Not sure when I am ending blog vacation. Soon probably, though my regular activity is often sort of low power, especially while I am in school and doing home work.

I have a pretty big assignment due Sunday, so I am keeping to blog vacation for at least another week and maybe two.

Partly because I have not sufficiently worked ahead on the blog with more original content.

Plus I keep seeing posts I would like to reprint, like this one. And then I go into the original post and find a broken image and feel good about reprinting as I am also fixing a problem.

I miss Bitch Media and also Bitch Magazine. I am very sad that there was not enough support for it, and they had to close down, especially since moving here, I fantasized about working with or for them as their offices were down on Alberta in Portland, an area here I spend a lot of time.

Anyway, here's the reprint from FOUR years ago -- wow, it's been four years! -- and a lament for the greatness of BITCH MEDIA.

BLOG VACATION #1 - 2026 - Taking a blog vacation for a couple of weeks, until at least June 26th, 2026. But now that it's past June 26, I am not sure when I am resuming normal operations. Mostly reprints. A few simple shares (not that simple shares are out of the norm) and THAT ONE THING. Need time for other things.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #2684 - Bitch Media (and Magazine) Closes up Shop

I am late to sharing this news, which broke in April.

And I think I am late to sharing it because I was so grief -stricken by the announcement.

Bitch has been a part of my life for 23 years. I adopted it early in its 25-year history when I was asked to teach its main motto and raison d'etre: "a feminist response to popular culture."

Originally, the WMS department at WMU paid for my Bitch subscription. When I left my role as the sole instructor of Media and the Sexes, I paid for my own subscription and the occasional donation, though I was never able to give them as much money as they deserved.

In 2021, I brought founder and sharp-feminist-culture-critic Andi Zeisler to our campus at Lower Columbia College (virtually) for a talk on feminist criticism of popular culture and how we can employ such content in our class rooms.

Sadly, it was not enough.

The great writers and thinkers associated with Bitch Media and Bitch Magazine have had a profound and paradigm shifting affect on me, an affect I have tried to pass on to others, students, readers.

Thank you, Bitch Media.

I am going to miss you, A LOT.

Blog Vacation Two 2022 - Vacation II Post #120

I took a "Blog Vacation" in 2021 from August 31st to October 14th. I did not stop posting daily; I just put the blog in a low power rotation and mostly kept it off social media. Like that vacation, for this second blog vacation now in 2022, I am alternating between reprints, shares with little to no commentary, and THAT ONE THING, which is an image from the folder with a few thoughts scribbled along with it. I am alternating these three modes as long as the vacation lasts (not sure how long), pre-publishing the posts, and not always pushing them to social media.

Bitch Comes to a Close

Bitch Media has been an independent-media presence like no other. Since 1996, we have provided nuanced, thoughtful, and resonant media criticism and have never wavered from our original mission to look at popular culture through a feminist lens—and encourage others to do the same. Over the past 25 years, Bitch’s magazine, website, podcasts, writing fellowships, campus programming, and more have helped to shape a media and pop-culture landscape where feminist perspectives are embraced, rather than sidelined. 

Recent years have brought a multitude of challenges to our organization, and despite incredible effort, we have concluded that we are unable to sustainably continue creating the quality content that our readers and supporters expect. It is with very heavy hearts that we tell you that Bitch Media will cease all operations in June, 2022. Current subscribers and Rage members accounts are in the process of being closed and, if applicable, prorated refunds will be issued. BitchMedia.org will remain active for the foreseeable future to serve as an archive.

We feel incredibly lucky to have turned what was once a stapled-together zine into a media organization that published a talented and diverse slate of new voices and inspired an incredible amount of loyalty from people who became not just readers but stakeholders in our work. And we are proud to leave a quarter-century legacy as a fresh, revitalizing voice in both contemporary feminism and independent publishing. We will miss all those who accompanied us on this journey. Thank you for everything.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts.
