In fact, this issue is surely waiting for me at the comic book store. I need to get there.

So, a quick share because I am behind on posting.

Wonder Woman's 3-Word Catchphrase Gets a New Character-Defining Meaning

March 01. 2024

  •  Wonder Woman's new catchphrase, " No thank you ," embodies her core values of hope, resilience, and refusal to surrender.
  •  Each time Diana utters this phrase in the face of adversity, she reaffirms her commitment to persevere and claim victory.
  •  Tom King's clever addition of this catchphrase authentically encapsulates Wonder Woman's essence and resolve.

WARNING: Potential Spoilers for Wonder Woman #6!

Batman and Superman are renowned for their enduring catchphrases–the Dark Knight's concise yet iconic "I'm Batman," and the Man of Steel's "This looks like a job for Superman"–and now the time has finally come for Wonder Woman to join them with a catchphrase of her own. However, her catchphrase is more than just a string of catchy words; it encapsulates the essence of her character.

Tom King and Daniel Sampere’s Wonder Woman run has repeatedly featured Diana uttering the phrase, "No thank you." Following the climax of issue six, it's evident that these three words have transcended mere repetition and have evolved into a catchphrase for the Amazon Princess.

In nearly every issue, Diana employs this phrase, often in moments of intense conflict. Initially, it may have seemed that these words held little depth beyond their surface defiance. However, after the events of issue six, it becomes apparent that "No thank you" also embodies a core aspect of Diana’s character—hope.

Wonder Woman’s Character Is Defined by Her Hope and Will to Persevere

In Wonder Woman #6, Diana confronts a slew of adversaries from her rogue gallery, including Doctor Psycho, Silver Swan, and Giganta. However, the pinnacle of the battle arises when she squares off against Grail, Darkseid’s half-Amazon, half-god daughter. With Wonder Woman broken, bloody, beaten, and on her knees, Grail tells her to accept that she has been defeated “and die,” before delivering what should have been a death blow. However, in a resolute defiance, Wonder Woman rises once more, defiantly proclaiming, "No thank you!" before delivering a decisive blow that incapacitates Grail, bringing their clash to an end.

Diana's steadfast "No thank you," echoed as she rises from certain defeat to claim victory, embodies the essence of her character. It symbolizes her refusal to surrender, her resilience in adversity, and her enduring hope. Each time she utters this catchphrase in the face of challenges, Wonder Woman reaffirms her commitment to persevere. "No thank you" represents the intertwined values of hope and resilience, defining Diana herself. Thus, Tom King has ingeniously bestowed upon Wonder Woman a catchphrase that authentically encapsulates her essence and resolve.

Will Wonder Woman's "No Thank You" Catchphrase Live Beyond Tom King's Run?

Batman and Superman's iconic catchphrases have endured for decades, resonating across various media platforms. Therefore, it will be intriguing to see whether King's "no thank you" catchphrase will endure beyond his tenure and become intrinsic to Diana's character. Given the profound depth and aptness of the catchphrase for Wonder Woman, it seems plausible that future writers may adopt and integrate it into her narrative. However, with King's Wonder Woman run ongoing, there are undoubtedly numerous "no thank yous" yet to unfold.
