A Sense of Doubt blog post #1820 - Concordia University - Portland - closing

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1820 - Concordia University - Portland - closing

So, this sucks...

Fw: Concordia University - Portland Ceases Operations After Spring 2020

Subject: Concordia University - Portland Ceases Operations After Spring 2020

Dear Concordia University Community,

Is it with deep regret that Concordia University – Portland’s Board of Regents has voted that the University will cease operations at the end of the Spring 2020 academic semester.

After much prayer and consideration of all options to continue Concordia University – Portland’s 115-year legacy, the Board of Regent concluded that the university’s current and projected enrollment and finances make it impossible to continue its educational mission.  We have come to the decision this is in the best interest of our students, faculty, staff, and partners.

While we don’t yet have all the answers for what comes next, we’ve included a few FAQs to answer your immediate questions.  Having said that, our team will need time over the next several weeks to continue to investigate the answers to your most difficult questions.
We have provided a similar FAQ document to our students and are working to secure transfer agreements for our students to complete their coursework. We ask that you provide them the support they need at this difficulty time, while working with them to complete their coursework at the high level of rigor we expect of our students throughout the rest of the semester.

Additional information can be found on our website at www.cu-portland.edu/closure.
My door remains open to you, and I thank you for your fortitude over the past few years as we explored every possible option to keep CU open.

In Christ,

Rev. Dr. Tom Ries
Interim President

A Word of Hope
February 12, 2020
It has been a couple difficult days on the campuses of Concordia University. The news was difficult to hear and engendered responses of confusion, anger, fear, sadness, and uncertainty. Each person has had to process this information in his or her own way.
There has actually been much support from across the nation as people who have connections with Concordia University Portland have reached out through phone calls and messages, prayers, and social media posts. (Well, there are some self-righteous types who aren’t gracious on social media.)
As challenging a situation as this is, it is not unique. People have experienced greater losses and changes than this throughout history. One instance in particular can bring us a word of hope. It happened in Israel roughly 740 years before Jesus was born.
Isaiah tell us much in the first verse of chapter 6, “In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on the throne, high and exalted, with the train of his robe filling the temple.” When a king died in those days the nation experienced the danger of foreign invaders, bloodshed as successors vied for the throne, and no guarantee that the days ahead would be safe or better. “The king is dead” was as scary as any news they could hear.
But Isaiah looked and saw God on the heavenly throne high and exalted and his huge kingly robe filled the temple. Isaiah continues to describe the awesome scene of angels flying and calling out praises. The enormous temple shook violently. The display of might sent the unequivocal message, The King is not dead! God was still on watch; he was not going anywhere.
Another helpful thing to know is that Daniel, Ezekiel, and John the Apostle were also allowed to peer into heaven. Even though they lived centuries apart, all of them saw a similar scene. God is on the throne, angels are flying, power and glory are emanating, and the message is strong: the Lord, the King, is alive!
In the midst of changes, losses, setbacks, disasters, closures, deaths, damages, defeats, forfeitures, shifts, and just plain bad news, the King is not dead. This is news of hope for every dark day.
Peace in Jesus,
Pastor Bo

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
