A Sense of Doubt blog post #1464 - Netflix cancels Daredevil, Punisher, and Jessica Jones

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1464 - Netflix cancels Daredevil, Punisher, and Jessica Jones

These are signs, portents, omens of what is to come.

Is it something wicked?

My money is on a Disney streaming service that either includes a Marvel stream or features a separate stream channel that must be subscribed to separately to obtain the Marvel Comics content.

You dropped cable to save money?

Suckah.

Netflix Cancels DAREDEVIL... But MARVEL Has Plans For His Future

Whether its declining ratings or Disney pulling back Marvel intellectual properties in support of their own upcoming streaming service, it looks like the Netflix Defenders corner of the MCU is closing up their street-level shop.
Netflix has decided against renewing Daredevil for a fourth season, with a stated decision to "close this chapter on a high note."

"Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix,” Netflix says in a statement given to Deadline.. “We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years."

“While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel," reads Netflix's statement.
Marvel Television and Netflix still have agreements for a third season of Jessica Jones and a second for The Punisher; they could be referring to an intent for Daredevil to show up in those "future projects", but they could also be referring to the character segueing to other platforms such as movies, another network, or perhaps the Disney+ streaming service.
The decision not to renew Daredevil comes after similar decisions for third seasons of Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Marvel has not made a formal statement regarding Netflix's decision, however Marvel's Twitter account for the show posted this:

Netflix has canceled both The Punisher and Jessica Jones, according to Deadline. The recently-filmed third season of Jessica Jones is still expected to air on the streaming service later this year, however the company has reportedly pre-emptively canceled any intention of subsequent seasons.
"Marvel’s The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix,” an unspecified Netflix representative told Deadline. “Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come."

"In addition, in reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” the representative continued. “We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others”.

“We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

Marvel Television and Netflix's partnership was announced in 2013, and debuted with Daredevil's first season on March 18, 2016.
Now with five significant Marvel characters - Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and the Punisher - and high profile villains like the Kingpin without a television home, it will be worth watching what the future of these characters will hold. Possibilities include revivals of the existing series on other streaming services like Hulu or Disney+, integration into the theatrical MCU, and/or a reboot of the characters on film.
