A Sense of Doubt blog post #4262 - Women and Gender in Comics - Comic Book Sunday for October 18, 2026

A Sense of Doubt blog post #4262 - Women and Gender in Comics - Comic Book Sunday for October 18, 2026

It's Comic Book Sunday, and I am still delaying a post that has been in the works for months.

But the Internet ALWAYS provides.

This is a great collection of links to articles on women, gender, and comics, and we start with Valkyrie's original statement to Namor upon her debut about being equal to men.

Thanks for tuning in.

https://girlsreadcomics.wordpress.com/2011/03/05/memorable-marvel-moment-valkyrie-does-not-hate-men/

Memorable Marvel Moment: Valkyrie does not hate men

Most of the time, feminism is a dirty word. It brings up connotations of women hating men, women fighting against the patriarchy, men being beat down and belittled to make women feel better — and these are all wrong. Like any movement, there are extremists, there are people with different opinions, there are people who don’t fully understand what it is. In the end feminism is about what you make it as a woman (or a man).

In one sentence, Valkyrie sums up everything I believe feminism to be. We’re not trying to take away your power, we’re not trying to emasculate you, we don’t hate you and we’re not trying to be better than you. We just want to be thought of as good as men. We want to be equals.

Valkyrie is introduced in Defenders #4 as a woman incredibly proud of who she is and what she stands for. She’s often written as over the top, but eventually Defenders strikes a great balance between Val as a character and Val as a feminist icon. This is the moment where, despite the sometimes omg-so-feminist writing, we get a glimpse of something real, something that strikes my heart every time I read it.

https://www.ign.com/articles/2017/06/06/valkyrie-explained-who-is-the-thor-ragnarok-character

The Basics

Valkyrie is in fact Brunnhilde, a Norse warrior goddess chosen by Odin to lead the Valkyrior or “Choosers of the Slain” (there’s also a whole bunch of back story about her and Siegfried from the Volsunga Saga, but honestly, if you want that kind of detail, go read a book on Norse mythology). Ferrying the honored dead from Earth and Asgard to Valhalla, Valkyrie was angered when Earth was closed to her after Odin made a deal with the Celestials. She fell into a partnership with Amora the Enchantress, but the evil sorceress turned on Valkyrie and imprisoned her spirit in crystal.

Valkyrie was later given form via the body of wealthy socialite and avowed feminist Samantha Parrington. Parrington became the conduit for Valkyrie on several occasions, but the goddess also worked with her long-time teammates in the Defenders while in the body of Barbara Norris. When she incarnates, she usually adopts the same general look of a statuesque blonde (often with braids) in silver armor with a blue cape. Her persona is distinguished by her strength of character and keen awareness of her equality and power as a woman, which has played an important thematic part in many of her adventures over the years.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
