Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #35 - Abbott's Magic Get Together, part three

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #35 - Abbott's Magic Get Together, part three

Hi Mom. Today is my sister Lori's birthday, which is our first family holiday without you. In commemoration of this day, I am not doing anything special. My sister celebrated with Dad yesterday, but I was at a wedding (more on this tomorrow). I was sorry to miss Lori's celebration, but I did drop off a card at the condo in Richland while they were having dinner in Plainwell.

I could feel you there with me, smiling approvingly at my note and my gift.

The above picture is from the start of Shin Lim's lecture on the day of the Abbott's close up show with the camera set up.

I want to show you some magic. I have not yet told you all about get together but that will have to wait for a future post or maybe I skip it because I feel you were with me anyway.

The magician in the first video is the one about to perform in my picture in the header. He fooled Penn and Teller. I think you would have liked him, Mom. His name is Shin Lim, and he performs to music.

For my readers, this is not a totally gratuitous blog entry. I often showed you videos on my laptop or tablet, right Mom? So easy to stream video in the last few years. No reason not to show magic this way.

For my second video, I wanted to share "Heart Strings," which was this great effect by Peter Samelson. Truly touching and emotionally rich. But he does not offer a video of the actual effect just a promo to buy it. Some other magician has a version of it, but his vocal quality is not anywhere near as good as Samelson's. So instead I share his card effect with patter based on the film The Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I like Morgan, the Escapist because I love the idea of a woman who is an escape artist. There are so few women in magic let alone ones who do escapes. Her performance was excellent but there are no good videos. So instead, for the third and last video, I am sharing Brian Miller because he reminds me SO MUCH of my friend Ryan Walters. It's uncanny.

So, hey Mom, let's watch these.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers by Peter Samelson

Published on Mar 18, 2014
"When Peter performs Invasion of the Body Snatchers, I always get goosebumps! No other "Packet Trick" in the entire world of magic has done that. And I've seen a lot of packet tricks in the world of magic. This is the perfect piece of Close-up Magic Theatre!"
- Bill Abbott

Invasion of the Bodysnatchers was the first published in Peter Samelson's book Theatrical Close-up. Using Peter Kane's timeless Wild Card packet card trick as a launching pad, Peter married it with a presentation based on the cult classic SF film Invasion of the Body Snatchers circa 1956 and created a veritable classic of close-up magic theatre.
