Derek Chauvin Found Guilty of Murdering George Floyd |
Jury convicts on all charges. |
By Scott Shackford |
Today is an emotional day for all of us. Not only do we finally have a verdict in a trial that felt like it lasted an eternity, but today’s events are bringing back a flood of memories for us as a coalition.
George Floyd’s murder, along with those of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and too many others, brought us together nearly a year ago. We came together and channeled our anger in the moment into a sustained movement aimed at empowering our community. We demanded change, we took on the forces of voter suppression, and we helped our people vote in record numbers.
But we knew then that our work was always about more than a vote. It was about taking on the systems that oppress our people. So it is with the trial of Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd. It’s about much more than a verdict.
Because while the system provided for accountability in this instance, true justice remains elusive. We still live in a system that kills us indiscriminately. We still live in a system that tries to silence our voices. We still live in a system that responds to our record turnout with the biggest wave of voter suppression bills since the Jim Crow era.
Today we are relieved, but we are not finished. We know that our fight is about so much more than a single verdict in a single trial. Just this past week we saw how much work there is left to do with the murders of Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo. We know that we’re fighting so that we can one day live in an America where we no longer have to anxiously await verdicts that should never be in doubt.
We’re fighting for an America where George Floyd is still alive.
An America where we can grow old and die peacefully.
An America where we can live free -- as is our birthright.
So while we look forward to continuing the fight for justice with you, today we hope everyone can take a moment to pause, reflect, and decompress. This work is heavy and we can’t thank you enough for all that you have done to date.
The More Than A Vote Team
