The Daily Bowie #51 - "Crystal Japan"

The Daily Bowie #51 - "Crystal Japan"

Originally, this was going to be TDB#50, but I bumped it for "Starman."

I have Tamar Cooney to thank for first playing this track for me after buying it on her trip to England, which she returned from shortly before I met her. She had all kinds of goodies, and I owe her a tremendous debt for introducing me to Japan and David Sylvian and the Jam. But we were aligned in our love for David Bowie and she played for me the single -- released in March of 1980 in Japan -- of "Crystal Japan" and its b-side "Alabama Song," both left-overs that Bowie chose not to include on SCARY MONSTERS and SUPER CREEPS. Originally, "Crystal Japan" was to conclude that album, but Bowie chanegd his mind and went with what is for me a top five favorite: "It's No Game pt. II."

What I did not know is that "Crystal Japan" was used for a television advertisement for Crystal Jun Rock sake in 1979, though Bowie claimed he had not written the track for this purpose.

It's an instrumental track and one of my all time favorite Bowie tracks and instrumentals by anyone.

I am not sure if I have posted the Golden Years timeline site here before. But here's the 1980 page featuring release date for "Crystal Japan."
