A Sense of Doubt blog post #2630 - Neal Adams RIP
I was all set to do THAT ONE THING today, and then the news of one of the greatest comic book artists of all time dying pre-empted my plans.
I got to meet Neal at his Continuity Studios in 1985 after randomly meeting one of his artists -- Arlen Schumer -- in a cafΓ©, but somehow he learned that I loved comics. Maybe I was reading comics? I don't remember.
I have spoken to Mr. Adams at conventions multiple times since, and I am inexplicably friends with Schumer on social media.
Though 80 years old, Neal Adams was taken from us too soon.

RIP Neal Adams: legendary comic artist and champion of creator rights passes away at 80
Leaves behind an extraordinary legacy
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, legendary comic artist Neal Adams has passed away at age 80. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Marilyn; sons Josh, Jason, and Joel; daughters Kris and Zeea; grandchildren Kelly, Kortney, Jade, Sebastian, Jane and Jaelyn; and great-grandson Maximus.
Adams first came to prominence in comics in the ’60s and ’70s with his photorealistic style of art in comics that sent a jolt through the industry. Together with writer Denny O’Neil, who also sadly passed away two years ago, Adams was instrumental in revitalizing the character Batman from the dayglo pop of the Batman TV show into the Dark Knight we know today. Their take on Batman can be felt in iterations that have come since, from Frank Miller to Christopher Nolan.
Among the new villains Adams introduced to Batman’s already impressive rogues gallery were Man-Bat and Ra’s al Ghul along with his daughter Talia al Ghul. Ra’s al Ghul’s duel to the death with Batman in the desert with sabers as depicted in Batman #244 easily ranks up there as classic comic book battles for the character. In fact, it was brought to life in animation in the episode “The Demon’s Quest” in the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series.
Another high point for Adams in his collaboration with O’Neill was their Green Lantern/Green Arrow stories in the ’70s. These stories broke away from the mold of entertaining good vs evil yarns to tell stories with serious themes. Quaint as they seem now, stories about drug abuse and racism were new to comics then, and had a powerful influence on those who came after.
Their run together also introduced the first black Green Lantern, John Stewart, a character who has since gained immense prominence in media outside of comics most notably the Justice League animated series.
Though he was best known for his revolutionary work at DC Comics, Adams was no stranger to Marvel having worked on the X-Men and Avengers titles in the ’60s. One of his last projects as an interior artist was for the Fantastic Four: Antithesis miniseries with writer Mark Waid.
More important than his work as an illustrator, Adams was an ardent champion of creators rights. In fact, his vocal efforts in the ’70s were instrumental in Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster receiving decades-overdue credit and some financial remuneration from DC.
Social media is overflowing with tributes to Neal Adams, but this emotional Facebook post from his son Josh Adams is perhaps the most fitting:

Plus America Chavez, Melissa McBride, and more!
The comic book industry lost another giant with the passing of Neal Adams. Adams, who died this week at the age of 80, was an iconic artist for both DC and Marvel comics throughout the 1960s and 1970s, drawing the likes of Batman, Superman, the Avengers and the X-Men. Adams was also a major creative force behind the Green Lantern/Green Arrow series of the early 1970s, which addressed real life issues like racism and drug addiction. He co-created the characters Ra’s al Ghul, Man-Bat, and John Stewart (the first Black Green Lantern) for DC Comics and Mockingbird for Marvel.
Many comics creators and fans took to social media to remember Adams and reflect on his legacy:
Heartbroken to hear about a Giant of Comics leaving us today: NEAL ADAMS.

Very few artists have been so influential in redefining superhero comics, & very few have created very iconic comic covers: Neal did all that & much more. Loved his horror work too, near & dear to my heart. pic.twitter.com/CvqffOoy5i
Neil Adams, a towering giant in the world of illustration, comics, and creator rights has passed. He was one of my heroes, I met him, I thanked him, got to know him—and he was truly smart and kind. He drew as well as anyone ever has, and he fought for us. I’m going to miss him. pic.twitter.com/PfTQjgUL3V

The modern comic landscape would not be what it is today without the incomparable work of Neal Adams. Neal portrayed heroes as both super and human in equal measure. We couldn’t really afford comics when I was a kid, so I read the hell out of the few I had. I had Batman comics by Neal Adams that were falling apart, and were about the coolest things I’d ever seen.
