Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #163 - EXAM HELL

Hi Mom, I am studying all day for my PreCalculus final, which I chose to take tomorrow, Friday, to have more time to study (and because I had to work Monday).

Help me, Spock!

Spock!

Help me, Spock!

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.

Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #162 - Best raincoat ever; best wife ever

Me and Liesel, Skeabost Bridge, Isle of Skye

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #162 - Best raincoat ever; best wife ever

Hi Mom,

As you know, I mired deeply in exams, studying for exams, giving exams, final grades, and the like.

Mostly now, it's a long and rough trail from here to Pre-Calculus Friday morning.

So, today, and tomorrow, I will let pictures do the talking.

This picture was taken during our trip, Liesel's and mine, to Scotland in May 2015 (May 21st to be exact... at 3-ish in the afternoon, Scotland time). In the background, you can sort of see the Skeabost Bridge on the Isle of Skye, near Portree and the intersection of A850 and a road that Google maps will not identify.

Skeabost Bridge traverses the Rover Tora, and this lovely site, pelted with rain on that day in May, is out front of Keepers Cottage accomodations, a lodge for travelers.

We were on our way to the distillery in Talisker.

Best raincoat ever.

Arguably, this is my favorite picture of me and Liesel from 2015 (so it will be on our Christmas Card) and one of my favorite pictures ever.

The raincoat is a promise.

Like the others, we will weather this storm, too.

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.

Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #161 - Introversion - Reprinted T-shirt nonesuchery pt.3

Satchel - Christmas 2012
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #161 - Introversion - Reprinted T-shirt nonesuchery pt.3

Hi Mom, Java Final exam today. Giving an LS 1040 final. Lots of studying.

I indicated there would be more t-shirt reprints. I am selecting good stuff that did not make my top ten (which has like 12 not 10 entries) favorite category in 365 T-Shirts.

I promise more new content when I get beyond the finals Hell week. I added to the third part of the dreams series with last night's dreams, and I have some other entries half started.

Until then, it's been a while since we had a puppy on this page, so here you go (see above) and enjoy the blast from the past and some cool stuff on introversion.

T-shirt #178 - KUDL2009PLAY - Introversion

I am still in Detroit. Troy, actually. Liesel and I did a lot of driving around Detroit suburbs yesterday. Friday night in Ferndale for dinner. Yesterday, we had lunch in Royal Oak and drove to the Sign of the Beefcarver to get our pictures (see far below). Then after I finished a set of grades, we were off to the Meadowbrook festival site, taking Rochester Road up to stop at an Old Navy enroute. Rochester is cute. Easy in and out at the Laneway Festival.

We ended up getting there just in time to see Sigur Rós.

I was hoping that Pavilion seating would be first come/first served, and it was. We showed up at the end of Solange's set and snagged two seats, which would have been perfect if the stupid, bumpkin, uncouth, insensitive, privileged, "I am the center of the universe and I don't give a fuck about you" Detroit "fans" of Sigur Rós did not stand in front of their lovely and comfy seats for the entire show. I tried to release the anger and rage out my pores and not dwell on it. But, really, if I had wanted to stand through the whole concert, I would have moved up front to the standing area!!

Next time, I am not going to be passive, and I will ask these dickheads to sit down. Do I sound bitter? I am mostly over it, but I am still a little bitter. I want to love everyone and suspend judgment, but some people make this so difficult. I want to be a loving, accepting, and easy-going person, free of judgment, and treating others as I want to be treated (BE NICE), and yet I want to sit through my Sigur Rós concert and SEE THE FUCKING STAGE; AND so I have a long way to go to forgive people for being so insensitive because they think they are the center of the universe. Or perhaps they just don't think at all.

Oh yeah. Remember T-shirt #168, and the PLAY & NO PLAY tags on two identical shirts both hanging in my closet? This is the second "PLAY" one and seemed a good way to get into other subjects.

INTROVERTS - INTROVERSION

This is a good place to share a few thoughts on Introversion and introverts.

I shared the video that Liesel had introduced me to in T-shirt #161. You can either dial back and watch the video or search You Tube for Susan Cain: The Power of Introverts, if you want to watch it and have not yet done so. It will take about 20 minutes of your time.

Susan Cain's video is very thought-provoking. As I explained in T-shirt #161, I am more introvert than extravert. ("Extravert is Jung's spelling, and he created the words.) And yet, I am often mistaken for an extravert. I often play the role of the extravert because our society and culture glorifies and enables extraversion while it denigrates, admonishes, and fails to understand introversion. In our culture, there is something wrong with people who want to be alone, who like to read and have quiet time, who need solitude to work on one project at a time, who do not always feel like collaborating or being a team player, who do not spend all their time out and about being social.

Why are introverts so misunderstood? Why are introverts pressured to change their ways? Why are introverts seen as damaged, sad, or in some other way deficient?

Susan Cain makes several astute observations in her video about the importance of introverts and the contributions they have made to the arts, to science, to world cultures.

According to Jung, we all fall on a spectrum. Each of us is some part introvert and some part extravert. We are yin and yang, light and dark. And yet many people want to homogenize. They want pasteurization. Difference is what is interesting. Conformity is not.

Enjoy the wonderful comic reprinted below (and linked) that makes this point more effectively than my rhetoric.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #160 - Buying Christmas Presents

Mom and her beautiful smile on Christmas Day
December 25, 2011
Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #160 - Buying Christmas Presents

Hi Mom,

I am missing you especially a lot today as I have been buying Christmas presents for the kids, my wife, and Dad. This is something that you LOVED to do with me, and now that this is the first Christmas that I am doing it without you, I think about your absence with every purchase and with every decision.

Christmas lists were a thing with you. Dad was far less insistent on getting the list far ahead of time. You always wanted it before Thanksgiving if you could get it then. With the modern world such as it is and two day shipping, the lead time is not so necessary. I avoid stores like the plague, and I am sad, in some ways, to admit that I do most of my shopping online. In fact, for Liesel, simply to make it as easy as possible for her, I gave her one wish list on Amazon. She can click a few buttons and be done.

I miss your attention to detail. I am sure I will write about this subject several times over the holidays, but I miss how you shopped for just the right things for our stockings, our stationary boxes, and for each gift, which was lovingly sought, found, purchased, hidden (often for months), and then carefully wrapped and placed under the tree.

I cannot match you standards, especially since these weeks leading up to holiday are the busiest for me. As a teacher, I have mounds and mounds of grading to do, and as a student, I have finals to study for and huge projects to complete, as I did yesterday with my dread Java project (which was actually quite fun). I have not even started putting our Christmas card together, let alone having it printed, stuffing envelopes, and sticking on stamps.

I am not done Christmas shopping, so this process of missing you will go on, and since so many other triggers exist in the holidays, I know it will go on for some time.

I do understand that my experience is not unique. I know of many friends who have lost their parents, their spouses, loved ones, and they feel the same loss, they have the same pain, they have the same absence in their lives. I know. We go on, and we adjust; we all do. It's not easy, and it's a bit surreal.

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.

Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #159 - I AM GEEKY

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother 159 - I AM GEEKY

Hi Mom,

Double pictures up top today.

I told you that sometimes there would be T-shirt reprints, Mom. Here's some of that with some good stuff on TESLA that may not have been seen by as many people last time around.

Enjoy.

T-shirt #180: Sand Castle Competition 1990

So, I was walking home from teaching my classes at WMU yesterday, half-paying attention to my audio book, and thinking about my blog, when a thought struck me so hard and fast that I felt it was warranted to take out my phone and email myself a reminder while I was walking. This may not have been the safest thing to do. But I kept my eyes peeled for hazards, and nothing came of it, though I did actually walk under a ladder that a Charter service person had left propped to a utility pole, unoccupied.

This description is all just to set the scene. Flavor. Savory.

What was I thinking about? Narcissism.

I created a whole category for narcissism, but so far, I have only addressed this subject in any depth once in T-shirt #77, which may have the distinction of being the single most often referenced blog post on my blog. Referenced by me, that is. I am not going to count, but it seems to me that I have referenced this one more than any others. And this makes sense, as T-shirt #77 was a pivotal blog post. I turned a corner at that blog post. I also used it to bury my confession that I had cancer and was going to have my prostate out, which some people actually read. Thank you!

The subject of T-shirt #77 is integral to the blog. Originally, I dismissed the idea of doing the blog as overly narcissistic and self-indulgent. Who would care about the meaning behind my t-shirts? Even more strange, would anyone care to read so much about comic books, 1960s and 1970s nostalgia, the episodic narrative, my top 100 albums, and other subjects I care to explore (and exploit).

A great deal of my thinking and development for the blog culminated in T-shirt #77. I realized that I needed to provide more content to readers than just some thoughts on why I like my t-shirt for that day. I wanted to make my blog a conversation starter, a place to learn things, or to be reminded of things worth thinking about that you already know. I wanted to try to escape the inherent narcissism of the occupation and provide relevant, thought-provoking, and frequently entertaining content for regular readers, occasional readers, and those who just Stumble Upon the blog.

In T-shirt #77, I questioned how quick we are in our culture to brand someone as ADD or ADHD and now how quick we are to cast stones for NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder). These ideas are similar to my criticism back in the late 1980s of the self help book The Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them. Though misogyny is very real and though abuse (both physical and emotional) is also very real, I felt that The Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them could be applied unscrupulously and too easily. In an effort to help women realize that they may be in an abusive relationship with a misogynist, the author defined many different types of women haters, especially those who are very good at hiding their hatred of women, so much so that many of these men may not even be aware that they are misogynists. I thought the book was a bit reckless as the author defined so many types and described behavior in such a way that the book may be able to convince every woman that she may be involved with a misogynist. Nowhere in the book did the author engage in a disclaimer that some men are not misogynists nor did she ever caution readers to be careful in leaping to conclusions based on her descriptions. I remember giving my essay on the subject to a woman I wanted to date at the time, and she ripped me a new asshole, wrongly accusing me of trying to skirt a real and dangerous issue and unfairly criticize a book that could help women escape abusive relationships. I did not understand her ire, and I felt that she misunderstood my main argument. Needless to say, we did not have a romantic relationship. But just as our culture breeds attention deficit behaviors and narcissistic behaviors in people, it also breeds behaviors that may be abusive or seem misogynistic; however, just as not everyone suffers from Attention-Deficit Disorder or Narcissistic Personality Disorder not all men are misogynists. We need to be careful about how we apply labels.

So, these are the thoughts I had on my walk home about narcissism and where ruminating on narcissism took my brain. I think my blog is narcissistic. But I do not feel that I have Narcissistic Personality Disorder. It's true that what I am doing is inherently arrogant, just as producing any art is arrogant in its assumption that other people--that anyone--will care about what I think, what I feel, and what I care about. I accept these assumptions. Okay, there's inherent arrogance and narcissism here. Neither is a good reason to abandon the project nor never attempt it in the first place.

I am grateful for your readership whether you are regular, occasional, or stumbled in. If inspired, share these thoughts in a conversation with someone. Let me know how it goes.

Today's shirt was given to me by my father. His company (TPTA = Tower, Pinkster, Titus Architects and Engineers) competed in an annual sand castle designing and building competition. They felt it was a fun thing for architects to do, being architects and all. I believe my father and my sister always participated, but I do not recall that I ever did. Still, the whole family received shirts. I have written about my family before, and I will again, so I will leave off on that subject for now to instead close with something geeky and about science which I want to share, which is that inherent narcissism and arrogance again, but I think it's worth it.

Stumbled Upon this great comic strip via Stumble Upon .

This comic comes from THE OATMEAL: it's about TESLA. That's the Stumble Upon link.

Enjoy.

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #158 - I am, I am Superman!!

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #158 - I am, I am Superman!!

Hi Mom,

Various stuff today and quickly as I am once again writing from the future.

I have been singing this R.E.M. song off and on lately, basically every time I have a success with a coding problem. I have had many road blocks lately that I had to solve by ingenuity, investigation, and persistence.

So here's a video of the song with actual Supermans from film and TV.

A few other quick facts of recent happenings.

Attended two Christmas parties this week, despite having more work to do than I can possibly do. On Tuesday, Liesel and I attended the neighborhood -- as in the Saint Antoine -- Christmas party hosted by the Armstrongs. On Thursday, we attended the Greenleaf Trust Christmas party with my dad. You would have liked the food at both, Mom.

Since I am writing from one day in the future (Sunday), I can tell you Mom that Liesel and I just went to breakfast. I wish you were still here as I so rarely had breakfast with you in the last few years.

I miss breakfasts with you. We never had enough breakfast.

Anyway, I solved many JAVA code problems.

I AM, I AM SUPERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and I know what's happening...

I am Superman! REM Music Video

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #157 - Java Hell

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #157 - Java Hell

Hi Mom,

I am slamming hard through a huge Java code project due tonight, Friday, at midnight, but since I am writing this from the future, I can say that I managed to get the TA to give me extra time, and so I did not have to stay up until the wee hours, which I would not have been able to do successfully. Here, to the left, is an image from my Net Beans developer program, and farther below, there's a screen capture with Java code in it.

It's a somewhat difficult project, even though the logic of most parts are not as difficult in and of themselves as the encryption/decryption program we did earlier this semester. This is my eighth Java program of the semester. I like writing code. I especially like running into problems and then solving them.

This code reads Baseball team data from a file and then sorts the data into standings order for leagues and divisions all using classes and objects. I ran into a problem the other day in which, for the league objects, I was not getting any output. I had to drill deeply to figure out the problem. I had instantiated the team object in the wrong order. (And, yes, that's a real computer word: to instantiate an instance of the object using the class that creates the object.) Since I out the league and the division data in the wrong order, when I was trying to sort by league using the words American and National, the code was checking the Division attribute that would never be either American or National. I spent a LONG TIME finding this error, which may be the main reason I needed extra time. So that's fixed but now I am struggling to sort into standings order.

ALSO, I have quite lost track of what pictures of you, Mom, I have posted and which ones I have not. I do not have an easy system to look at uploaded photos... oh wait, they are all in Google drive. Okay, so yes, I have used this photo up top already. But it's such a nice photo of you and the Big Guy. I feel the pride and love from the both of you very strongly from that photo. I need that feeling today.

Back to work.

Have someone give you a kiss, and tell you that I love you.

Talk to you tomorrow, Mom.
