blog post #2707 - Happy Birthday Satchel - Ten Years Young!
It's Satchel's tenth birthday today.
It's been an amazing ten years.
Though I want her to live forever, I will be ecstatic if we get another ten years with her.
It's a happy day, and I will celebrate her birthday with her all month; however, it's also sad because it reminds me of the life span of beagles and springer spaniels (as Satchel is a mix of both).
A Sense of Doubt blog post #2342 - Satchel's Ninth Birthday
Apparently, I did not post a Satchel birthday blog entry last year.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1189 - (SoD #1703) - Satchel's Birthday; Surgery Tomorrow
Today is the date of Satchel's birth for another month. Her annual birthday for another year old comes around each July, as the following reprint will share.
Today, she is seven years and three months old.
Given all that has happened since July, I am having a difficult time accepting that her yearly birth date was just three months ago.
Remember, I am in low power mode because life is overwhelming and stressful.
So, with that in mind, please enjoy this reprint from Satchel's birthday in July of this year (2019) as a way to keep up my daily content without much work.
I am so worried about her.
LOW POWER MODE: I sometimes put the blog in what I call LOW POWER MODE. If you see this note, the blog is operating like a sleeping computer, maintaining static memory, but making no new computations. If I am in low power mode, it's because I do not have time to do much that's inventive, original, or even substantive on the blog. This means I am posting straight shares, limited content posts, reprints, often something qualifying for the THAT ONE THING category and other easy to make posts to keep me daily. That's the deal. Thanks for reading.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #131 - Satchel does chickens
Hi Mom,
Time again to have a puppy on this blog.
Knowing Satchel as I do, this is a great picture of her as she is telling me: "Dad, it's time to do chickens."
"Doing chickens" means that she gets in to the side yard, which is currently closed to her. In the morning, we let the chickens out sometime between 8 and 10 a.m.
Satchel runs full tilt to the gate to the side yard and then sprints for the back fence, checking all her spots. She has not responsibility in the morning when we let the chickens out of the coop to roam, and she has more time to explore and sniff her spots if I have to change their water and/or food.
At night, we put the chickens away. Sometimes, we time it right, and the chickens are already in the hen house. But if they are still in the yard, Satchel gets to wrangle them, shooing them back to the coop.
Recently, some chickens did not wish to be shooed, hunkering down in bushes next to the fence far from the coop. There was a terrifying ordeal of many minutes attempting to herd the chickens. I feared that Satchel intended to grab one in her jaws and carry it like a bad puppy to the coop. In the end, I carried one chicken back.
Satchel is a very good puppy. She does not try to hurt the chickens, though if she gets into the side yard during the middle of the day, she will chase them back to the coop anyway.
One thing that makes her extra excited is that she gets a treat each time her returns from the side yard both in letting out the chickens and putting them back in the coop, which is partly why her is so excited. This is how we talk about her. We just use "her" for everything.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1620 - THAT ONE THING: Sunday at the river with the dogs
Sunday, today's date on this post, July 28th, we went for a drive and intended to take a hike, but we missed our turn, which is okay because we found Eagle Cliff and a nearby campground, a great place to spend some time.
In keeping with my THAT ONE THING, I am abandoning my original post for today, as I did not finish it, and just posting this.
It's been a great day.
After some time at Eagle Cliff campground and park, we drove back here and had some of the BEST BURGERS EVER. The dogs hung out with us on the deck of the restaurant. Very nice.
I need more days like this one.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
It's a happy day, and I will celebrate her birthday with her all month; however, it's also sad because it reminds me of the life span of beagles and springer spaniels (as Satchel is a mix of both).
Blog Vacation Two 2022 - Vacation II Post #143
I took a "Blog Vacation" in 2021 from August 31st to October 14th. I did not stop posting daily; I just put the blog in a low power rotation and mostly kept it off social media. Like that vacation, for this second blog vacation now in 2022, I am alternating between reprints, shares with little to no commentary, and THAT ONE THING, which is an image from the folder with a few thoughts scribbled along with it. I am alternating these three modes as long as the vacation lasts (not sure how long), pre-publishing the posts, and not always pushing them to social media.
Here's the collected Blog Vacation I from 2021:

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1705 - Satchel's surgery - second of 2019
Satchel has cruciate ligament repair surgery yesterday. It was her second surgery this year, the first in April to remove fatty masses.
It was all traumatic enough as we were worried about Satchel psychologically as she became needier and clingier after the surgery earlier this year, but two things added to the trauma significantly.
First, I left my smart phone at home, which I discovered when trying to look up an alternate contact phone number at the vet. As I was on my way to teach in Portland (it's about 7:45 and I teach at 8:30 and TRAFFIC), I had not time to go get it. This meant being without my phone for 5-6 hours. When I got to school, I borrowed a student's phone to text my wife. I arranged to stop off at the vet on the way home around noon.
Then, after running two errands and getting to the vet for the report on Satchel, my car did its mysterious not starting thing. Usually, if I wait a period of time, which in the past has been as little as twenty minutes and as much as four hours, the car starts. I have a variety of theories as to what's going on with it and why it fails to start (as it forgets how) and then manages to start (as if it now remembers). There's no pattern, no discernible cause, and the incidents are often months if not a full year apart. It has exhibited this four times since moving here: once on the way here in the mountains of Montana with NO phone service (zero), next almost a full year later after a dinner at a brewery in Portland when Chris and Lisi visited (so I had help). The third time came about five months later when Ivan was visiting for Thanksgiving, and then the fourth incident occurred earlier this year at Safeway and I managed to snag a ride home from my neighbor.
I have been lucky each time, but yesterday, I feared that this may be the time the car does not start and with Satchel needing to be picked up later, I couldn't risk. So I called Liesel, I called a tow truck, and then it started. I drove it to the repair shop and asked them to replace the starter because this is likely the cause, and if it's not the cause, the actually cause will be inexpensive but just hard to find and isolate. I am hopeful that the problem is solved.
Satchel was very groggy post-surgery and hates the cone collar. She did not eat after we got her home and by 10:30 was crying in pain because she can only take the meds with food. At this point, I am asleep, so my wife wakes me up, and somehow we get her to eat, take her meds, and sleep. We all sleep in the living room: Satchel in her crate, Liesel on the floor, and me on the couch. Ellory finally realized I was not coming back to bed and joined us, sleeping in a large chair that she likes.
Unwilling to repeat this camping out scenario, I made a bed for Satchel on the floor next to my bed, a safe spot for her, which she likes, and we all slept in the master bedroom as we usually do this night, hours from the publication time of this post, but hey, I am writing this on Sunday.
Satchel is ambulatory but taking it easy. She can hobble outside on her own and pee. I have not yet seen her poop but surely she will need to do so tomorrow (Sunday, which is really today in reality).
We're smothering her with love as you may imagine.
AFTER SURGERY

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1227 (SoD #2348) - Celebrating Satchel's Ninth birthday
So, for Satchel's birthday, we started our celebrations going to the PET STORE for treats and canned food. I think this was the first time I took BOTH OF THEM into a PET STORE. Oh my stars and garters. Grappling two curious and exuberant dogs with a cart in PETCO was a challenge, and I forgot to put a mask on. Even though I am vaccinated, to set a good example of what taking a public health crisis seriously looks like, AND to protect myself and others against the DELTA VARIANT, I will be wearing a mask from now on, maybe forever.
After PETCO, where they were given treats to munch by the cashier in addition to the ones I bought for later, including Satchel's birthday cookie, I had to stop at a grocery for some probiotic water.
Hi Mom, Satchel's ninth birthday was last week, July 17, 2021.
As per usual scheduling, I did very little to celebrate on the 17th because I typically work Saturdays (welcome to the life of an adjunct professor). So on the day itself, I showered her with the usual love and wished her a happy birthday a bunch of times.
We celebrated on Sunday the 18th and really the rest of the week because the cookie was SO MANY calories that I would not let her have it all at once. ELLORY got some, too.

Then we went to PARADISE POINT PARK for the first time since the pandemic!
It would be helpful if Google timeline allowed an easy list to all the times and dates that I visited the place.
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #976 - Comic Book News, Dog Walks, and Recovery - Throwback Thursday 1803.08
It was a good walk. I got a few pictures.
It was a great day, but I wish Satchel would stop getting older.

HER has to live forever.
(Using the wrong pronoun is part of our puppy speak around here.)
Good talk, Mom.
More next time.

Reflect and connect.
Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you, Mom.
I miss you so very much, Mom.
Talk to you soon, Mom.

NEW (written 1708.27 and 1907.04) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of your death, Mom. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. Dropped "Talk to you tomorrow, Mom" in the sign off on 1907.04. Should have done it sooner as this feature is no longer daily.
