The Daily Bowie #43 - "Modern Love"
From the second I slipped the LP of the new David Bowie album, Let's Dance, on my turntable in 1983, "Modern Love" captured my affection with its boogie woogie and riffy guitars. All derived from Little Richard, according to Bowie, The song's danceable framework and its lyrical religious content. And yet, the song's first message was a new motto for me at that time.
"I know when to go out
And when to stay in
Get things done"
I was halfway through my undergraduate college career (though only three years into my initial ten years of college studies from 1980-1990), and I was getting ready to be committed. I wanted to "get things done." I was directing plays, writing short stories, making films, helping run a radio station, and trying to fit studies around that. But I was also heartsick because shortly after the album's release, I lost a relationship that meant a great deal to me, and so, at that time, I did NOT believe in "Modern Love" as the song suggests:

Walks on by (modern love)
Gets me to the church on time (church on time)
Terrifies me (church on time)
Makes me party (church on time)
Puts my trust in god and man (God and man)
No confessions (God and man)
No religion (God and man)
Don't believe in modern love"
But I had not given up, so I joined Bowie with "But I try, I try."
I was trying and I started to succeed.
