Women of Marvel Peruses the Pages of Marvel's Horror Comics
Savvy spirits from Marvel's publishing department join the frightening fun!
BY JAMIE FREVELE
It's the most terrifying time of the year, and Women of Marvel knows that horror fans are looking for something to read! On the latest episode, Ellie Pyle welcomes Marvel associate editor Sarah Brunstad and assistant editor Lauren Amaro to discuss some of the scariest Marvel Comics of all time -- including some recent offerings that are available to read today!
Here's some of their conversation:
Amaro: "It’s so interesting to see our fears examined and externalized, and made both familiar and different so you can sort of come at it in a new way. And I think your understanding of it, and even your reaction to it, changes and shifts, and you get to, again, be scared without actually having to be in that situation. And there’s something cathartic about that.”
Brunstad: “I go through a stage every October because Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I try to soak up as much as I can. And I love the traditional feeling of why we do it around that time of year—that we’re losing light, we’re going into a time of darkness and interiority, and so it makes sense to indulge those kind of darker urges.”
You can download the full audio episode below, and keep scrolling to find a Marvel Halloween Reading Guide featuring the titles discussed on the show!

Spoke to the very rad @CCHELSEAWWOLFE about embodying Wonder Woman for DC's Sonic Metalverse, her picks for the "Justice League of Metal," and how much she loves the Witcher soundtrack. https://t.co/cKyA05hseN pic.twitter.com/SasbMrIKrG

Can anyone recommend a website for huge original paintings? Our place has so much comic art we want to have something a little different here. After something quite magical for this wall. Love this, but it's too small. But something along these lines... pic.twitter.com/nxbth28l92

Hey @PaulTobin, remember our Elsa Lancaster discussion?! I got another one for you - "Bell, Book and Candle" with Kim Novak, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Lemmon, a stellar Ernie Kovacs and ... Elsa! And it's a Christmas movie - sort of, to boot. Regardless, you got to watch it! pic.twitter.com/Bie1raQTOQ

Former Marvel EIC Jim Shooter gives an interesting account of how the Claremont/Byrne tension continued to impact Marvel’s publishing line even after the two creators split up, describing an ongoing and somewhat petty rivalry between the two. 1/6 #xmen pic.twitter.com/ZxOp7Ho1hK

I just finished COFFIN BOUND—I absolutely adore it, start to finish. It crackles with brilliance, with rotting guts. Magnificently written and breathtakingly visualized. A poignant, arresting ode to the poetics of gradual but nonetheless total annihilation. @adityab @TinyMaster pic.twitter.com/9Vy6UF2sA9

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
