A Sense of Doubt blog post #2924 - Charlton's SPACE WAR - Comic Book Sunday for 2302.19

A Sense of Doubt blog post #2924 - Charlton's SPACE WAR - Comic Book Sunday for 2302.19

I am always amazed at how the Internet contains so much, so much undiscovered territory -- each day, another country.

Sometimes, I get ideas for COMIC BOOK SUNDAY posts simply by an image that scrolls via the screen saver that I always have running on the second desktop in the home office.

And so it was that I spotted three covers I had downloaded of the Charlton comic Space War that started in 1959 and ran to 1964 as a bi-monthly right through the time when I was born.

One thing that intrigued me about the comics are the advertisements featured on the covers. I am not sure how common such a thing was in the time period, but I know that advertising money was very important to the success of comics, especially after the protracted campaign in the 1950s to discredit and ban the publications, to cause them to self-censor, and to suffer as groups gathered to make bonfires out of the publications.

The industry scrambled to find subject matter that would not be identified as objectionable and might actually sell.

I can imagine that Space War did not sell very well hence its bi-monthly schedule and its original run of only 27 issues.

Also, here's a bunch of the top results for sites that collect information about the comic and the cover art.

Originally, I downloaded art off my typical  go to site of COMICVINE at GAMESPOT but some of the images were total crap with very low resolution.

So I downloaded again from https://comicbookplus.com/?cid=779 because I didn't want "MY COMICSHOP" on each image. Much better.

For some reason, there were two versions of issue #20. I cannot see much of a difference. Very minor.

Browse this cool covers from yesteryear.

This is COMIC BOOK SUNDAY for 2302.19.

Thanks for tuning in.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
