A Sense of Doubt blog post #2825 - Counter Argument and Logical Fallacies video via the SIMPSONS (and more)

I created this series for my English 101 classes called THE INVESTIGATORS OF THE TRUTH series split in three episodes: counter arguments, fake news and misinformation, and logical fallacies (and a bit more counter arguments).

The logical fallacies stuff is great using The Simpsons, Futurama, and The Family Guy to show examples of logical fallacies, like slippery slope, straw man, and ad hominem.

Genius!

Here's the videos but also a great sample followed my assignment.

Thanks for tuning in.

Enjoy!

5 Tips To Spot Bad Science About COVID-19 Notes:

     Tip 1: “Know your source.”

     What is the author arguing?

What does the scientific consensus have to say about the topic?

Is it an epidemiologist? Or is it just someone who got their facts from an article they read online?

     Tip 2: “Click the links.”

Suppose someone gives information about their topic and links to where they got the information from. Then go to the site and see it for yourself. Is that site credible?

Looking for the citations will help you figure out whether what you’re reading represents the evidence.

Tip 3: “Don’t be taken in by headlines or graphics.”

Headlines and graphics are good ways to draw people in and even persuade people to read and believe the information.

Tip 4: “Don’t be intimidated by jargon.”

Don’t let information that sounds or looks reasonable change the way you think; make sure it is true!

Just because someone has a graph or chart doesn't always make them correct.

Tip 5: “Don’t fall for the Gish Gallop.”

Don’t let an influx of information make your decision-making skewed.

People who are trained and know what they are talking about are far more reliable than people who find random information online and just use that to make their case.

Simpsons Logical Fallacies: Ad Hominem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RnMmXTVOjBY&list=PLcyVkNeXvb4hn57t2SYDj0HKdI3sz6qwN&index=1&t=6s

I feel like this could be used in my essay about a living wage in a way. People make different amounts of money, we all know that, and an argument people can make against raising the minimum wage to a living wage is that people make more than a living wage, so they don’t care; which is selfish and it shows the difference between those who people who are more wealthy and those who are poor.

Family Guy Logical Fallacies: Equivocation:

This can correlate to my essay about a living wage well, as people often confuse a living wage and minimum wage and try to relate the two terms as if they are equal.

Simpsons Logical Fallacies: Begging the Question:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wk0unUvDK0A&list=PLcyVkNeXvb4hn57t2SYDj0HKdI3sz6qwN&index=16

You can probably say this about every topic. The topic of minimum wage, however is such a huge deal that you need evidence to back you up so that people can see the problems and can’t turn away from them.

Simpsons Logical Fallacies: Slippery Slope:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wylfMowmNhc&list=PLcyVkNeXvb4hn57t2SYDj0HKdI3sz6qwN&index=17

The Slippery Slope is probably the biggest problem with the argument for raising the minimum wage to a living wage. If you raise the amount of money people make, industries will be losing out on a lot of money, or if we raise the minimum wage, we have to raise the prices of fuel and groceries. This solves nothing and is something I go over in my essay.

PART ONE - Thinking Critically with Rebecca Watson

Watch the video and read the transcript at this link:

A Sense of Doubt blog post #1873 - How to Spot Bad Science about COVID-19: Rebecca Watson

Write at least two paragraphs reflecting on what you learned about credibility and thinking critically about sources, about identifying bias, and how you might apply these lessons as you evaluate your own sources and consider what information that you plan to include in your essays that you have to CORROBORATE THIS QUARTER as well as in the future in classes and just in your own life quest to find accurate and reliable information.

For example, say I find a source that tells me that only 5% of gun crimes in the last five years in the nation were committed by people with permits to carry concealed weapons where that practice is legal. This is fact that should be corroborated by more than one source and even two sources could still be the result of bias and fake news. I might want to corroborate that fact from more than two sources and see if there are contrasting facts that negate the fact I have. This process is similar to what Watson does in her video and the basis of her arguments.

PART TWO - LOGICAL FALLACIES AND THE SIMPSONS

Watch all these videos in this playlist and write about at least four that either you realize you have in your essay and explain with text from your essay or ones you feel you need to be watchful for as you could see making this kind of logical fallacy in writing. Use your essay as an example of the latter as well.

Watch additional videos or Google search logical fallacies if you feel you need more clarity.

No length parameter for this part. Use your judgement for how best to deliver the content on four logical fallacies and examples from your own work.

Chris Tower will provide SOME instruction on logical fallacies in class.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
