A Sense of Doubt blog post #2407 - "Everybody Knows" - Mix for the start of FALL QUARTER - version #004 - MUSICAL MONDAY FOR 2109.20

The Blog Vacation is OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

With this post, I am back to daily blogging intentionally, not on low power mode, and pushing posts to social media.

Because of the success of the blog vacation, I may take another one later this year when school gets busy and when my wife and I are contemplating a trip to Europe. So, possibly, the entire month of DECEMBER. For the next blog vacation, I may not rotate reprints, shares, and THAT ONE THING. I may do all THAT ONE THING in LOW POWER MODE.

Today is both reprint and new content.

I am reprinting the last version of the "Everybody Knows" mix and adding a new mix, a volume four, to the collection.

So, all four mixes are here. The first version from the era of CDs, long before the blog existed, before even iPods existed. The second version from 2016, the third from 2019, and now the newest version from 2021.

I made the 2016 version while still teaching in Michigan as I did with the original version, which probably was first collected on a CASSETTE TAPE as it pre-dates even CD burners as technology.

The third version was created when I started teaching at Concordia University, so happy was I to be in a K-College like environment... no wait, I started at Concordia in Fall of 2018. So that was a mix for my second Fall semester at Concordia, but still, happy to be there.

Now, equally happy am I to be Lower Columbia College and to mark the start of my FOURTH year there.

SCHOOL STARTS TODAY.

Welcome to Fall Quarter at Lower Columbia College!!

Published on September 20th, 2021 , but my first class is on the 21st in the year '21, so 21 songs for two different instances of 21.

First time back in the live class room on campus in a year and a half or 18 months!

New songs from my life in quarantine. Recent listens and some oldies.

I like this mix. It has a good collection of songs with many that were staples in the pandemic (Saint Etienne), not that we're out of the pandemic. And others that are either recent listens, favorite oldies, or new to me oldies (The March Violets).

In addition to "Everybody Knows" that must lead the mix, there are two songs from the previous version: the AWESOME Sesame Street mash up of "The Cross Roads" by Bone Thugs 'n Harmony and "Lazy Eye" by Silversun Pickups.

Albums by both Paul Weller, CHVRCHES, and Japanese Breakfast cam out this year and are featured as is music my wife has brought to my life, such as "Parade" by the Antlers, She Keeps Bees, the Shins, and Silversun Pickups.

I feature Marvin Gaye whose greatest album, and what now Rolling Stone  magazine considers the greatest album ever, celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Lately, I have been HAUNTED by "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones. I was excited to discover the Electric Prunes cover as well as a video for a song that was unavailable not that long ago: "He's Heading Back Into Town" by Don's Mobile Barbers.

I think the end of the mix really ramps up nicely from the Pomplamoose cover and mash up to NIN with Gary Numan live and then "Zombie," which is a song I play in class when I read the new Margaret Atwood poem of the same name.

ENJOY!

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1651 - Everybody Knows 2019 - Musical Monday for starting school - 1908.26

Greetings and welcome.

Today marks the start of Concordia University's Fall 2019 semester, and I am teaching two classes of Writing 121, which is the introduction composition course for first year students.

As such, I have a new mix.

Beyond today, this mix will serve to be opening day and course theme music for all my teaching at all of my schools, such as Lower Columbia College in Longview, Washington.

"Everybody Knows" by Leonard Cohen has been my theme song, my first day song, my anthem for teaching for a very, very long time. Probably since Pump Up The Volume came out in 1990.

I had a previous EVERYBODY KNOWS v.2 mix (video pod player below), but apparently I never did a blog entry for it. Here's the track list:

[1] Everybody knows - Leonard Cohen
[2] Closer to Fine - Indigo Girls
[3] Lost In The SuperMarket - The Clash
[4] Do It Right - Anne-Marie
[5] It's No Game Part 2 - David Bowie
[6] Born To Die - Lana Del Rey
[7] More Than Rain - Tom Waits
[8] Nobody Speak - DJ Shadow feat. Run The Jewels
[9] Woman (feat. Lana Del Rey) - Cat Power
[10] We The People.... - A Tribe Called Quest
[11] Hands Up To The Ceiling - Tracey Thorn
[12] Circle Game - Live 1974 - Joni Mitchell
[13] Window Seat - Erykah Badu
[14] Kiss of Life (Lovers Live) - Sade
[15] Hurricane - MS MR
[16] Lazy Eye - Silversun Pickups
[17] K-Hole - CocoRosie
[18] Time - Pink Floyd
[19] Your Next Bold Move - Ani DiFranco
- 11/11/2016 - Paste Studios, New York, NY, Paste Magazine

I decided the make a new mix for 2019, which has a heavy rotation of songs that my wife has brought to my life and for which I give her credit.

Following, the previous mix, a reprinted previous post with just the song "Everybody Knows",  then the new mix, and then, lastly, a ton of images and pictures, some by me, most by others. These are just here to look at and ponder. No explanation. But I can scroll through them if I display this blog entry in class, so that's a bonus win.

Here we go.

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year.

THE PREVIOUS MIX:  (again)

"Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
That's how it goes
Everybody knows"

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #440 - 'Everybody Knows" - Musical Monday for 1609.19

Hi Mom,

Just one song for today's Musical Monday, which is being posted on Friday 1609.23.

I have fallen several days behind due to an enormous load of grading, including a larger than normal set of final grades due Thursday morning AND falling behind by not completing last week's work, especially due to being "ill" on Sunday.

I first heard of this Leonard Cohen song, "Everybody Knows," in the Allan Moyle film Pump Up The Volume, featured in the two visuals on this page, a film from 1990 starring Christian Slater and Samantha Mathis.

I became entranced by the song and started playing it in my classes first thing every semester, adopting it as a theme song much in the way it was a theme song for the character Hard Harry's pirate radio show in the film.

More in subsequent posts as I catch up, Mom.

But here's the song. If you don't know it, give it a listen.

Reflect and connect.
Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.
I miss you so very much, Mom.
Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

NOTE on time: When I post late, I had been posting at 7:10 a.m. because Google is on Pacific Time, and so this is really 10:10 EDT. However, it still shows up on the blog in Pacific time. So, I am going to start posting at 10:10 a.m. Pacific time, intending this to be 10:10 Eastern time. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. But I am not going back and changing all the 7:10 a.m. times. But I will run this note for a while. Mom, you know that I am posting at 10:10 a.m. often because this is the time of your death.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
