A Sense of Doubt blog post #3857 - The Return of The Greatest American Hero!

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3857 - The Return of The Greatest American Hero!

Okay, not the actual TV show.

Stories in comics.

Not as good but not bad either.

As a kid, I liked singing along with most anything, especially TV theme songs. My sister and I would often do this together, and some of our favorites were "Welcome Back Kotter," "WKRP in Cincinnati," and "The Greatest American Hero," even though by the time the latter two aired I was in college.

LOVE the theme song to "The Greatest American Hero!" It is definitely top five favorite theme songs of all time.

I am a sucker for good theme songs with strong lyrics and an uplifting feel. Despite the fan outcry of disdain and loathing for the theme song to Enterprise, I loved it.

Good theme songs set the emotional tone for the show, and the "The Greatest American Hero" song did that and more.

What a great show!!

Robert Culp in the supporting cast?? I mean, come on.

Connie Sellecca!

Great stuff.

Here's your nostalgia blast for the day.

Thanks for tuning in.

Cult Classic '80s Superhero Show With a Perfect 100% RT Score Returning For New Stories

by Sean O'Connell

As popular as superhero stories are today, the genre has a long history of both serious and comedic efforts that have built a legacy, and earned a fan base. Many of you point to Superman and Spider-Man as your entry points, as those movies played to larger crowds in the 1980s and ‘90s. But those of us who were watching our heroes at home have a soft spot for a reluctant hero who never really mastered the game. And now they are coming back.

For three seasons beginning in 1981, William Katt played Ralph Hinkley, a Los Angeles high school teacher who receives a suit from extraterrestrials that grants him powers, turning him into The Greatest American Hero. And now the beloved character will be returning as part of a brand new comic book series launching in 2026.

Believe It Or Not, He’s Back

The Greatest American Hero was a blend of genres, from sci-fi to comic book. But it was also heavily comedic, as William Katt’s Ralph was never very good with his powers, and usually flew around California awkwardly. The running joke was that Ralph lost the instruction manual to the suit, so he usually figured out a new super power by accident.

It was a really fun show, with an unforgettable theme song that almost anyone in my age bracket can sing, still, to this day.

As part of this new announcement, AMP Comics confirmed it has acquired the comic book publishing rights to the beloved cult classic and the company plans to being it back as an all-new comic series premiering in 2026—led by an all-star team that includes the original Hero himself, William Katt, as Executive Producer.

The creative team behind the reboot features Tawnia McKiernan, daughter of the late series creator and TV legend Stephen J.Cannell, alongside Don Handfield, CEO of AMP Comics, who will co-break the story. Handfield will write the initial arc with other writers, including AMP Editor-in-Chief Joshua Malkin, set to step in for subsequent issues.

In a release, Handfield said:

The Greatest American Hero was ahead of its time—quirky, heartfelt, and deeply human. We’re honored to continue its legacy and couldn’t be more excited to have William Katt involved every step of the way. Being a part of this franchise is a boyhood dream come true.

The series is slated for release in 2026, with plans to feature signings and a fan celebration at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where Katt and other cast members will reunite to promote the launch.

“As a child, my favorite show of my dad’s was GAH. Watching Ralph navigate his life, which had been invaded by a supersuit, while dealing with Bill Maxwell’s pushy demeanor, was the highlight of my day,” McKiernan added. “This buddy superhero show was so much fun to watch! And as my dad often said, ‘fun to write.’ I look forward to collaborating with this amazing team and can’t wait to see where the suit takes us next. Here we go: The Greatest American Hero!”

"Believe It or Not"
Song by Joey Scarbury ‧ 1981

Look at what's happened to me
I can't believe it myself
Suddenly I'm up on top of the world
Should've been somebody else
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a pray'r
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me
Just like the light of new day
It hit me from out of the blue
Breakin' me out of the spell I was in
Makin' all of my wishes come true
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a pray'r
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me
This is too good to be true
Look at me
Falling for you
Believe it or not
Believe it or not
Believe it or not
Believe it or not
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a pray'r
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me
Believe it or not, I'm walkin' on air
I never thought I could feel so free
Flyin' away on a wing and a pray'r
Who could it be?
Believe it or not, it's just me

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
