Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1117 - Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon - Plate of Shrimp - HEY MOM REPRINT

Hi Mom, Today's reprint was one I linked back on Thursday in the last Hey Mom post. I was reminded of how much I liked it, and I noticed that I did not have a posted entitled something to do with Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, even though I have a category for posts named for it.

So, here it is.

Now, you're seeing it.

This is the "recency illusion" or the "frequency illusion."

Here’s a quick summary of the phenomenon:
In point of fact, coincidences themselves are usually just an artifact of perception. We humans tend to underestimate the probability of coinciding events, so our expectations are at odds with reality. And non-coincidental events do not grab our attention with anywhere near the same intensity, because coincidences are patterns, and the brain actually stimulates us for successfully detecting patterns, hence their inflated value. In short, patterns are habit-forming.
But when we hear a word or name which we just learned the previous day, it often feels like more than a mere coincidence. This is because Baader-Meinhof is amplified by the recency effect, a cognitive bias that inflates the importance of recent stimuli or observations. This increases the chances of being more aware of the subject when we encounter it again in the near future.
See more about what this has to do with spiritual growth at the link under the image up top.

But next, some images and then the reprint. BYE!

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #194 - Plate of Shrimp

Hey Mom,

So, I am in class last term, and I cannot think of the name of The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon, a special phenomenon in which you don't notice something until it comes into your consciousness. Like, say, I have never heard of M.I.A. the musical artist. I do not believe I have seen her name mentioned anywhere or heard her music or seen videos or anything. But then someone tells me about her, and suddenly she's everywhere. I see her name everywhere. I hear one of her songs while in the mall. I see a video in Best Buy playing on a TV for sale.

Thing is, how do you Google search for The Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon unless you remember the name of it?

Synchronicity sort of works. And Carl Jung (You know that I am a huge Jungian, right?) coined the term. Jung used the concept to justify the paranormal.

Thanks to my friend Gregg Morris for reminding me about the "Plate of Shrimp" speech from Repo Man as seen here. Sound on this one is not great. If you want better sound, search the title I use here and there's a better clip on You Tube.

"Yeah, you got it. Time machines."

"The more you drive, the less intelligent you are."

"It's all part of the cosmic unconsciousness."

I told you some of these would be short.

Reflect and connect.
Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.
Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

NEW (written 1708.27) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of your death, Mom. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom.
