A Sense of Doubt blog post #1270 - God Break Down the Door - A Musical Monday Mix for 1808.13

Portland - Alberta Street - 1808.10
A Sense of Doubt blog post #1270 - God Break Down the Door - A Musical Monday Mix for 1808.13

This mix began with the new Nine Inch Nails album Bad Witch as the core source, which is inspired by David Bowie and his monumental release just before his death: Blackstar.

From the Wiki page:

On May 17, 2018, the lead single "God Break Down the Door" was released for streaming,[3]and on June 22, 2018, Bad Witch released to generally favorable reviews.

and

Musically, Bad Witch is a concise album that blends the industrial rock aggression[14][15] of Nine Inch Nails with slower and more somber moments, most clearly seen in the two instrumental pieces.[16] Reznor employs a saxophone at multiple points on the album,[16] and he occasionally sings in a way dissimilar to his normal manner,[17] with some critics comparing the style to Bowie's.[7] The album's first two tracks, "Shit Mirror" and "Ahead of Ourselves", are its heaviest and most direct.[16] The third song, "Play the Goddamned Part", is the album's first instrumental.[14] It slowly builds tension, emphasizing saxophone[16] and experimental noises[7] while working toward the album's sole single, "God Break Down the Door".[18][19] "I'm Not from This World" is another instrumental, predominantly ambient song, described as "droning" and "hypnotic".[20] The album's sixth and final track, "Over and Out", begins as a relatively upbeat, catchy electronic song but ends as a protracted wash of white noise that concludes Bad Witch.[20][21]
Several critics have compared Bad Witch to Reznor and Ross' film scores.[7][22] Others likened the album to Bowie's Blackstar (2016),[7][21][22] and some to Reznor's soundtrack for the 1996 video game Quake.[22]

However, because of my recent mix about Wax Trax -- Industrial Accident -- named for the documentary about the seminal Chicago store and label, I wanted more of the sounds I found there, like Cabaret Voltaire, the Residents, Negativland, Throbbing Gristle, and Killing Joke among others.

also from WIKI:

Cabaret Voltaire are an English music group formed in Sheffield in 1973 and initially composed of Stephen MallinderRichard H. Kirk, and Chris Watson.[1] The group was named after the Cabaret Voltaire, a nightclub in ZürichSwitzerland, that served as a centre for the early Dada movement.
The early work of Cabaret Voltaire consisted primarily of Dada-influenced performance art and experimentation with tape machines, helping to pioneer industrial musicin the mid-1970s. Finding an audience during the post-punk era, they integrated their experimentalist sensibilities with dancenew wave, and pop styles.[2][3] They are often characterized as among the most innovative and influential electronic groups of their era.[3]

I was instantly drawn to the name Cabaret Voltaire before I knew its reference. It was the band who made the first album I bought at Wax Trax, and the band has continued to be a source of inspiration ever since, though "Sluggin' For Jesus" will always be my favorite track, possibly just because it's the first one I ever heard.

AND....from WIKI regarding Throbbing Gristle.

The band is widely viewed as having created the industrial music genre, along with contemporaries Cabaret Voltaire.[28][page needed] The term was coined in the mid-1970s with the founding of Industrial Records by Genesis P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle and Monte Cazazza; on Throbbing Gristle's debut album The Second Annual Report, they coined the slogan "industrial music for industrial people."[29] The first wave of this music appeared with Throbbing Gristle from London, and Cabaret Voltaire from Sheffield.[30]

This mix has become a bit of a whopper: 26 tracks with an extra video/audio of the entire new NIN album Bad Witch.

Though I tried to theme the mix and its music, there's some picks that just came from You Tube's algorithm, such as Jamie XX's "Gosh" and The Prodigy's "The Day is my Enemy," which is funny as the kids just watched Mad Max: Fury Road in my house Saturday night.

"I am a human being, God Dammit! My life has value!"

I wanted something powerful and political for this mix, and David Brin supplied it and shared the Howard Beale rant from the movie Network.

"I am mad as Hell and I am not going to take this anymore."

I don't want that Trump lunatic anywhere near government power let alone in the presidency, but apparently Pence is worse. Read the following. END TIMES?

Click this one too for more: POLITICS OF RELIGION.

"dominionism," the doctrine that the faithful have a right to all the goods and property and wealth of unbelievers, who will all die horribly soon anyway, in apocalypse, followed by eternal torment.

That's what Pence has in store for us if he has all the power.

We have three months. Can we win the Senate and Congress and minimize the stranglehold these dangerous lunatics have on our country?

GOD, BREAK DOWN THE DOOR!!

FROM -

http://davidbrin.blogspot.com/2018/08/pray-for-his-health-i-mean-it-and.html

One of the greatest of all films - "Network" - was prophetic in so many ways. So why is the "Howard Beale Scenario" scaring me to death, right now, praying for the health of a president I detest?

First, Network gave Baby Boomers our generational anthem, when a raving Beale urged everyone to scream: "I'm as mad as hell!" And, as spoiled, sanctimony junkies, boy have we boomers shot-up the drug high of rage, bringing the U.S. to the verge of ruin. (Our calmer/nicer/smarter kids will be better off without us!) But there is another lesson from Howard Beale..

...in the way that he meets his end, when his deranged mania no longer serves the purposes of oligarchic masters, who realize he'll be more useful to them as a martyr.

Now ponder last week's by-election in Ohio - a nail-biter in what should be a safely-red district. As Trump's toddler rants get ever-more unhinged, he's solidifying a jibbering-loony confederate base that grows more fanatical as it shrinks, while driving away a growing trickle of residually sane "ostrich" conservatives.

Yes, the GOP has perfected (with foreign help) dozens of cheats and some we'll only discover in November. Still, a big enough Blue Wave could result in a Congress that actually represents sanity, issuing real subpoenas and holding real hearings... and that could be death to the Putin/Murdoch/oligarchy's putsch. (State assemblies are more important! Find a candidate in a swing district to help.)

If a living Donald Trump is a Beale-like hemorrhage/liability to oligarchs like Murdoch-Mercer-Putin, envision instead a martyr, idolized by millions who are enraged at the sight of liberals stupidly celebrating in the streets. A rage only just barely restrained by the sainted one's newly-annointed successor, a smooth-voiced President Mike Pence, whose soft words lure back those wavering ostriches just in time to stave off republican extinction.

Elsewhere I've urged "don't impeach!" because a President Pence will smoothly and efficiently-relentlessly seek to implement the prophesied end-times that he openly avows to praying-for. (There are things much worse than a toddler-narcissist, fools! Are you listening, Mr. Colbert?)

Anyway, impeachment isn't the only way to deliver us into the hands of dominionist fanatics.

No, no. God bless the United States Secret Service! Along with 99% of the rest of the so-called "Deep State," hundreds of thousands of dedicated men and women professionals in the fact-using community, who do their jobs with skill, every day. Keep ol' Two Scoops alive! Even as you navigate a minefield, working to obey your oaths to keep us all alive.

As for the rest of you, wise up! Stop playing checkers while Vlad and Rupert are cheating at chess. You have three months, but that means starting now, finding some way to help. You are made of no lesser stuff than the heroes of Antietam, Gettysburg and Normandy. So stand up and prove it.

And here's a long, tall drink to the continued health of the President (alack) of the United States.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1107 - Gratitude and Gull Lake - Hey Mom and T-shirts Reprint

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1107 -
 - Gratitude and Gull Lake - Hey Mom and T-shirts Reprint

Hi Mom, So, in case either of my two readers did not get the message, I am still producing HEY MOM posts twice a week with the Throwback Thursday posts and the weekly reprints on Sunday.

I freely admit that it may be "weak sauce" to reprint posts a second time on the same blog, and at some point, I have to be diligent to not reprint for a third time.

Sure, I am aware that reprints are an easy post, but I have over 1100 such posts, and I am proud of many of them. I have a lot from which to choose.

This post combines two reprints as I drew from the T-shirts blog for the gratitude content, which has appeared on my blog numerous times.

The concept came from a movie called The Secret.

I have returned home to the west early from my trip, but I am grateful. I am grateful for my trip, I am grateful for my family and friends in Michigan, but I am also grateful for my new home, Mom. I wish you were here to see it.

BTW, I love this picture of us (both below and up top).

And so I tribute toe family, to gratitude, and to my former home (a post from the T-shirts blog that was also made in August), where I grew up, my heart and soul.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #217 - Gratitude

Hi Mom, Here's some content from my T-shirts blog. I am still trying to catch up since I have fallen behind on my daily regimen.

I am very grateful for you, Mom, and for our family (see next two photos).

I think about our times together very often, Mom. These memories fill me with warmth and love and an ache that is never going to subside.

At least, I know that I told you how grateful I am for you. I know that I did not leave anything unsaid or finish our time together on hurtful or hateful words.

I am grateful to have lived with you for so long, to be able to be raised by you, and then in turn, to be able to help take care of you. I am grateful that you saw me get married and got to know my wife and kids and pets (Vespers and Satchel).

I am grateful for all you have given me because it's so much and I find new layers of it all the time.

FROM T-SHIRT #78

So, I am very grateful for Suzanne Vega and all that she has given me in my life, all that I have shared with her through music, what seems like deeply personal music, without knowing her at all, though feeling like I do know her, know her music.

So, each morning, I run the list of things for which I am grateful. I am not always listing musical artists, like Suzanne Vega, because I focus mostly on my family and community. Though from time to time, musical artists will drift into my consciousness, and I will thank the universe for them, infuse the positive energy of my love into the fabric of the cosmos, because, after all, we are all connected.

LAST WORD ON THE GRATITUDE THING: I got the idea for the gratitude prayer (meditation, list, incantation, catalogue, rumination, reflection, or whatever you want to call it) from a movie called The SecretI am not quite promoting the movie as a "true" exposure of an actual science. In fact, many of the stories in the film are a bit fatuous. However, I like watching it. I showed it to a class (my second viewing) about a month ago, and the idea of the daily gratitude thing struck me. In the movie, one of the interviewees (I forget which one and it's not important) explained how he had a rock in his pocket. At night, he would set it on his dresser with the other contents of his pockets. The next morning, he would retrieve it and remember to list the things for which he was grateful as a daily routine, like a prayer. He had a visitor from South Africa and told the man about his rock and gratitude practice. The man called it a "gratitude rock." After returning to South Africa, he wrote his American friend and asked for some gratitude rocks to be sent to him because one of his children was very sick, and he did not have the money to seek medical care for the child. The interviewee balked at sending "gratitude rocks" because, after all, "they are just rocks," he said. But he found three nice rocks and sent them to his South African friend. Months later, the South African wrote back. The rocks worked! His son was healed and recovered. They paid for his medical treatment by selling a hundred gratitude rocks. People believed in the power of the gratitude rocks.

I found this story inspirational. I do not use a rock, but every day, I make my gratitude list. I send energy into the universe. I focus on the positive and try to limit or dismiss the negative.

I think it's working.

Thank you, Mom.

T-shirt #157: Gull Lake

I needed a quick post today or I am never going to catch up let alone get ahead.

Home.

I grew up in Gull Lake, Michigan. I had the pleasure to return and live there with my wife for the first two years of our marriage in the house I helped build with my family on West Gull Lake Drive. I shared a bit about this house in T-shirt #94 and our BAT POLE.

For me, Gull Lake is home.

Living in the beautiful place on West Gull Lake Drive from 1979-1981 and then from 1985-2003, and then to return there in 2009 and live there until 2011 with my wife and kids makes me a very happy and a very lucky person.

The West Gull Lake Drive house is a beautiful architectural model. My kids called it the "Vampire Tree-House." I am not sure about the vampires, but it is very much a tree-house.

I count myself so lucky to be able to live there with two families: my parents and my sister, and then my wife and step-kids.

Just looking at the pictures make me nostalgic and wistful.

It is a magical place and a home filled with memories both good and a few that are tragic.

I am grateful.

Thank you to all my readers.

But, I am warning you now, I am going to cheat again and re-publish content here that I originally published as part of T-shirt #78: Suzanne Vega.

You do realize that I cross-reference my blog posts like this because, while I have your attention, I want to try to catch your interest in postings you may not have read. For a few of you, this is not an issue as you have told me that you have read the whole thing. This is a feat I find very impressive, and I am honored. Thanking you for making me part of your daily or weekly life (not sure how often some of you who read it all read it).

Anyway, this chunk of text seemed worthy of a repeat. So here we go.

"Home is where I want to be
Pick me up and turn me round
I feel numb - born with a weak heart
(So I) guess I must be having fun
The less we say about it the better
Make it up as we go along
Feet on the ground
Head in the sky
It's ok I know nothing's wrong . . nothing....
Home - is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place "

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1268 - Court of the Crimson King - Not a Musical Monday

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1268 -  Court of the Crimson King - Not a Musical Monday

It's time for some more music on the blog. So I resurrected a half-finished post from deep in the vault with some music. It's not often that I do music on a day that's not Monday.

In the Court of the Crimson King - Wikipedia - from KING CRIMSON

King Crimson is one of my all time favorite bands.

When I did my top ten most listened to albums ever in my T-shirts Blog - Entry #97 - Kraftwerk, King Crimson's Discipline was in that list.

In the Court of the Crimson King was the band's debut album in 1969. The band would iterate many times after the first, and it released Discipline in 1981. I was hooked.

I limited myself to five "Frippery" and King Crimsonry here.

This feeds my soul.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1267 - Why Mishael Morgan left the Young and the Restless

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1267 - Why Mishael Morgan left the Young and the Restless

Okay, I know that posts like this one will modify your opinion of me for some of you, but I don't really care. I am unashamed about being a fan of the Young and the Restless soap on CBS.

After all, I have been "watching" this soap since it came on the air in 1973 with my Mom. In fact, I played the soap daily in her room when she was in her twelve day coma in 2000.

This show has been part of my life longer than it has not been given that I was 11 years old when it started. I play it while I work, which is why I put quotes around "watching." I have not sat and watched the show and done nothing but watch the show since my Mom passed away, and even then I was often eating lunch or working. Mom and I had many Y&R marathons in the years since the meningitis.

The show is an intimate and integral part of my life. I like its rhythms, flavors, and repetitions. So I was somewhat surprised when the producers killed off the character of Hilary Curtis played by the gorgeous Mishael Morgan, who has her own INSTAGRAM (and yes, I follow).

So, they did write her off the Canvas by having her die from injuries sustained in a car accident in a car driven by Lilly Ashby. I wonder if Lilly, who ran a red light that caused the truck to hit their car. Will Lilly be charged with manslaughter?

I am still watching.

Here's a share of a CBS Soaps article on Mishael Morgan's departure.

Mishael Morgan Says an Emotional Goodbye to THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS

Rumors have been flying around the daytime community for a while, but now it has been confirmed. Mishael Morgan is leaving THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS where she has played the role of Hilary Curtis for five years. “It is with a heavy heart that I announce my departure from Y&R,” she posted to Instagram. “There were many factors that led to this decision, but ultimately, five years just felt right to me.
“I feel blessed to have worked with some of the most talented, hardworking, and fun-loving people in television. Thank you to the cast, the crew, and everyone at Sony and CBS who made the past five years truly unforgettable. A special thanks to my partner in crime, Bryton James (Devon), who always brought out the best in me and Hil. Last, but definitely not least, I want to thank all of my amazing fans who have supported me on this journey. Your gifts, love, and kindness over the years (and days) have warmed my heart and fueled my soul more than you could ever know.
“Although my adventure as HIlary Curtis is coming to an end,” Morgan concluded, “my work on screen is far from over. This may be a goodbye from Hilary, but I’ll just say ‘see you soon.’”
Sadly, it looks as though "Hevon" will not get their happily ever after. (Photo Credit: Howard Wise/jpistudios.com)
Hilary has been through plenty of ups and downs over the past five years, but right now, it looks as though all her dreams are finally coming true. She’s rekindling her relationship with Devon, she’s pregnant with his baby, and everything is looking good. At this time, Y&R has not mentioned anything about a recast, which has many fans fearing Hilary will be killed off. While there are also rumors circulating about just how Y&R is planning to write Hilary off the canvas, nothing has been confirmed yet, so you’ll just have to stay tuned to see when and how she exits.
Naturally, we’ll keep you up to date on Morgan’s future projects so you can continue to enjoy seeing her on screen. And for more Y&R casting news, keep reading the CBS edition of Soaps In Depth magazine!

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1106 - 2018 - My sister's birthday  - Throwback Thursday for 1808.09

Hi Mom,

Lori's birthday today, but I am not at liberty to divulge the number because I checked, and she does not have the age posted on her Facebook page. But I can share that I am in Michigan to celebrate, and since I am finishing this entry tomorrow, I can already report that we had a great meal at Salt of the Earth in Fennville, which is probably the one area restaurant that Liesel and I did not make it to before we moved out west.

It was a GREAT dinner, right up there on par with any dinner I have had out west and just about one of the best I have ever experienced in west Michigan, though I do qualify as "one of the best."

Pictures exist, and I will add them when I get them from the source.

This one's mostly a reprint of last year's post devoted my sister, Lori Marie's, birthday.

Events like this make me miss you even more, Mom. You would have loved that restaurant and that dinner.

I am back out west now; I flew home this morning, Friday, which is tomorrow from this blog's perspective.

I have essentially been awake since 1:30 a.m. my time and it's 8:40 p.m. Pacific right now.

I am tired.

Enjoy this tribute to my sister, and Happy Birthday Lori.

updated 1808.11 - Here's the dinner photos.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #764 - My Sister Lori's Birthday - 2017

Hi Mom,

Today is Lori's birthday. You know, my sister? I am sure you remember... :-)

If I had more time, I would write more about Lori's birthdays over the years and what Lori means to me.

I love my sister very much.

Good choice in having her, Mom!

Lori and I are very close and have regular lunches, which will not be something we can continue with me moving out west.

Fun fact: Lori was born at 10:19 p.m. ( I think that's right... I may be a few minutes off). At that precise time, on most of her childhood birthday, she would scream out the door at the top of her lungs how old she was at the precise moment of her birth. We actually would do a count down sometimes.

Happy birthday, Lori. I am going to miss seeing you more regularly, so you have to come visit.

The pic above is from Lori's second birthday. Lori is in the high chair. The girl to my left is the neighbor girl, Sue McCrumb.

Here's some pics of Lori...

NOTE on time: When I post late, I had been posting at 7:10 a.m. because Google is on Pacific Time, and so this is really 10:10 EDT. However, it still shows up on the blog in Pacific time. So, I am going to start posting at 10:10 a.m. Pacific time, intending this to be 10:10 Eastern time. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. But I am not going back and changing all the 7:10 a.m. times. But I will run this note for a while. Mom, you know that I am posting at 10:10 a.m. often because this is the time of your death.

NEW (written 1708.27) NOTE on time: I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of your death, Mom, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of your death, Mom. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom.

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1265 - Confront the shadow; see the LIGHT

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #1265 - Confront the shadow; see the LIGHT

I fell behind on the blog, so I am reaching back in time to planned and drafted posts from a year ago for a quickie.

Last year, right about this time, cleaning my office in preparation for the move, I found this note.

I have no idea who MLW is. In January of 1996, I was dating Molly, but those are not her initials, and she was not inclined to read Jung.

I am not sure what V&V was meant to reference either.

But I was intrigued enough by the whole thing to take a photo and present it here in the blog.

Also, it seems significant as I have saved the note for many years (21 years).

Where did it come from?

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
