Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1151 - Total Gallimaufry! Throwback Thursday on Friday for 1902.15 - a sense of doubt post #1457
Hi Mom, I am posting this today, Friday, a day later than usual (and really Sunday) because of Valentine's Day, better known as Horny Werewolf Day.
Here's a picture of Dad after he fell off the roof in 1981. He had been window washing and he fell off the perch, rolled down the slanted roof, hit his shoulder on the bridge railing, and landed face down on the bridge with his nose in between two boards, luckily. Had he landed on his nose, he might have died instantly.
And then Dad outlived you, even though with so many sleepless nights and the wear and tear of care, he thought you would outlive him.
He's doing great, Mom. Truly.
I love him just as much as I love you. We have a great family. Thank you for that.
Today is a true gallimaufry of yummy random stew, which I will partially curate. I have just been dumping stuff in here for at least a week, maybe two.
First, Enes Kanter comes to Portland. I shared about him earlier as he was afraid of being assassinated by operatives of the Turkish government.

Next, a new comic book podcast that I discovered while doing other things in the Internet wilderness. Looks good. I have not yet listened, so more than anything, I just put stuff here so that I might remember.

I liked this quote:
The problem with Donald Trump’s ascension to power is that it’s exacerbated the inability of Americans to have a rational, fact-and-reality-based argument. It’s become well-nigh impossible to actually debate an issue- you know, listen to the other side and respond respectfully with an argument you can support with facts and data. Trump isn’t responsible for creating this mess, but he’s certainly done his part (and then some) to reduce our political discourse to screaming, shouting, and indulging in cheap personal insults.

Trump's Border Wall Could Split SpaceX's Texas Launchpad In Two (latimes.com)
Posted by EditorDavid from the no-fly-zones dept
An anonymous reader quotes the Los Angeles TimesA launchpad on the U.S.-Mexico border, which it plans to use for rockets carrying humans around the world and eventually to Mars, could be split in two by the Trump administration's planned wall... Lawmakers said they were concerned about the effect on the company's 50-acre facility after seeing a Department of Homeland Security map showing a barrier running through what they described as a launchpad...
James Gleeson, a SpaceX spokesman, declined to provide details on how the fence would affect the facility. "The Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently requested SpaceX permit access to our South Texas Launch site to conduct a site survey," he said in a statement. "At this time, SpaceX is evaluating the request and is in communication with DHS to further understand their plans...." Musk is working on a new, more powerful vehicle known as Starship to eventually ferry humans to Mars. SpaceX recently announced that it would test the Starship test vehicle at the site in south Texas.

SpaceX Seeks Approval For Up To 1M Earth Stations for Its Satellite Service (geekwire.com)
Posted by EditorDavid from the satellite-internet dept.
SpaceX just filed a new earth-station license application with America's Federal Communications Commisions, seeking blanket approval "for up to a million earth stations" for customers of their Starlink satellite internet service, reports GeekWire:Those satellites have already received clearance from the FCC, and SpaceX plans to launch the first elements of the initial 4,425-satellite constellation this year, using Falcon 9 rockets.... Eventually, SpaceX wants to build up the network to take in as many as 12,000 satellites in low Earth orbit...
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has said the Starlink project aims is to provide high-speed, reliable and affordable broadband data services to consumers in the U.S. and around the world, including an estimated 3.8 billion people who are underserved by existing networks. When he unveiled the project four years ago in Seattle, he said revenue from the internet service would pay for his vision of creating a city on Mars.
The application assures regulators that the earth stations will "incorporate advanced technologies to enable highly efficient use of the spectrum and enhance the customer's broadband experience."

THE CHURCH THAT STOOD STRONG
Lower Albina has seen a lot of change over the last 50 years, but even as gentrification and displacement have transformed the neighborhood, one church has stood strong through it all.
Vancouver Avenue First Baptist Church is where Martin Luther King Jr. came to deliver a major civil rights address in 1961, it’s where hundreds of flood victims turned to find comfort and community following the Vanport Flood in 1948, and it’s where multiple generations of Portland families continue to worship every Sunday.
With VAFBC getting ready to celebrate its 75th anniversary next month, we talked with historian Raymond Burell III about the church’s legacy, its future, and its significance to Portland’s black community.
Check out our video on Facebook for the quick version — or pick up a copy of Raymond’s book “Vancouver Avenue: Yesterday, Today, & Forever” for the full scoop.
And while we’re talking Lower Albina, we have a winning reader Q to announce in our latest PDXplained voting round.
The winning question: “Lower Albina isn’t one of the city’s official neighborhoods. Why is that? What’s the history of how Portland’s neighborhoods were formed?”
Thanks to everyone who submitted questions or cast a vote. We’ll let you know what we learn. ️

NEW (written 1708.27) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT.
