A Sense of Doubt blog post #1865 - Concordia Classes from 2003.26 and 2003.27 for 2003.16 and 2003.20

So, here we are. Today's post is one I am not pushing to social media because it's JUST for my current CONCORDIA STUDENTS, though I may use some of these instructional videos in future classes at other schools (because Concordia Portland is closing).

Likely, right now, only my Concordia student land here. However, if you are someone who checks my blog from time to time, this note demonstrates the purpose of all these videos.

Following, you will find the videos for two class periods (one a set of three and the other a set of two) followed by notes for each class.

CULTURE JAM CONTENT pt.1
- Today’s class is dedicated to content that you could use in your projects. Not just suggestions of content but also ideas for types of content.

- Book of the day #1 - A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn

- Show blog post about Columbus and read

- These are memes. The “history” of Columbus as an intrepid explorer to be admired is a corporate meme. Here the corporation is the white-European men who colonized the new world for profit and gain without regard for the “savage” societies that were indigenous to the land. Historical accounts taught to children glorified a genocidal maniac as a great historical figure giving him his own holiday and rhyming story to hide the truth of the horrors perpetrated to occupy this land and construct the nation through slavery and brutality.

- Book of the day #2 - Wacky Packages
- Satire is a form of meta-meme - one that counteracts the happy, mindnumb effects of consumerism. These stickers “demarketed” products in the vein of Mad Magazine, one of the greatest examples of satire in the 20th century.

- Show Mad Magazine blog.

- THE TRUE IS A MOMENT OF THE FALSE

“In a world that is really upside-down, the true is a moment of the false”: this summary, which is the best of the thought of the situationist philosopher Guy Debord, is also the aphorism that is most often quoted, sometimes to the point of nausea, by people of all types.

“critical longevity”

The Society of the Spectacle’s critical longevity can be partly attributed to Debord’s refusal to describe the spectacle’s form. By focusing instead on the spectacle’s ever-shifting qualities, Debord encourages the reader to scrutinize the world around them. It is for this reason that the book is routinely celebrated for its prescience. A contemporary reader can readily apply Debord’s analysis to the fracturing of the media industry, the rise of the internet, or to the use of social media. Note how Debord starts multiple sentences with the phrase “the spectacle is…”:

The spectacle is the other side of money: it is the general abstract equivalent of all commodities. – Thesis 49

The spectacle is nothing more than an image of happy unification surrounded by desolation and fear at the tranquil center of misery. – Thesis 63

The spectacle is absolutely dogmatic and at the same time cannot really achieve any solid dogma. – Thesis 71

DANK MEMES
Dank meme refers to viral internet content that, due to overuse or passing trends, has lost its value or currency. It can also refer to exceptionally unique or odd memes.
Deep Fried Memes - Memes that imitate and exaggerate the degradation of hood culture influenced images.

Deep Fried Memes Deep Fried Memes are a style of meme wherein an image is run through dozens of filters to the point where the image appears grainy, washed-out, and ...

“Tell the truth but tell it slant”
~ Emily Dickinson

BITCH by Elizabeth Wurtzel

I read a bit from this book after explaining its purpose. The readings contains some colorful and adult language that some may consider vulgar! The language is not meant to be vulgar. It’s meant to be empowering of feminism and the independence and individual strength of women.

Next we examine this site:

BITCH MEDIA

“Of course, we shouldn’t expect filmmakers to guarantee verisimilitude or to influence public opinion about the media. They might, however, better reflect the challenges facing journalism, freedom of speech, and American democracy if they search out fresh stories. In a time when 43 percent of Republicans believe the president should have the power to shut down media outlets and when the horror of being shot in a U.S. newsroom has gone from the hyperbolic ending of a morality tale to a rare but real possibility, the truth about television news continues to be far scarier than fiction.”

MEDIA ADDICTIVE AND MANIPULATIVE

SOME PARTS of the Culture Jam book on media addiction and manipulation

CULTURE JAM BOOK

“Art Moore”
- There’s gate keepers on the message - pgs 32-33

- “we’re mummified” - pg. 12

Layer upon layer of mediated artifice come
between us and the world until we are mummified. The commercial
mass media are rearranging our neurons, manipulating our emotions,
making powerful new connections between deep immaterial needs
and material products. So virtual is the hypodermic needle that we
don't feel it. So gradually is the dosage increased that we're not aware
of the toxicity.

The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
