A Sense of Doubt blog post #3039 - Formatting Titles in a Paragraph
The quarter is basically over, but it's always good to get these posted for next quarter. I need to collect them!
So many of my students get this stuff wrong.
I get them flipped: italics where there should be quotes and the reverse.
I get nothing.
I get both together because if one is confused about which to use, why figure it out, use both and then one is right even though both together is wrong.
This is one of my major pet peeves in composition.
HOW TO PUNCTIATE TITLES: QUOTES OR ITALICS?
People always seem confused on how to correctly format titles within their paragraphs. Do you know when to put titles in italics and when to put titles in quotation marks? Don't worry. Most people don't.
NOTE: The following information has no bearing on your APA reference page and is exclusive to the writing in your paragraphs.
Remember this: titles of major works should be italicized, and titles of minor works should be in quotation marks " ".
Major works include the following and should be italicized:
- Book titles (excluding religions books, like the Bible and the Koran)
- Periodical titles (magazines, newspapers, journals)
- CD titles (Does anyone even buy CDs anymore? Maybe the word album would be more appropriate.)
- Movie titles
- TV show titles
- Long poem titles
Minor works are smaller parts of the major works and should be in quotation marks " ":
- Chapter, short poem, excerpt, or short story titles (typically a smaller part of a book)
- Article titles (smaller part of a periodical)
- Song titles (smaller part of a CD)
- Scene title (smaller part of a movie)
- Episode title (smaller part of a TV show)
