A Sense of Doubt blog post #1298 - Hanging Out the Window With a Bottle Full of Rain - Musical Monday for 1809.10

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1298 - Hanging Out the Window With a Bottle Full of Rain - a Musical Monday Mix for 1809.10

Here at the Tower house, we have been watching the Hulu TV show Castle Rock, based on the characters and settings created by Stephen King.

So, that's where this mix starts. One episode featured the Tom Waits song "Clap Hands."

I considered making this a Tom Waits only mix, but then some interesting choices came up in the You Tube searches, such as David Bowie and Marianne Faithful did a version of Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe"? There's a live version of 6. "Bachelorette" by Björk from the BBC2 show Later with...Jools Holland show in 1997? YES please. Plus a remix of Cat Power's Werewolf" and songs by great black artists like Sonny Boy Williamson, Sister Rosetta Sharpe, and Nina Simone? Add to that a cover of Trent Reznor's "Hurt" by Johnny Cash?? Not bad at all. Maybe not my best mix, and it's very heavy on the Tom Waits, but I like that reliance on one artist.

Closing with "Innocent When You Dream" is also the right choice. If I have to choose, it's my favorite Tom Waits song.

Also, Waits' lyrics are amazing. Here's the lyrics of "Clap Hands" from which I took the title of the mix.

Enjoy.

Clap Hands
Sane, sane, they're all insane
Fireman's blind, the conductor is lame
A Cincinnati jacket and a sad-luck dame
Hanging out the window with a bottle full of rain
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Said roar, roar, the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never coming back here no more
The moon in the window and a bird on the pole
We can always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams
Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
A fifty-dollar bill inside a palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at
Roar, roar, the thunder and the roar
Son of a bitch is never coming back here no more
Moon in the window and a bird on the pole
Always find a millionaire to shovel all the coal
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
I said steam, steam, a hundred bad dreams
Going up to Harlem with a pistol in his jeans
A fifty-dollar bill inside a palladin's hat
And nobody's sure where Mr. Knickerbocker's at
Shine, shine, a Roosevelt dime
All the way to Baltimore and running out of time
Salvation Army seemed to wind up in the hole
They all went to heaven in a little row boat
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Clap hands, clap hands
Well, clap hands, well, clap hands
Oh, clap hands, clap hands
Songwriters: Thomas Alan Waits

Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
