A Sense of Doubt blog post #2757 - Writer's Retreat Day Six: Two Hours Walking the Beach
Today I walked the Eureka Waterfront Trail.
Here's what happened; it's funny.
I walked the trail SOUTH (this is important: SOUTH) nfor a couple of miles, not sure the distance, then there was this old railroad bridge across a water inlet, and past that there was open space that looked like it went down to a beach on the ocean. So I walked that way. Sure enough, ocean.
I can't get a map location for where I was but I think I could see out into the ocean because I was past Samoa Island and just north of Humboldt Bay. So here's what I was thinking. I walk back NORTH on the beach and then cut back to the trail at some point.
But there's a problem.
Look at the map.
I parked at Shamus T Bones and walked south on the trail, which is that little line near the shore.
Then, see the bottom of the map above? I walked off trail onto an old railroad track that was clearly not used anymore.
See this extension of the map above, below:
I walked to where the inlet turned back to the east toward the highway. I walked across an old bridge with the train tracks.
Then I walked west to the shore and started back north.
Now look.
What's between me and then trail?
A huge water inlet.
I get nearly to Shamus T Bones (or within sight of its roof) via the beach when I figure out that there's no way back to the trail other than going all the way back and retracing my steps and literally my tracks are in the sand, so that was easy enough to do.
I was walking on the strip of land running north-south parallel to the trail.
So two hour hike, which was fine. I need the exercise and felt so great afterwards that I may do it again tomorrow, though I might not walk as far on the beach as I did today. :-)

I walked almost to the end of that strip of land.
After my extended hike, I tried to go a couple of places to write but things were closing early for Labor Day. But I drove past this old drive-in and so I had a great lunch and satisfied my chili dog craving, though one are ever as good as the Kalamazoo Root Beer Stand.
Great food though. GREAT!

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
