Directory Penny Lane interviews a silhouetted member of The Satanic Temple in her new documentary, HAIL SATAN? (Magnolia Pictures) |
A Sense of Doubt blog post #2916 - HAIL SATAN! The Satanic Temple and the Fight for First Amendment
I saw this movie back in 2019. It's a great movie.
Still, apparently there's some eyeballs on my content, though a fair number is surely bots.
Anyway, my point being that I tend to think that no one looks at my blog, and so offending people with this post is not much of an issue.
I am ready for the potential heat that this may generate (though I wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing at all).

Hail Satan? A New Documentary Shows Devil Worshipers Are Unlikely Defenders of the First Amendment
Director Penny Lane chronicles the rise of the Satanic Temple, a group that combines theatrical stunts with political activism.
"The Satanic Temple is a new religious organization that was founded in 2013, kind of as a prank, but very quickly gained a huge amount of authentic followers," says Penny Lane, director of Hail Satan?, a documentary premiering at select theaters this week.
Headquartered in Salem, Massachusetts, the Satanic Temple began by organizing theatrical stunts designed to shock people. As its membership grew, political activism became central to the Temple's mission. It challenged Christian monuments on public land and opposed the teaching of religion in public schools, making enemies of politicians, television pundits, and pastors across the country.
So what do followers of the Satanic Temple believe? "You do find a range of political views within this religious organization," Lane says. "But when your religious tenets are about rebellion against authority, checking your beliefs against our best evidence…autonomy, freedom, liberty—yeah, you certainly see a large overlap with a libertarian point of view."
In this interview, Lane talks about what makes the Satanic Temple tick and what its struggles with Christians, politicians, and the mainstream media say about religion in America today.

TST stands alone because we are the only entity that can assert a religious liberty claim that terminating a pregnancy is a central part of a religious ritual that encourages self-empowerment and affirms bodily autonomy.
This means that the imposition of waiting periods and mandatory counseling is akin to demanding a waiting period and counseling before one can be baptized or receive communion. Clearly, that would be a violation of religious liberty.
While the SCOTUS decision is clearly a major set back, the Supreme Court has repeatedly affirmed religious rights. The Satanic Temple is currently suing the state of Texas to protect our civil rights. Our Texas claims are untethered to the due process Clause. They are a direct interpretation of the right of conscience in the Free Exercise Clause. We have requested alternative science-based abortion counseling in Minnesota. We will also be suing the FDA for unrestricted religious access to Mifepristone and Misoprostol.
THE SATANIC TEMPLE MISSION
The mission of The Satanic Temple, a religious organization, is to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense, oppose injustice, and undertake noble pursuits. The Satanic Temple has publicly confronted hate groups, fought for the abolition of corporal punishment in public schools, applied for equal representation when religious installations are placed on public property...
