Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #592 - Mark Cuban, Trump, and Intelligence
Hi Mom, One of the things I love about doing this blog series, and why I changed my mind about stopping at 365 entries in this series, is that I can act on something recent if it catches my attention.
Usually, I don't have time to generate too much in the way of original content in responding to current news, so mostly I re-post. But I often can pen some original content as a preface to the re-post, which is what I am doing here.
So, it's no surprise to people who know me that I look at sports news in the morning. We're in the NBA all star game, and so my review of the sites I check (Yahoo, ESPN, mainly) was brief. I even turned off Sportscenter before it was over as there's not much to report.
But this news item caught my eye. Mark Cuban "apparently" took a jab at Trump with his jerseys for his celebrity team at last night's NBA all-star game festivities. "46" would be for the 46th president for whomever follows Trump (unless it is Trump - Spock save us!).
In the news item, which I re-post below, it is reported that Trump claimed via Twitter that MARK CUBAN IS NOT SMART ENOUGH TO BE PRESIDENT.
Now, this should not surprise me. Trump has skin that's thinner than rice paper. And, naturally, if you're not smart (like Trump) and many, many, MANY people are calling you a moron every day (and that's one of the nice things they say), then you will deflect because what else are you going to do? Stamp your feet and wail loudly that you are smart in the classic toddler temper tantrum? Well, that's sort of what he's doing, right?
I have long been a fan of Mark Cuban. I like how he's fiery and passionate. He's an individual. He stands up for what he believes. He's a very successful business person. I like how he has been an out spoken critic as an NBA owner. He's made good business deals, despite allegations that he was involved with insider trading, which appear to not be true.
And clearly, he's VERY SMART. Certainly, he's smarter than Donald Trump.
Trump claimed that Cuban "backed him," which is not true and has never been true.
From the WIKI:
In November 2012, in response to Donald Trump offering President Barack Obama $5 million to a charity of President Obama's choosing if he released passport applications and college transcripts to the public, Cuban offered Trump $1 million to a charity of Trump's choosing if Trump shaved his head.[129]
Uh, yeah....
Also, finding out that Cuban is a big fan of Ayn Rand and The Fountainhead, which is my father's favorite book, made me an even greater fan of Cuban, despite the fire Rand has often taken for how conservatives have associated with her philosophy (though really this connection has helped conservatives not fueled blind dogma).
This part of the article nailed it best for me:
Among Cuban's tweets, he wrote, "Trumps biggest issues are: No self-awareness, no situational awareness, can't admit mistakes, no leadership skills, can't stay focused," and "No management skills, doesn't read, doesn't use tech and makes no effort to learn, only consumes analog media."
Cuban also tweeted about Trump, "People are fungible to him. He doesn't care who stays or goes."
Yeah.
That sums up Trump quite well.
Thank you Mark Cuban.
And since I have not done so already, I followed him on Twitter, here: https://twitter.com/mcuban

Mark Cuban takes apparent jab at Donald Trump with No. 46 jersey
NEW ORLEANS -- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban wore a No. 46 jersey in Friday night's NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, an apparent response to President Donald Trump's recent tweet that Cuban is "not smart enough to run for president."
A source told ESPN before the celebrity game that Cuban's jersey number, which represents the number of the next U.S. president, was likely in response to Trump, the 45th president of the United States.
Cuban, with tongue in cheek, initially insisted that his favorite number, 23, was taken and that "23 times 2 is 46." No one on the West celebrity squad wore No. 23, however.
He later said with a smile that the number choice was "to tweak the s--- out of everybody."
"It was just to f--- with everybody, because that is what I do," he said. "You've got to have fun with it. You can't take it too seriously. So we'll see."
Cuban said he'd hinted to people earlier in the day to keep an eye on his jersey number choice.
"Yeah, yeah, watch the jersey number, not my game," said Cuban, who finished scoreless with one rebound and a steal in 17 minutes as the West lost 88-59 to the East. "Yeah, it was fun. You've got to have some fun with all of this. You can't take yourself too seriously. Some people do. I don't."
Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry, who played on the East celebrity squad, said he knew why Cuban chose to wear No. 46.
"I think Mark did it [as], you know, it's a statement," he said.
Trump posted a tweet about Cuban on Feb. 12, writing: "I know Mark Cuban well. He backed me big-time but I wasn't interested in taking all of his calls. He's not smart enough to run for president!"
Cuban, who was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton during the presidential election, has frequently been critical of Trump, particularly on Twitter. Earlier Friday, Cuban posted a series of six tweets in which he slammed Trump's policies and character.
Cuban joins Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, Warriors coach Steve Kerr and Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy among those in the NBA who have been critical of Trump before and after the election.
Lasry said he thinks Cuban would have a shot if he opted to run for president, "just like anybody's got a shot."
Cuban, though, said his jersey selection Friday wasn't meant as a hint of his future plans, saying he "doubts" that he has a future in politics."
He then added: "But you never say never."
