A Sense of Doubt blog post #3794 - Eliza Dushku Earns Clinical Mental Health Counseling Degree

A Sense of Doubt blog post #3794 - Eliza Dushku Earns Clinical Mental Health Counseling Degree

I have been a fan of Eliza Dushku since her role of Faith in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

This news item caught my eye as she just graduated with a Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Just like me.

I am not done yet with my degree, but I was pleased to see our similar degree plan. Sure, it's not that we are the only two people in the universe earning such degrees. And would I react the same way if I learned that some one who had not worked in Hollywood has earned such a degree? Well, I would feel that connection but probably wouldn't make a post about it.

But when I went to her Instagram and saw that she had allied with Paul Stamets, who lives in Washington, just north of me, and was the focus of one of my favorite films Fantastic Fungi.

Seemed post worthy.

Congratulations to Ms. Dushku!

Thanks for tuning in.

Buffy star Eliza Dushku enters new career in mental health counseling 8 years after last role: 'True calling'

Long after she won hearts by saving the day as a vampire slayer, Eliza Dushku is helping to save the world in a whole new way.

The Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum is gearing up for a new career in mental health counseling after receiving her master's degree from Lesley University in Cambridge, Mass., earlier this month. Dushku, 44, recently took to Instagram to celebrate her accomplishment, sharing a video of herself walking across the stage to collect her diploma.

"Graduating with my master's degree (!!) feels like more than an achievement — it feels like a deep calling realized. True growth, energy, and passion — manifested," Dushku wrote in the caption of the post, which also featured photos of her in sporting a cap and gown alongside her husband, Peter Palandjian, their two sons, and her classmates. "After nearly a decade of inner work and building a new life, I'm so grateful for this moment in time."

She shouted out her "highest self — for taking this wild leap away from everything I knew and making it happen," as well as her boys "for the little sacrifices made & love you gave, each day to honor and support this dream."

The Bring It On star went on to express gratitude for the support she received from her community while continuing her education, writing, "And to my family, friends — new and old — my colleagues/classmates, professors/teachers, and community, I give thanks: for rooting me on, encouraging me day in and day out, and affording me the grace, strength, and space to step fully into these past years of clinical training."

She concluded the heartfelt post: "Today, I stand grounded and ready to support others on their journeys of becoming — through self-discovery, healing, and transformation. The connectedness I feel in holding safe, compassionate space for those who seek the undertaking is such lifeblood now. To possibility. hope, and healing, all."

Dushku stepped away from acting in 2017 to begin working toward her career in mental health counseling — her "true calling," according to a press release issued Thursday. She has become certified in psychedelic assisted therapy.

In a 2024 interview with Boston Magazine, she opened up about her desire to retire from acting in favor of her new career, revealing that at the time, she and her husband were funding research and clinical trials into the potential uses of psychedelics.

"I had the means to shift directions and choose a course in my life that focused on healing myself so that I could help heal others," Dushku said. "I would be remiss if I didn't now share the transformation and the peace and the passion that I have. This is just absolutely so clearly my real calling, my real purpose."

Dusku left behind a memorable career of acting roles, including playing the slayer Faith on Buffy and spinoff series Angel and leading Fox's Tru Calling and Dollhouse.

In 2018, Dushku wrote a 2,300-word account for the Boston Globe slamming her former Bull costar Michael Weatherly, writer-producer Glenn Gordon Caron, and CBS after news broke that she was paid $9.5 million by the network after alleging that she was sexually harassed by Weatherly during her time on the procedural. (Weatherly did not admit to sexual harassment but apologized for his behavior toward Dushku in a statement to the New York Times, characterizing it as unfunny and inappropriate attempts at humor. He also denied pushing to have her written off the show.)

CBS canceled Bull in 2022, after six seasons.

In Dushku's interview with Boston Magazine, she recalled feeling "feeling so wholly unwell" from her past traumas — including her alleged molestation by a film's stunt coordinator when she was 12 years old — while using psychedelics, which ultimately helped her process the past.

"I wouldn't have been able to do all of that without this psychedelic-assisted therapy and healing that showed me that I was safe in my body and in my life, naming and telling the truth about things," Dushku said. "And it's all kind of catapulted from there."

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I post Hey Mom blog entries on special occasions. I post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day, and now I have a second count for Days since my Dad died on August 28, 2024. I am now in the same time zone as Google! So, when I post at 10:10 a.m. PDT to coincide with the time of Mom's death, I am now actually posting late, so it's really 1:10 p.m. EDT. But I will continue to use the time stamp of 10:10 a.m. to remember the time of her death and sometimes 13:40 EDT for the time of Dad's death. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
