A Sense of Doubt blog post #1514 - First STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Trailer Teases Lando & Emperor Palpatine

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1514 - First STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Trailer Teases Lando & Emperor Palpatine

It's here!!

The first trailer for the next Star Wars, episode IX, has arrived, and it is glorious.

The title reveal is also the right title, the perfect title.

So geek world is exploding.

I have included here some of the geek diatribe and some images including a GIF.

First up, a snip from Deseret News, then i09's Gizmodo, followed by Charles Skaggs' DAMN Good Coffee and Hot blog, and two You Tube videos. I don't often go in for the fan videos on You Tube, but these are on the shorter side and have a couple of good talking points each.

Here's some of my relevant posts related to Star Wars as we gear up for the new movie.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1412 - Rey and the Sad Devolution of the Female Character

The last link was for a video I posted in January and some of the subsequent comments on You Tube.

In the video, the documentarian proposes that Rey has failed to become a beloved character in the franchise -- according to many Star Wars fans -- because she embodies the Mary Sue trope, a seemingly perfect female character, who is often an "author insert" or a "wish fulfillment," rather a real person with flaws and weaknesses.

Rey is accused of being a Mary Sue rather than a character, a strong woman just to be an icon of strong women.

Of course, the web site called the Mary Sue jumped on this issue again with the release of the trailer for Episode IX.

But this is just a new theory of secret machinations and Skywalker genealogy.

https://www.themarysue.com/star-wars-rise-of-skywalker-theories/

This is more the Mary Sue analysis.

https://medium.com/@matthewkadish/proof-rey-from-the-last-jedi-is-a-mary-sue-storycraft-72cb51aefd2b

This line stands out to me in the excellent analysis from the MEDIUM link above:

A strong character is dynamic. A perfect character is static.

and

Therefore, it could be argued that no transformation ever took place with the character of Rey. Her “character arc” was more of a “character flatline.”

There's more in the Medium article than I have time or desire to delve into now. But it's an argument about Rey worth considering.

I like Rey, and I have enjoyed the latest episodes VII and VIII.

I am dazzled by Daisey Ridley's attractiveness? Am I a JJ Abrams zombie? Has the warp drive of my critical faculties gone off line?

I am working on those things, but for now, I am excited about the new movie.

Here's the final shot.

The medal is passed

In the “Rise of Skywalker” trailer, someone can be seen holding a medal. That medal is identical to the medals given to Han and Luke in “A New Hope.”

The force has awoken. The last of the Jedi has relit the spark for a new generation beyond him. And now it’s time for the Skywalker Saga to come to a close with The Rise of Skywalker, 42 years after we first stepped into the galaxy far far away—and we finally have our first look at the film.
Lucasfilm has just officially confirmed that the ninth chapter of the main Star Wars saga will be subtitled The Rise of Skywalker, as well as given us our first tiny teaser of what we can expect from this culmination of decades of Star Warsstorytelling.

Featuring an all-star cast that sees the return of Mark Hamill and the dearly-missed Carrie Fisher as Luke Skywalker and General Leia Organa, as well as the long-awaited return of Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will bring an end to the story of the Skywalker family, as the last of the Resistance—including Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe (Oscar Isaac), Finn (John Boyega), and Rose (Kelly Marie Tran)—goes into battle to free the galaxy from the tyrannical grip of the First Order and its new Supreme Leader, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver). Directed by The Force Awakens’ J.J. Abrams, the film will also include new characters played by Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings), Keri Russell (The Americans), and more.
What do you think of our first look at The Rise of Skywalker? Ominous? Hopeful? What does it all mean? Let us know for now in the comments, but we won’t have much longer to really wait and see ourselves: Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20, 2019.

First STAR WARS: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER Trailer Teases Lando & Emperor Palpatine

Begun the Episode IX hype machine has.

At the Lucasfilm expo Star Wars Celebration in Chicago's McCormick Place, Disney's Lucasfilm revealed the full title and first teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode IX, now officially known as Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

The two-minute teaser opens on the planet Jakku, not seen since Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2005.  We're reintroduced to Rey, (Daisy Ridley), who is breathing heavy on the desert planet.

We hear a voiceover from Rey's Jedi mentor, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), who says, "We've passed on all we know.  A thousand generations live in you now...but this is your fight."

Rey readies her lightsaber and we hear the the sounds of Kylo Ren's TIE silencer in the distance.  Rey takes off running as the ship quickly approaches, and she does a huge backflip leap as it reaches her, presumably to attack it from the top.

Next, we see Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), the Supreme Leader of the First Order, cutting down someone with his lightsaber in a crimson forest, followed by someone with a very hairy hand welding Kylo Ren's shattered helmet back together.

Everyone's favorite bromance, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and Finn (John Boyega) are shown somewhere on Jakku, then we see BB-8 alongside an ever smaller, one-wheeled droid.

This is followed by a quick scene of Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams) laughing while piloting the Millennium Falcon through hyperspace alongside Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo).

We glimpse Poe, Finn and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) taking fire while on Jakku, followed by General Leia Organa (the late Carrie Fisher) gently caressing the medal she gave to Han Solo at the end of the original Star Wars film.  Leia and Rey also share another tearful hug.

"We'll always be with you," Luke continues in a voiceover as we see Rey and the others staring out at the crashed ruins of what appears to be the second Death Star from Return of the Jedihinting that they may be on the forest moon of Endor.  "No one's ever really gone."

Suddenly, the screen goes back and we hear the familiar cackling laughter of Emperor Sheev Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid), whom we thought was killed at the end of Return of the Jedi.  Ruh-roh!

If you'd like to check out the teaser trailer, you can view it below thanks to the official TV Guide account...

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 20, 2019.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
