A Sense of Doubt blog post #2302 - What's Going On? Marvin Gaye - Musical Monday for 2106.07

What's going on?

Still as relevant today as 50 years ago.

One of the classic albums of all time by the late great MARVIN GAYE back in 1971 one of the biggest hits for the MOTOWN label from my dear DETROIT MOTOR ROCK AND SOUL CITY.

WHAT'S GOING ON? by Marvin Gaye is considered by many to be one of the greatest albums in modern music.

Rolling Stone ranked it NUMBER ONE in its 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, unseating Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles for the top spot in the revised 2020 list version.

Here's that 2020 list:

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-lists/best-albums-of-all-time-1062063/marvin-gaye-whats-going-on-4-1063232/

The top five in the new 2020 list are now [2] Pet Sounds - the Beach Boys, [3] Blue by Joni Mitchell [4] Songs in the Key of Life - Stevie Wonder, and [5] Abbey Road by the Beatles.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band dropped to 24th.

The previous list:

Let's SAVE THE CHILDREN.

That's all I want to say. Just experience the music. Some live versions of the eponymous song, an updated 2019 video that is somewhat prophetic given the events of 2020, and the full album.

Word.

“We shot ‘What’s Going On' in Detroit and Flint Michigan, we wanted a place that resonates with the song and the history of Motown, while also remaining relevant to the sociopolitical issues in the music video.

The music video took four days to shoot, but I travelled to Michigan a couple weeks early to find the right people. It was very important for us to find real people that resonated with the stories, rather than casting actors. We wanted the history of the song and the communities we filmed in to come through in our video. For example, Steve Smith, who plays the blind man in our music video, actually worked for Motown when ‘What’s Going On’ was originally recorded. The church we filmed in was one of the first establishments to set up a water station for the Flint community - they would hand out clean water and raise awareness on the ongoing crisis within the community.

In addition to Steve Smith, we had the opportunity to feature other influential community figures in our music video, including Karen Weaver, the mayor of Flint, and pivotal activists that have been involved in the Flint Water Crisis for many years. One such activist in our music video is named Ariana Hawk, who, along with her young son, was featured on the cover of Time Magazine during the height of the water crisis. She ended up moving from Flint, only to return in order to continue the fight for her community. To this day, the Flint Water Crisis has yet to be resolved, and Ariana continues to be a strong activist in the movement.

"The point is that this is a historic song for an important moment in history, and what’s beautiful is that it’s message is timeless and universal. It’s about human emotions, human relationships, and a coming together. My hope is that our music video will remind people to continue asking the question Marvin Gaye asked in 1971.” - Director: Savanah Leaf

Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
(Live At Montreux1980)

Live At Montreux

This is a fantastic live DVD from Marvin Gaye recorded at the Montreux Casino on July 7 1980, as part of that year's 14th Montreux Jazz Festival.

Marvin Gaye is an American legend. He was signed to the fledgling Motown label in 1961 by label founder Berry Gordy and later that year he married Gordy's sister. He scored a total of 39 US Top 40 singles for the label including such classics as "Let's Get It On", "Ain't That Peculiar", "Inner City Blues", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "What's Going On" and of course "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", all of which are included on this DVD. Marvin Gaye died in 1984, shot by his father following an argument, and was inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987.

With a running time of around 100 minutes, this DVD captures Marvin Gaye at the very height of his powers and combines outstanding music with a scintillating live performance.

Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
