A Sense of Doubt blog post #2246 - SAY THEIR NAMES - STOP KILLING BLACK PEOPLE

SAY THEIR NAMES

Daunte Wright

Black Lives Matter – #Say Their Name

In memoriam of the unarmed Black individuals who have been killed by police in the last decade. This list is not comprehensive. There is no comprehensive government data on the topic of police brutality leading to the death of American citizens. There is no real accountability.

An independently compiled database found that more than 1,000 people died as a result of police harm in 2019. The researchers included deaths known to be caused by police—due to being shot, beaten, restrained, intentionally hit by a police vehicle, pepper sprayed, tasered, or otherwise by officers on or off-duty.

People from across the country have died in police shootings (does not include other forms of police violence listed above); 26% were Black people, 18% Hispanic and Latinx people, and 4% from other racial groups. Black Americans account for less than 13% of the population, but they are shot and killed by the police at a rate that’s over twice as high as for White Americans.

In fact, people of color were more likely to be the victims of police harm in 2019 than they were in 2014. In 2019, 54% of those who died as a result of this harm and whose race was identified were people of color – including Asian, Black, Latinx, Native American and Pacific Islander individuals – compared to 50% in 2014.

Despite the increased attention, only about 1% of police officers involved with these deaths are charged with a crime and even less are convicted, according to Mapping Police Violence.

White supremacy has no place in the criminal justice system or anywhere else. Black lives matter every second, every minute, every hour, every day.

When we say their name, may we connect to their humanity.

Each name here is a reminder to not forget that structural racism permeates our culture and thus, our justice system. This is a time for learning about the impact of racism on black and brown bodies in our country, and how we can create change toward an equitable and inclusive society.

Collaborating remotely under conditions brought on by the pandemic, this was a project that could not wait. The GLIDE Ensemble's new rendition of "Say Their Names" is a response to the older, continuing, lethal epidemic of violence against Black people and people of color, a cry for justice, a cry of love and solidarity because Black Lives Matter.

- New note - On 1807.06, I ceased daily transmission of my Hey Mom feature after three years of daily conversations. I plan to continue Hey Mom posts at least twice per week but will continue to post the days since ("Days Ago") count on my blog each day. The blog entry numbering in the title has changed to reflect total Sense of Doubt posts since I began the blog on 0705.04, which include Hey Mom posts, Daily Bowie posts, and Sense of Doubt posts. Hey Mom posts will still be numbered sequentially. New Hey Mom posts will use the same format as all the other Hey Mom posts; all other posts will feature this format seen here.
