Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #262 - Revival, the comic
Hi Mom, And we're back with more on comics. I have been meaning to write about this series for AT LEAST a year. I had volumes four-six originally included in my recent round-up featured in Hey Mom #257, but I moved them out into a separate entry because that one was getting too long.
So, here we are, discussing the Image comic series REVIVAL, created by Tim Seeley and Mike Norton.
I cannot make the claim that this is my FAVORITE current series or even my favorite IMAGE series, but it's a solid series with gorgeous art and strong story-telling. It blends several core source materials, like Fargo and Twin Peaks with Stephen King like subject matter but then defines its own path and its own style quite effectively. It maintains some elements similar to soap opera in that it unspools stories in an episodic narrative about characters, for the most part, confined to one town, which is under quarantine, though not as dramatically closed off as King's Under the Dome.
The images directly above and in the banner are of the character Martha and are among the most compelling images from the comics. The way Norton captures Martha's facial expression, those haunting and haunted eyes with a mix of malice and determination is riveting. I find myself staring at this image for extended periods of time because there's something it compels me to absorb that I have not yet absorbed.
Great stuff.
I am now very enamoured of video reviews. I am including another video review on this entry, created Joyce Van Herck, who is a young woman in Belgium who enjoys reading. I liked her review of Revival very much, and so I have included it.
Once again, I am going to blatantly steal text from Good Reads for the data about the volumes, and this time I ma leaving the lines that detail the overall rating, the number of ratings, and how many reviews you will find on Good Reads, like this: 3.87 · Rating Details · 4,515 Ratings · 392 Reviews.
As I mentioned, volumes four-six were in the recent Hey Mom #257, but I had not actually read these during my recuperation from the horrible plague illness. I keep up on Revival and read each new volume pretty soon after it is released. So, this comic has been on my list of comics to write about since long before you died, Mom, along with Fatale, which another comic I am reading in trades and that I would like to review.
Like Joyce mentions in her video review, I like that this book is about revival from the dead but not about zombies, AND that the phenomenon of people rising from the dead is isolated to one town.
This is a great series and the art is gorgeous. I am hooked enough to keep reading, and I give it a very high recommendation, though there are other comics being published these days that are just as worthy or more so. Still, Tim Seeley made the jump from Image to DC Comics and has been writing the new Grayson comic, which I think is quite good. Though, I should qualify that Revival helped him land a job with DC, he has no abandoned Revival, and he's still writing it.
The small town focus really helps the book maintain mystery and utilize strong character development. Initial mysteries are extended well as the narrative expands episode by episode. Some very intriguing characters and great story arcs exploring small town horror in a noir fashion.

NOTE on time: When I post late, I had been posting at 7:10 a.m. because Google is on Pacific Time, and so this is really 10:10 EDT. However, it still shows up on the blog in Pacific time. So, I am going to start posting at 10:10 a.m. Pacific time, intending this to be 10:10 Eastern time. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. But I am not going back and changing all the 7:10 a.m. times. But I will run this note
