Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #717 - Ideas Can Change the World - AEON MAGAZINE

Hey, Mom! Talking to My Mother #717 - Ideas Can Change the World - AEON MAGAZINE

Hi Mom,

I love ideas.

I love to immerse myself in ideas.

I am sad that I will no longer be teaching the college reading course at WMU because I always preached to the students that I was "immersing you in the world of ideas."

The world of ideas is a powerful thing; it's powerful place in which to center one's self.

And so, Aeon magazine's fund raising drive caught my eye when it used the phrase "Ideas can change the world" in its donation drive mailer.

Then, the next bit came through via Warren Ellis in his Orbital Operations newsletter from 1706.18.

Check that link. :-)

So this bit...

I took a picture of the bit rather than copying and pasting it. It's written by Warren Ellis, so the first person is the author, Mr. Warren Ellis, the writer, a Brit, living in the Thames Delta, not the musician who works with Nick Cave.

Ideas are revolution.

Notice what I did there.

Some would say that "ideas are revolutionary."

But how about IDEAS ARE REVOLUTION.

Especially today, when a "meme" has taken on a whole new meaning with the Internet, and the idea of "viral" spread of an idea has taken on a multitude of meanings in our modern digital age of apps and social media and Internet 9.99 or whatever it is.

Then, with that idea in mind (the one that ideas are revolution), look at Warren's comments again. These comments fit well to describe how ideas are revolution. As an instance of revolution, an idea is a disruption that continues to disrupt as it evolves and revolves and grows in force. And the process comes full circle when the force of disruption itself is then disrupted. What was revolution becomes the establishment and is then subject to more revolution.

Aeon is a force for revolution.

It's a force for ideas and how they change the world. This is its first and number one mission.

So, I donated money to Aeon because not only do I subscribe to its newsletter, but I have re-posted some of the articles from Aeon here on my blog, which, strictly speaking is not kosher. Given that my blog has such a small readership, such as just you, Mom, and maybe a few others, and I do not have any revenue-making machinery attached to this site, then I doubt that Aeon would really complain about my sharing of the work since I give ample, clear, and obvious credit to both Aeon and the author of whatever piece it is that I want to share. But, probably, if keeping with the best definition of the law, I should not share. So I gave money to assuage my guilt somewhat despite my cumbersome justifications (rationalizations?) about re-use.

I love Aeon's mission.

I love Aeon's content.

Here's some statements of its mission -- ideas can change the world -- and one of its recent newsletters, which shows its content.

Read on.

Immerse yourself in the world of ideas.

Revolution can happen.

NOTE on time: When I post late, I had been posting at 7:10 a.m. because Google is on Pacific Time, and so this is really 10:10 EDT. However, it still shows up on the blog in Pacific time. So, I am going to start posting at 10:10 a.m. Pacific time, intending this to be 10:10 Eastern time. I know this only matters to me, and to you, Mom. But I am not going back and changing all the 7:10 a.m. times. But I will run this note for a while. Mom, you know that I am posting at 10:10 a.m. often because this is the time of your death.
