A Sense of Doubt blog post #1503 - Young and the Restless - Kristoff St. John - RIP
I should probably make this a HEY MOM post given what it's about, but you're reading always anyway, right Mom?
I am a bit behind on Y&R news and posting it. I sat on this post for quite a while.
It's an extremely sad piece of news.
I have enjoyed Kristoff St. John's -- aka Neil Winters from the Young and the Restless -- acting for many years. He's one of the Y&R regulars.
I am also about 100 episodes behind on watching my beloved soap, a travesty that you, Mom, would not be pleased about. But, you know, life. Thankfully my DVR can hold them because I do not think CBS archives that far back on its streaming app.
Here's a collection of news and interviews about St. John's death.
Rest in peace, Kristoff. I am among the many who will miss you very much.

WATCH: Kristoff St. John's Ex-Wife Mia
Talks to Dr. Oz About His Last Days
Mia St. John, the ex-wife of Kristoff
St. John, talks with Dr. Oz about
the actor's final days before he passed away on February 3. During the
emotional sit-down, which aired February 21, the former world champion boxer
revealed St. John had his own demons that manifested when their son Julian took
his own life in 2014.
Mia
explained to Dr. Oz that Julian had schizophrenia, while the elder St. John
battled bipolar disorder. Once Julian took his life in the mental health
facility where he received treatment, Kristoff never recovered.
According
to Mia,
It was our biggest nightmare. And he never, ever could recover
from the guilt. He felt guilty, he felt responsible. Even though the facility
was found guilty of neglect and falsifying records. And I kept trying to tell
him over and over again that it was not his fault.

SOAP OPERA STAR KRISTOFF ST. JOHN HOSPITALIZED AFTER
THREATENING SUICIDE
After he
reportedly held a gun to his own head, threatening suicide, soap opera Young
and the Restless star, Kristoff St. John was hospitalized. He was taken to the
hospital for a 72-hour-long psychiatric
evaluation following his suicide attempt.
Police sources have revealed that the man’s former wife, boxer
Mia St. John was the one who called the police and told them that Kristoff sent
her worrying pics of him holding a firearm to his head.
When cops arrived, they confiscated 2 guns and placed Kristoff
under a 72-hour hold for mental evaluation. This whole ordeal is close to the
three year anniversary of his son Julian’s suicide, who was 24 at the time.
Sources say the upcoming anniversary had him very, very upset.

Julian St. John had
been struggling with mental illness for a very long time before he decided to
end it all on November 23, 2014.
Julian’s
lifeless body was found in a bathroom of the mental hospital where he was
checked in, with a bag over his head.
On
October 12, the actor father took to social media to ask his followers to share
Mia and shrink Dr. Drew Pinsky’s photos regarding mental illness.
“There
was a point in Julian’s history, in the last three years, where he got worse
and worse and so Mia and I were desperate to locate a facility to put him in,”
St John told Entertainment Tonight in 2015.
The family decided on La Casa Psychiatric
Health Facility in Long Beach, California, but in their lawsuit list a number
of problems with the facility, claiming that workers ‘regularly skipped
mandatory check-ins and observations of Julian’ and then ‘falsified documents
in order to cover up the claimed neglect.’
“He attempted suicide two and a half weeks
prior to when he actually completed it and he was supposed to be on suicide
watch,” revealed Mia St John, Julian’s mother, in her interview with ET in
2015.
The lawsuit claims this meant that Julian was
to be checked on every 15 minutes, but that at the time of his death it had
been almost an hour since an employee looked in on the young man.
The St. John’s lawsuit was settled but no
terms were divulged.
Here are some startling statistics about
suicide:
On average, there are 121 suicides per day.
White males accounted for 7 of 10 suicides in 2015.
Firearms account for almost 50% of all suicides.
The rate of suicide is highest in middle age — white men in particular.
Men die by suicide 3.5x more often than women.

Mia St. John set up the “El Saber es Poder” (“Knowledge
is Power”) Foundation to battle mental
illness following her son’s death.

What
Kristoff St. John did on his last episode of Young and the Restless
February 06,
2019 at 03:41 PM EST
UPDATED, 2/8: CBS has announced that The
Young and the Restless will launch a storyline in late April that will
pay tribute to Kristoff St. John and his character of Neil Winters.
PREVIOUS: The Young and the
Restless on Feb. 6 featured the last appearance by Kristoff
St. John, the beloved soap actor who was found dead in his home Sunday.
In the episode of the CBS sudser, Neil Winters
(St. John) meets up with his adopted son Devon (Bryton James)
at the Genoa City Athletic Club. Devon is about to host an important music
showcase so Neil came to watch and support his son.
“It’s your big night,” says Neil, who is
splitting time between Genoa City and an out-of-town location so he can be near
his incarcerated daughter Lily (the recurring Christel Khalil). “I’m proud
of you. I’m really glad I’m here to witness this next triumph in your life.”
The episode is vintage Neil, who’s among the
most loving and supportive characters on the show. The rest of the episode
features Neil offering quiet, moral support to Devon, who loses his cool over a
singer who’s gone MIA. Neil then saves the day by offering a solution — he
suggests that Devon’s sister, Ana (who is from another father) sing, instead.
Naturally, Ana is a hit! Neil and Devon
fist-bump to celebrate. “She did it for you,” Neil says to Devon. . “That’s what family does.”
The episode ended with the
tribute, “In Loving Memory Of Our Dear Friend.”
St. John will also be
honored during the CBS sudser on Feb. 8. The network is not saying how it will
address the character of Neil going forward.
“Kristoff was a joy,” his
onetime costar Victoria Rowell said in a statement Wednesday. “He lived for the
day. He loved working in film, prime time and starring on The Young and the Restless. He cared about
preserving the African American legacy on the show and not being pigeon-holed
into a Black storyline. Obviously, we coveted the Black family on Y&R, but we also
coveted that we were crossovers. Proud we pulled in a huge audience, and a huge
Black, female audience. We understood the gravity of what we were responsible
for and he took that very seriously. I shall forever cherish our private and
professional time together. Now, is a time for reflection, to mourn his
departure and celebrate his brilliance, permanently imprinted on my memory.”
St. John, who was 52, originated the role of
Neil on Y&R in 1991 and won two Emmys for playing the
makeup executive who was best known for his tempestuous relationship with Drucilla
Winters (Victoria Rowell). In October of 2017, the actor took a leave of absence from the show to undergo
psychiatric treatment after a reported scare regarding his mental health. He
had been open about his battles with depression after the loss of his son,
Julian, who died by suicide nearly three years ago.
The actor returned to work at Y&R in March of 2018.
