Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1207 (SoD #1985) - EXTERMINATE THE BRUTES - Weekly Hodge Podge 2007.25
Hi Mom,
This is a great edition of the weekly hodge podge.
As you surely remember, Mom, 1985 is also the year I graduated from Kalamazoo College. It was going to be 1984, but I chose to take a fifth year. I am glad I did. I liked the 1985 class and felt closer to them than the 1984 class.
See photos at end.
What's happening in the world?
Naked yoga protesting, more police state fascist constitutional violations, space news, Covid-19 news, and more.
I wonder what you would think of all this stuff.
Still no justice for Breonna Taylor as those who murdered her are still not charged.
The Occupant of the White House thinks kneeling during the National Anthem in genuflecting tribute to the murders of African Americans and rampant police brutality is disrespect to the nation and the flag and yet refusing to change the name of army bases named for traitors to this country who fought the controlling government for the right to keep slaves is completely respectful.
There's a disconnect in that conflation of beliefs.
There's also a disconnect between Johns Hopkins data and Worldometer data on Covid-19 deaths because the Trumpian state of idiocy and propaganda has taken control of the data but doesn't know what it is doing and has no plan. So, more of that.
Meanwhile, goon squads of armed "federal officers" (think Gestapo) are entering American cities where protests against systemic racism are happening, but only ones run by Democrat mayors and/or governors, to "disappear" people without due cause, process, or even identification AND attacking people with tear gas and other "non-lethal" deterrents to keep them from shouting mean things or attacking buildings with violence (IE Graffiti).
What has happened to our nation and the rule of law? Science denial is rampant. A pandemic is being politicized. Reverent and clearly respectful kneeling is being called disrespect. It's like 1984 and convincing the oppressed that 2+ 2 is whatever the people in power say that it is. It's 5, it's 7, it's 500,000.
When a so-called "president" (I prefer to call him the occupant, the occupier of my house, your house, our house, the People's house) gives an interview (recent Sean Hannity interview) in which nearly everything he says is untrue, a blatant lie, false, concocted, misinformed, and outrageously wrong, then we have arrived at a time in our nation in which our government has become like some demented Gong Show game of Survivor crossed with Svengoolie and Bozo the Clown.
I am working on a post to address this issue because I am finding it harder and harder to believe that anyone with a brain could support this kind of insanity.
And so, WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE.
Here we go.

Undress for redress: The rise of naked protests in Africa
“Women give life and so to put the most private symbols of motherhood into the public arena is to negate that life and to say those in power are dead to society.”
Ugandan women protesting in Kampala in 2012. |
A couple of months ago, a firestorm of controversy and debate was ignited in Uganda when Dr Stella Nyanzi stripped naked as a form of protest. The academic at Makerere University’s Institute of Social Research was involved in a dispute with the institute’s director, and in retaliation at being locked out of her office discarded her clothes.
As Nyanzi’s protest hit the headlines in Uganda and beyond, the response was highly polarised. Some Ugandans fully supported the academic’s bold actions, while others expressed outrage.
For instance, on the one hand, opposition leader Kizza Besigye told African Arguments “we’re happy that somebody like Stella Nyanzi has used defiance against injustice and unfairness”, and activist Ingrid Turinawe insisted “women in this country are pushed so hard to do such terrible things”.
But on the other, Minister of Ethics and Integrity Rev Simon Lokodo emphasised that “the government has banned all pornographic activities that are not line with our morals, norms, and cultures”, and an investigation was launched.
Earlier this week, that investigation filed its report, which concluded that Nyanzi should face disciplinary action for gross misconduct and insubordination. The committee behind the report said that Nyanzi’s actions had contravened an institutional rule “which calls upon all staff to at all times act in a reasonable and responsible manner”.

In 2013, for example, 50 women in Lakang Amuru district in the north stripped naked in protest at alleged land grabbing. In 2014, a group of women in eastern Uganda took off their clothes claiming the government wanted to appropriate their property and give it to Soroti University for development. In 2015, an 83-year-old woman in Bukedea District in eastern Uganda took off her clothes in at a land takeover by Chinese investors. And also in that year, dozens of women in Apaa village, northern Uganda, naked in front of two visiting government ministers in protest at their possible eviction.

However, over the course of his stay in Africa, Kurtz becomes corrupted. He takes his pamphlet and scribbles in, at the very end, the words "Exterminate all the brutes!" He induces the natives to worship him, setting up rituals and venerations worthy of a tyrant. By the time Marlow, the protagonist, sees Kurtz, he is ill with jungle fever and almost dead. Marlow seizes Kurtz and endeavors to take him back down the river in his steamboat. Kurtz dies on the boat with the last words, "The horror! The horror!" Kurtz ultimately was changed by the jungle. At first he wanted to bring civilization to the natives, as his painting shows, but by the end he wants to "exterminate all the brutes!"

LeBron James calls Black Lives Matter 'a walk of life,' advocates for Breonna Taylor
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29528067/lebron-james-calls-black-lives-matter-walk-life-advocates-breonna-taylor
Dave McMenaminESPN Staff WriterJuly 23, 2020
With the clock ticking under a minute before halftime in the Los Angeles Lakers' first scrimmage in Orlando, Florida, on Thursday, LeBron James zoomed past two defenders near midcourt to throw down a hammer dunk in transition.
As James split Jerry West's waistline while speeding through the massive NBA logo at the tipoff circle, TV viewers could see three words in block letters printed on the court on the top of their screens above him: "BLACK LIVES MATTER."
The phrase, which entered the public lexicon after George Zimmerman was acquitted for the murder of Trayvon Martin in 2013 and became the title of the social action that has been omnipresent in recent months following the killings of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and other Black Americans, is something that James says should be considered permanent, not passing.
"A lot of people kind of use this analogy, talking about Black Lives Matter as a movement. It's not a movement," James said after scoring 12 points in 15 minutes in the Lakers' 108-104 loss to the Dallas Mavericks. "When you're Black, it's not a movement. It's a lifestyle. We sit here and say it's a movement, and, OK, how long is this movement going to last? 'Don't stop the movement.' No, this is a walk of life. When you wake up and you're Black, that is what it is. It shouldn't be a movement. It should be a lifestyle. This is who we are. ...
"I don't like the word 'movement' because, unfortunately, in America and in society, there ain't been no damn movement for us. There ain't been no movement."
In this moment, James, 35, finds himself to be more than just a basketball player trying to push through aging legs and a global pandemic to stack another title on his Hall of Fame résumé.
He is a success story from humble beginnings, keenly aware of the pitfalls he sidestepped to get to where he is today. He is not only arguably the league's best player -- the Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo would like a word -- but without a doubt its most impactful voice.
"When he speaks, a lot of people listen," teammate Anthony Davis said.
So after James played in his first game in an NBA uniform in more than four months, his postgame comments were focused on larger issues than how the Lakers' defense handled Luka Doncic or what first impression JR Smith made.
"First of all, I want to continue to shed light on justice for Breonna Taylor and to her family and everything that's going on with that situation," James said as an opening statement.
e wrote "#Justice4BreonnaT" in marker on his sneakers for the game and was asked what steps he wanted to see to deliver that justice. Taylor, a Black emergency medical technician, was killed in Louisville, Kentucky, in March after plainclothes officers executed a "no-knock" warrant related to a narcotics investigation and shot the 26-year-old at least eight times, per reports. No drugs were found.
"We want the cops arrested who committed that crime," James said of the three Louisville police officers involved.
Detective Brett Hankison was fired. Jon Mattingly and Myles Cosgrove, the other officers serving the warrant, were put on administrative reassignment.
"Us as the NBA, and us as the players, and me as one of the leaders of this league, I want her family to know and I want the state of Kentucky to know that we feel for it and we want justice," James said. "That's what it's all about. What's right is right, and what's wrong is wrong. And this is a wrong situation that's going on in my eyes and in a lot of other eyes, not only here in America but I bet in the world as well."
He pointed out the irony of how "fortunate" it was that Floyd's death -- caused by a Minneapolis police officer kneeling on his neck -- was captured on video, because the tragedy was undeniable.
"I mean, is that what we need to see, a video of Breonna being killed to realize how bad the situation is?" James questioned.
His comments added to the din of players drawing attention to Taylor's case since the NBA invited 22 teams to the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex to restart the season following a lengthy hiatus because of the coronavirus pandemic.
James said he hoped other players -- individuals who might normally feel "scared" of potential fallout -- would feel empowered to continue to speak up while in Orlando.
"Because it's a time where we are being heard," he said. "Either if you really care or not, we're being heard. But that's what's most important."
Beyond his thoughts on Taylor, James spoke with a wider scope when addressing reporters for nearly 15 minutes -- about twice as long as his normal postgame session -- describing the systematic challenges that he sees Black people facing in this country.
"We know that for one step that someone else might have to take, or for one yard someone else may have to take, we know we got to take five more steps," James said. "We know we got to take 10 more yards to get to the end zone. I mean, we understand that. We know that. But it's also what makes us as strong, it makes us as powerful, it makes us so unique and unified is that we done had so much hardships in our life.
"It's just heartbreaking, man. You guys don't understand. Unless you're a person of color, you guys don't understand. I understand that you might feel for it, but you could never truly understand what it is to be Black in America."
James was asked whether he sensed any progress since July 2016, when he, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul opened up the ESPYS by calling for social change.
"I mean, 2016, Barack [Obama] was our president," James said. "We know what's going on now. So is that progress? I don't think, I think we all can see and say that's not progress."
Progress, in James' estimation, will start with communication and a willingness and urgency to understand one another.
"If you could just sit there and talk to someone, look at someone eye-to-eye and say how you feel, no matter if they like it or not, you can respect them," he said. "Somebody might not agree. ... But if I can look you dead in your eye and you can you can look back at me and say, 'Listen, to each his own, I don't agree with that,' then I can respect you out of that. A lot of people cannot even have that conversation."
THE WEEKLY PANDEMIC REPORT
I am seeing a big discrepancy between the Johns Hopkins data in death totals and WORLDOMETER data, which aggregates data from many more sources. Could this be the slow down due to the change in how the CDC obtains the data, having it filter first through Health and Human Services department.

Coronavirus Infection Rates: 10 US States Higher Than Any Country in the World (nytimes.com)
The New York Times has created a surprising interactive analysis of the number of coronavirus cases (per million residents) in different countries:With its cases surging since mid-June, the United States is squarely in the top 10. Leading the outbreak now are countries in the Persian Gulf, where the virus has spread rapidly among foreign laborers. [Oman, Bahrain, and Kuwait.] Rounding out the top 10 are South Africa, Israel and several countries in Latin America. [Panama, Brazil, Colombia, Bolivia]
The current U.S. outbreak is especially stark when compared to other large, high-income countries. All have few cases today compared to the United States... Italy and Spain saw some of the worst early outbreaks, before strict control measures brought cases down. Now, some schools are open, adults are back at work and tourists are on vacation. Even Sweden, where cases surged after the government chose to forgo the strict lockdowns of its neighbors, has seen cases drop.
The surge in the United States is so extreme that, once adjusted for population, these 10 states are recording more new cases than any country in the world. [Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, Arizona, Alabama, South Carolina, Texas, Idaho, and Tennessee].

Mavericks owner Mark Cuban: 'National Anthem Police in this country are out of control'
https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29502673/mavericks-owner-mark-cuban-national-anthem-police-country-control
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban declared that the "National Anthem Police in this country are out of control," leading to a tense exchange on Twitter with Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican who represents Texas.
Cuban tweeted "Bye" on Sunday in response to a tweet from Mark Davis in which the Dallas-based conservative talk show host expressed enthusiasm about the Mavs but added that he would no longer be a fan "the minute one player kneels for the anthem." Davis also suggested that Cuban could help guide the Mavs and the NBA "to do whatever gesture they wish without insulting the nation."
Cuban elaborated on his thoughts in another tweet.
"The National Anthem Police in this country are out of control," he tweeted. "If you want to complain, complain to your boss and ask why they don't play the National Anthem every day before you start work."
As he has in the past, President Donald Trump chimed in on the subject Tuesday morning on Twitter.
"Looking forward to live sports, but any time I witness a player kneeling during the National Anthem, a sign of great disrespect for our Country and our Flag, the game is over for me!"
Cruz, who became a staunch supporter of President Trump after finishing as the runner-up for the Republican presidential nomination for the 2016 election, expressed outrage in a tweet Monday morning.
"Really??!?" Cruz tweeted. "NBA is telling everyone who stands for the flag, who honors our cops and our veterans, to 'piss off'? In Texas, no less? Good luck with that."
Cuban responded: "Have some balls for once @tedcruz. Speak to me. It's my tweet."
Cruz responded to Cuban by asking his thoughts on the NBA's relationship with China and took a dig at Cuban by asking if his players could use "Free Hong Kong" on their jerseys.
Cuban responded: "I can say Black Lives Matter. I can say there is systemic racism in this country. I can say there is a Pandemic that you have done little to end. I can say I care about this country first and last and.."Cuban has voiced his support recently for the Black Lives Matter movement and made it clear that he will have no issue if Mavericks players choose to protest by kneeling during the national anthem.
"If they were taking a knee and they were being respectful, I'd be proud of them. Hopefully I'd join them," Cuban said during a June 18 appearance on ESPN's Outside the Lines.
NBA rules state that players and coaches must stand for the national anthem, but Cuban said he hopes the league can adapt and "allow players to do what's in their heart."
"Whether it's holding their arm up in the air, whether it's taking a knee, whatever it is, I don't think this is an issue of respect or disrespect to the flag or to the anthem or to our country," Cuban said. "I think this is more a reflection of our players' commitment to this country and the fact that it's so important to them that they're willing to say what's in their heart and do what they think is right.
"I'll defer to [commissioner] Adam [Silver] on any final judgments and [players' union executive director] Michele Roberts. But the reality is my hope is we'll let the players do exactly what they think is the right thing to do."
In 2017, Cuban voiced a different opinion after Trump criticized NFL players who kneeled during the anthem to protest social injustice and police brutality.
"This is America, and I'm proud of people who speak out civilly. That's who we are as a country," Cuban said at the time. "I'll be standing there with my hand over my heart. I think the players will be [standing]. I expect them to be."
Three years later, as the Black Lives Matter movement continues to grow following the death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis, Cuban explained what has changed his mindset.
"Because I think we've learned a lot since 2017," he told OTL. "I think we've evolved as a country. And this is really a unique point in time where we can grow as a society, we can grow as a country and become far more inclusive and become far more aware of the challenges that minority communities go through.
"So I'll stand in unison with our players, whatever they choose to do. But again, when our players in the NBA do what's in their heart, when they do what they feel represents who they are and look to move this country forward when it comes to race relationships, I think that's a beautiful thing, and I'll be proud of them."

Facebook Overrides Fact-Checks When Climate Science Is 'Opinion' (arstechnica.com)
Facebook says its fact-checking process is one of the ways it plans to fight disinformation heading into the U.S. presidential election, but as Ars Technica points out, opinion content is largely exempt from review. "New reports about the way the site handles the fact-checking of climate science stories [...] make clear that fact-checking can only work as well as Facebook allows it to," reports Ars. "While Facebook has heavily invested in efforts to stem the overwhelming tide of false and misleading COVID-19 information, for example, it does not heavily fact-check information related to climate change." From the report:Rarely reviewed, however, is different from never. "When someone posts content based on false facts -- even if it's an op-ed or editorial -- it is still eligible for fact-checking," Facebook communications director Andy Stone told the NYT. "We're working to make this clearer in our guidelines so our fact checkers can use their judgment to determine whether it is an attempt to mask false information under the guise of opinion." The line has been clear as mud, so far, and Facebook has at least twice overturned the rulings of climate scientists who determine content to be partly or fully false. The first time, a group that partners with Facebook as one of its fact-checkers -- Climate Feedback -- marked a 2019 Washington Examiner op-ed as false. A climate-change denial organization, the CO2 Coalition, complained to Facebook about the fact-check, and the content warning was then removed.
More recently, an article about climate change published by The Daily Wire, a right-leaning site that generates very high traffic on Facebook, also earned a "partly false" rating from Climate Feedback. The author of the Daily Wire article publicly complained about being "censored," and Facebook staff reviewed the fact-check. Popular Information obtained internal Facebook documents showing that the Facebook staff agreed with the "partly false" rating. An email thread that alerted high-ranking company executives to the kerfuffle showed that the fact-checking and communications teams apparently wanted to leave it alone, but the policy team said its "stakeholders" thought the fact-check was "biased." The notice no longer appears on Facebook shares of the Daily Wire story.A group of senators led by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) last week demanded Facebook explain its inconsistent position on fact-checking.
"Notably, since Facebook issued a blog post on its efforts to combat misinformation on Facebook in April 2017, disinformation campaigns on the platform have continued and expanded, often with state-sponsored support," the senators wrote. "If Facebook is truly 'committed to fighting the spread of false news on Facebook and Instagram,' the company must immediately acknowledge in its fact-checking process that the climate crisis is not a matter of opinion and act to close loopholes that allow climate disinformation to spread on its platform."

Does posting legal jargon protect your Facebook info? Fact Check
Messages on Facebook claim that posting a legal notice on your Facebook timeline will protect the information you upload to the social network, such as your photos and posts.
FALSE
Many versions of the message quote various legal legislation including the Rome Statute and certain provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code.
Such messages have been spreading prolifically since 2012 in various formats, and despite their popularity, are all entirely false. Nothing in these messages is accurate, and posting legal sounding posts to your timeline makes absolutely no difference to how your information can be used in a legal sense, by Facebook or by other users.
First we will outline the popular examples of this persistent hoax, before going into more detail further below.
All your posts can become public tomorrow
Of the more popular variants of the hoax vaguely claimed that your Facebook posts “can become public tomorrow”. Most variants claim that this is happening because Facebook is now a “public entity”. Many also vaguely claimed it was on Channel 13 news, as per the example below.

In 2019, this variant of the hoax also started to spread with another hoax attached to it that claimed a “new Facebook algorithm” limits your newsfeed to 25 friends and copying and pasting a message can bypass that algorithm. That’s also nonsense and we discuss it in a separate article here.
The “attorney advised me to post this”
Another version omits the reference to Channel 13, but claims “an attorney” advised to post the jargon –
Better to be safe than sorry. An attorney advised to post this. Good enough for me. The violation of privacy can be punished by law (UCC 1-308- 1 1 308-103 and the Rome Statute). In an open essay on what it means to be part of SI, Sampaio praised the magazine for creating another issue that champions "a diverse set of multitalented, beautiful women in a creative and dignified way," adding that she is "excited and honored" to take part. While it means a lot to her to model for SI, she is even more inspired by the significance it has for the LGBTQ community as a whole. Sampaio, who hails from a fishing village in northern Brazil, has been using her platform to fight for transgender rights. She explains that the beauty of her home country is contrasted by brutal crimes against the transgender community. In a previous interview with Vogue, she pointed out that in 2019, 129 transgender people were murdered in Brazil.

Venus, Long-Thought Dormant, Shows Signs of Volcanic Activity (nbcnews.com)
Scientists have identified 37 volcanic structures on Venus that appear to be recently active -- and probably still are today -- painting the picture of a geologically dynamic planet and not a dormant world as long thought. NBC News reports:The research focused on ring-like structures called coronae, caused by an upwelling of hot rock from deep within the planet's interior, and provided compelling evidence of widespread recent tectonic and magma activity on Venus's surface, researchers said on Monday. Coronae are essentially fields of lava flows and major faults spanning a large circular area. Many of the 37 reside within in a gigantic ring in the planet's Southern Hemisphere, including a colossal corona called Artemis 1,300 miles (2,100 km) in diameter.
Many scientists long had thought Venus, lacking the plate tectonics that gradually reshape Earth's surface, was essentially dormant geologically for the past half billion years. The researchers determined the type of geological features that could exist only in a recently active corona - a telltale trench surrounding the structure. Then they scoured radar images of Venus from NASA's Magellan spacecraft in the 1990s to find coronae that fit the bill. Of 133 coronae examined, 37 appear to have been active in the past 2 million to 3 million years, a blink of the eye in geological time. The research has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

What Happened When Microsoft Analyzed Its Own Remote Work Patterns? (hbr.org)
Harvard Business Review just published a new analysis by the director of Microsoft's Workplace Analytics team, a director on Microsoft's workplace intelligence team, and the editor of Microsoft Workplace Insights.
"Four months ago we realized that our company, like so many others, was undergoing an immediate and unplanned shift to remote work..."
"So, we launched an experiment to measure how the work patterns across our group were changing, using Workplace Analytics, which measures everyday work in Microsoft 365, and anonymous sentiment surveys..."[O]ur research revealed that workdays were lengthening — people were "on" four more hours a week, on average. Our survey shed light on one possible explanation: Employees said they were carving out pockets of personal time to care for children, grab some fresh air or exercise, and walk the dog. To accommodate these breaks, people were likely signing into work earlier and signing off later...
One data point stunned us: the rise of the 30-minute meeting... We had 22% more meetings of 30 minutes or less and 11% fewer meetings of more than one hour. This was surprising. In recent decades meetings have generally gotten longer, and research shows it has had a negative effect on employee productivity and happiness. Our flip to shorter meetings had come about organically, not from any management mandate. And according to our sentiment survey, the change was appreciated. Suddenly the specter of an hour-long meeting seemed to demand more scrutiny. (Does it really need to be that long? Is this a wise use of everyone's time?) This is one of the many ways that the remote-work period could have a long-term impact...
Our colleagues in China, who have already moved large parts of their workforces back to the office, are seeing that some of the habits that emerged during remote work, such as more reliance on instant messaging and longer workweeks, have continued even after the return.
Other interesting observations:

Other interesting observations:
- "Employees who had well-protected weekends suddenly have blurrier work-life boundaries. The 10% of employees who previously had the least weekend collaboration — less than 10 minutes — saw that amount triple within a month."
- "Responding to the lack of natural touchpoints — grabbing lunch in the cafeteria, popping by someone's desk — employees found new ones. In our group, these ranged from group lunches to happy hours with themes such as 'pajama day' and 'meet my pet.' Overall, social meetings went up 10% in a month."
- "Multitasking during meetings didn't spike even though people weren't in the same room..."

NEW (written 1708.27 and 1907.04) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of your death, Mom. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. Dropped "Talk to you tomorrow, Mom" in the sign off on 1907.04. Should have done it sooner as this feature is no longer daily.
