A Sense of Doubt blog post #3957 - Letter to Dad #015 - Rob Reiner Farewell

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3957 - Letter to Dad #015 - Rob Reiner Farewell

Hi Big Guy,

Once again, I am delaying the orange tie story because of a topic that came up.

Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle were stabbed to death by their eldest son Nick, found on Sunday December 14th by their daughter Romy.

This news has been a devastating blow to the whole country because of how loved these people were, especially Reiner who directed one of my top five favorite movies -- When Harry Met Sally -- and many others that I love a great deal. In fact, I just recently watched the Spinal Tap sequel.

But also, Reiner played Michael Stivic on the television show All in the Family that we both loved so very much.

My Internet search for the line from an argument Michael has with Gloria -- "and I think it's been longer" -- that became such an inside joke in our family, especially for you Dad, was fruitless. It's too specific of a line to find easily without watching many episodes.

Also, sort of coincidentally but significant, is that not long ago I watched some episodes of the Partridge Family on TUBI, and the first I watched, without knowing ahead of time, guest starred Rob Reiner as a romantic partner for Laurie Partridge. I had quite forgotten he played a guy named Snake from a biker gang in the show's first season

Not only is this just a tragic loss of two fantastic people, one of whom gave so much great art and joy to the world, but it hits home because they were murdered by their son. Nick Reiner was a drug addict and some drugs, such as meth, can really change someone's brain, alter their personality, so that they do things that when not using, they would not do. I understand those facts rationally, and yet, a son just killed his parents, and I am having a hard time wrapping my mind around the emotions that brings up. I would NEVER have done something like he did, and it hurts me deeply that he did what he did. Even though he has not yet been proven guilty (or pleaded guilty) the facts are very clearly implicating him as the killer with really no doubt about it. I feel so sorry for him (Nick), the whole Reiner family, and all the people with whom they were close let alone those of us who adored Rob Reiner. I am sure Nick is devastated about what he has done or at least I hope he is.

I loved you and Mom more than anything. I would have never hurt you. But then, I have not lost my mind to drug addiction.

I am heart broken by this story of the Reiners as I know you would be, Dad.

Someone posted Michael Stivic's goodbye to Archie Bunker from the finale of All in the Family as a fitting tribute and final message in light of this terrible murder.

I share it here in two versions with you.

Write to you more next week on what will be Christmas Day. Both Christmas and New Year's Day fall on Thursdays this year

Love you,
christopher

Filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found dead at their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon in an apparent double homicide. TMZ reported that their deaths are attributed to lacerations consistent with a knife.

The couple's son, Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested on Sunday at 9:15 p.m. and taken into custody the following day at 5:04 a.m. for an alleged felony charge, according to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department records. He is now being held without bail, after having his $4 million bail rescinded. Multiple sources who have spoken with family members say Nick killed his parents, according to PEOPLE.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
